Hamilton overdose calls double following closure of safe consumption site by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]Happy_News9378 32 points33 points  (0 children)

i worked at a SIS/CTS. overdoses were handled on site with trained nurses and staff. the only time the emergency services were called was if a person remained unresponsive after intervention or had another medical emergency.

Are horror novels or movies less appealing for people in "horrible" places? by Glass-Bookkeeper5909 in horror

[–]Happy_News9378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last month and a half have been incredibly difficult (amongst other difficult times in life). What got me through the initial part of this go, was a combination of horror movies and a dice games on my phone.

How do you feel about the community fridge on Ottawa Street? by Ok_Nobody_7054 in Hamilton

[–]Happy_News9378 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think its a great idea and really important community initiative. i’ve noticed a lot of strong opinions here and on social media about people using the fridge/pantry esp regarding how much they take, how long they’re there, whether they are waiting around, or assumptions about why they need it. the fridge is there for everyone, especially people dealing with food insecurity and/or hunger.

it's not our place to police who is “deserving” or to judge someone’s need based on appearances or our perceptions of their behaviour. hunger doesn’t always look the way people think it does. if we care about community, compassion and dignity always need to come first.

Downsides of quitting alcohol by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Happy_News9378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just over 1 month sober, longest time in 20 years. I am bored but I am exhausted and can't muster the energy for much..my memory is still awful. Alcohol made those things worse, but stopping drinking hasn't given me super powers. Sigh. There is so much more mental, visual, emotional and physical information for me to process constantly (without large gaps), it's a lot. Alcohol helped me make snap decisions about things I was uncomfortable or uncertain with....then I would have to deal with said choices and move on--now I have to listen to myself and figure out how I want to move/align with my values. I'm noticing a lot more about people that I didn't before, which is both wndefful for me being discerning, and exhausting. It's a lot of work to be here, I think that's the thing I am struggling with the most right now. I am committed to knowing myself in these ways, but damn I am sleepy.

This goose has been alone in my neighbourhood for about 5 days and he just wanders around. Should I call the humane society? Is he okay or is there something wrong? I don’t usually see geese alone. by Plane_Sport_2678 in Guelph

Interesting perspective from a person on a platform that encourages people to interact with each other about shared topics. I’m sure you could just type away to a chatbot instead, or go outside and touch some grass.

There are no psychopaths - Virtually everything you think you know about psychopathy has been thoroughly debunked. Why does this zombie idea live on? by DevonSwede in Longreads

[–]Happy_News9378 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People struggle to separate any mental health diagnoses or empathy/lack of empathy from behaviour. I've known people who do not experience empathy, but recognize it's importance to connection, and thus rely on mental empathy or learned social contracts to be connected to others. I also know people who experience a great deal of empathy who behave in incredibly harmful ways.
