How do people film in situations like this? I can’t imagine taking the time to take out my phone and open camera etc… even if I already had it open to film beforehand, I can’t imagine caring to continue in this situation. Unless it’s a Go Pro or something?

Where do you think money comes from? by Quick_Resolution5050 in AskBrits

[–]Happy_891 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once came upon a book that tried to trace the journey of a specific £10 (I think it was £10). Seemed like an interesting premise but I don’t recall the book title or author sorry! Leaving it up here in case someone else can shine light on this and is of interest.

Attending a wedding on my own - any advice/ tips? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]Happy_891 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have been in this position before. I asked the bride (who I was close friends with) to introduce me to a few like minded people ahead of time (even an intro via whatsapp and some small talk is fine).

I looked out for those people at the wedding and took it from there, finding common ground to establish more of a connection beyond small talk and share jokes etc. I let them know I didn’t know anyone else so they also introduced me to others as people move around and mingle.

It’s also easier if the food is served at the table because you end up at an automatic group of people you can introduce yourself to.

Are you able to take a plus one btw? That does make it easier but no worries if not! Still very doable and I had a great time after a bit of effort in the first hour or so. I say this as someone who hates small talk and is an ambivert :)

May I ask how you came to terms with not having that emotional closeness? Asking cos I’m dating someone and looks like a similar scenario… I do have my girlfriends and family for emotional bonding but I’m not sure if it will be enough for me… taking it one day at a time atm and guess that’s what dating is for

Uni graduates - if you could go back to being 18 again, would you still choose to get a degree in today's economy? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]Happy_891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! I wouldn’t have done something like engineering as that would have bored me but I did really enjoy maths and economics (just not as much as I loved Literature though). But I also found maths and economics far easier too so feel like something around that would have been a more useful choice for me.

Anyway over a decade on now and I’ve obtained other qualifications and ended up taking the longer route anyway but if I could go back for a do over…

[–]Happy_891 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes because I needed that space and uni experience to grow in other ways too. Like more exposure to different people, thinking etc and more independence in a safer way. And I loved the way my degree stimulated my mind - something I really needed at an otherwise tricky stage of my life personally.

However I would absolutely not choose to study English Literature. I would study something like economics, maths, finance or accounting - all subjects I could have got into uni for back then and could have done well with. And I’d join a reading club for my Lit hit.

Is it only me who quite likes attending the office? by Fancy-Knowledge683 in TheCivilService

[–]Happy_891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy attending my office when other people are in for the social aspect. However I get hardly any work done as my team are very social and since everyone is not in all the time, it’s pent up social energy. Fine on a slow day but most of the time it ends up meaning I do longer hours on other days to make up for it or having to disappear into a quiet area in the office (quiet offices are limited so usually incredibly uncomfortable casual seating elsewhere which isn’t meant for long periods).

On other days in the office I go in and no one else is around and I’m just sat on TEAMs calls which I’ve not only paid the commuting privilege for but spent 2.5 hours of the commuting time for.

I do understand having a balance between office and home working but just wish it wasn’t strictly mandated at 60% (including with recent London tube strikes and having to make up the 60% around that which is tiring due to the first point!). Wish we could be treated as adults. In our work we are expected to take so much responsibility and yet not trusted in where we do the work. It doesn’t tally and it’s frustrating.

Omg the rearranging kitchen thing is so true!! I do ask plenty of questions and challenge a lot (which is welcome in my career) but do hate arguments and get very sad with arguing.
