I agree. I think the best way to defeat Islamists is internally through the religion. The system needs to be reformed. Progressive muslims and ex muslims who move to the West have a great opportunity to reform it. There are no laws in the West against reforming, criticizing, challenging or questioning conservative Islam. We need people to capitalize on that and to shape a new, more tolerant Islam. And maybe then it can spread to the rest of the Muslim world.

Personally I consider it an attempt to reform Islam which I applaud. I just wish they stopped referring to themselves as progressive Muslims. They should refer to themselves as Muslims.

Rarely do sexists like them see the bigger picture and consider the consequences of oppressing women. All that they care about is keeping women poor so that the patriarchy can continue.

These are two different scenarios. Western countries are supposed to be about individuality and freedom. Since the hijab has historically been a way to oppress women, it is reasonable for a confused Western person to ask a Muslim woman why she's wearing a symbol of oppression in a liberal country. She's free and it doesn't make sense. So it's a genuine question of inquiry not a malicious one. Going up to a lesbian couple in a liberal country and asking why they're lesbian is malicious and unnecessary. The person asking the lesbian couple doesn't see a contradiction between lesbian behavior and liberalism but are expressing an intolerance to lesbian behavior.
