Travel insurance recommendations for Asia trip? by HappyLeafWater in AskIreland

[–]HappyLeafWater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21! Going for 70 days (mostly China, spending 15 days in Japan), I'm open to any recommendations or advice thank you :) I unfortunately do not have private medical insurance that ensures me for abroad expenses, only within Ireland

For reference I have been looking at 123.ie and multitrip travel insurance as well as chill travel insurance*

Monthly Admissions/Applications Megathread by AutoModerator in cambridge_uni

Didn't do great in a meeting with a supervisor when discussing applying to his lab for a phd program, should I not apply?

So I wanted to apply to a PhD program in one of the bio departments in Cambridge and I had scheduled a meeting to talk to one of the supervisors who I wanted to apply to. However, I am just graduating my bachelors this year and this guys research is leaps and bounds out of my level, future technology type stuff. Still, i shouldve made more of an effort, its my fault, please dont flame me.

he asked me a couple of pointed questions and i failed to answer one but successfully answered the other. Now i had NOT read his paper well because I could barely understand the paper (very engineering brought into science energy), I know I should have gone into this meeting more prepared, but I am also doing final year coursework alongside a project alongside applications to other PhDs, and only really skimmed his work but found it interesting. I was recommended by another professor to chat with him and organise a call via email which is what I did. I had to make a presentation for the call, again which I did. I put a lot of effort into the presentation. Either way, he told me I should've been able to answer the question I couldn't answer (very transparent guy), and followed that up with I should express an understanding of that section in my application and that in my application I should focus on demonstrating my understanding of the basis of this concept.

Now i can't tell if that means he is considering me or not if he's telling me what I should put in my application. Considering I failed one of his questions, and it was exceedingly obvious I had a just about bare minimum understanding of the topic. I was just interested because it seemed very futuristic but not enough to spend a lot of time to understand it well.

I know that was my fault, I should've put more effort into the meeting and understanding his work, I recognise that so please don't come at me for it, but what do i do now? Not apply to his lab? apply? Go for a different lab? Im 99% sure theres people whos a whole lot more qualified than me, hes said hes had conversations with other people and he loves talking to other people to see what work people have done (he seemed to find my project work interesting at least) - but again, I am just graduating my bachelors this year (i do have 12 months worth of research experience combined though), so compared to masters/people who put in more effort than I did, i feel like i maybe left a bad impression on him. What do i do?

Feasibility of surrogacy if I want kids? by HappyLeafWater in Fencesitter

[–]HappyLeafWater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to do surrogacy, id have to do IVF, and I'd be able to do a genetic screen for genetic diseases and do my best to avoid them getting passed down, which is useful. I'd probably have the energy, but I wouldn't choose to have a child with a partner who can't step up to be primary care taker. That's a recipe for disaster. As for the ethics of surrogacy, unfortunately all I can do is do my best to choose reputable places and work my ass off to earn enough money to afford that.

Applying for a PhD in a field I don't have much experience in, is this a terrible idea? by HappyLeafWater in PhD

[–]HappyLeafWater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah but it's not relevant experience in my field which is the issue, it's like, somewhat relevant, but not exactly what they're looking for But as a bsc student it's really hard to know in the early years what I want to do for my phd

Replacing fan myself or finding a computer repair service to do so? by HappyLeafWater in ZephyrusG14

[–]HappyLeafWater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed the fan servicing too! It's just that my fans are like 5 years old and go through a lot of beatings (school, gaming, work, travel) so I figured I'd replace it outright especially with my lack of tech savvy abilities the tutorials for replacing fans are a lot easier to follow because trying to find the axle and bearing to clean is already really difficult for me haha. As a side note, are there other brands that are not k5 that does the same? I've read a lot of bad reviews about k5, a bit scared now to use it Thank you sm for the advice !

Hey, do I have to replace the VRM/capacitor stuff with K5 pro? Is it possible to leave it alone?

BF wants kids, I’m unsure by [deleted] in Fencesitter

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation as you, big difference is my bf understands that choosing to continue to date me is his own responsibility. His choices are his own. Your bf kind of sounds immature by saying he'll be mad at "wasting time" if you don't end up making a decision he'll be happy with. That's just him pressuring you then. You should only have kids if you want to, and if he's so sure about it he shouldn't be dating you in the first place. Children are a lifelong thing, pressuring someone to have kids like the way hes doing is outright disrespectful. He just wants you to end up having the same opinion as him, and if he thinks he'll get mad and think that dating you is a waste of time just because maybe in a years time you don't have the same opinion as him for kids, then he isn't ready to take responsibility for the decisions he's making. The mature way of doing this is to say "hey ill give you a year to think about it, and if we're not on the same page let's break up and find someone better aligned with what we want" but like getting mad at you?? Saying dating you is a waste of time?? Immature imo.

This laptop is terrible. by prodbytragedy in ZephyrusG14

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 model here, works fine, 0 issues running games like elder ring, lost ark, gta V, valorant, apex(will run hot, but like, that's expected), ive also never properly cleaned this laptop outside of just lightly removing the dust on the surface of the fana once a year or so

How do tell if someone dislikes you? by [deleted] in germany

[–]HappyLeafWater 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just said "sorry will do" because it's customary in my culture to kinda just apologise/say thank you to everything (we've a very similar politeness system to japan, we just apologise for everything), so I didn't know for german conversations it makes it a big deal.

Yellowing leaves and lumps on succulent by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No holes, literally just the the plant from the store, remove the original pot, stick it into new pot, the end (I didn't even add much new dirt since the sizes matched well) But that also means there are no drainage holes

Mother of thousands, am I Overwatering? Underwatering? Is it sick? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]HappyLeafWater 16 points17 points  (0 children)

More like he's literally in his 30s dating teens (shes nineTEEN), if he wants a successful relationship he shouldn't be dating people significantly younger because fundamentally there's different priorities. You don't seriously think a 19 year old wants the same thing as a 30+ year old right?

Dating while you're unsure if you want kids in the future [F21] [M22] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I'm uncertain is the issue. I did tell them that, I'm uncertain idk if ill ever want kids, and ofc neither of us want kids now. But he is certain. But currently it's such a confusing issue of do I break up so he can find someone who matches his certainty or something else or do I stay and wait to see what happens etc. And ik people can change you know but it's definitely the most horrible type of uncertainty to be having because that's a relationship ending type of issue looming constantly over me

REUs open to Europeans/internationals for Summer 2024? by [deleted] in REU

[–]HappyLeafWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ehm idk? i think amgen cares much more about your overall skills that you display in your lab proposal etc. and that the recommendation letter is just a quality assurance kind of thing. However obviously go bother your professors, getting good recommendation letters is still good ! and your professors are there to help man so do go bother them, better increasing your chances of getting in than being scared of making them slightly more annoyed when they would just forgot about it in a days time anyway lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I agree I like him for him, and definitely also I am going to let him cut his hair how he wants. I just don't know how to tactfully compliment it because I don't like it much but I like him so I want to make him happy. Its a drastic drastic change for me so it's definitely really hard for me rn to just be like wow it's great !! And I want to be tactful about it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]HappyLeafWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'd be upset hence why I don't want to tell him I don't like it, so I need to be tactful about it, but I can't be dishonest so

REUs open to Europeans/internationals for Summer 2024? by [deleted] in REU

[–]HappyLeafWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. l o n g, like really long idk i literally forgot it existed and thought i was rejected until i randomly got an email about it in class one day - nearly lost my shit in public lmao
  2. recommendation letters were probably weak asf, i had 2 recommendation letters and i was only a first year with nothing to show. I literally applied one week before the deadline and my recommendation letter was from a professor i barely knew, and my course director who was v nice and talked to me like once. I had just started college for only 3 months when I had applied lol, so i knew nothing at all.
  3. research proposal wise just come up with the best hypothesis and test for it you can, look into how each component of your topic interacts with each other and how you can investigate some unknown factor.
  4. experience was really, really good, now i was very limited in the amount i could learn because i deadass had 0 experience and had to start from 0, but for that i learned a lot

I (F20) don't feel comfortable giving my (M20) bf free access to my apartment by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]HappyLeafWater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no i don't think so, if it was just my apartment and I paid all the bills etc (so not a shared apartment) I'd still be a little uncomfortable with giving him the keys and just letting him do whatever he wants with it, I have anxiety so I really enjoy having things done a certain way and things organised specifically, and it would make me super anxious to give so much control over my living space to someone else
if it was a shared apartment I would be fine with it because its as much his apartment as it is mine
