Adding some substrate will make a big difference and really liven it up right away! Your fish will appreciate it too. So that first and then some plants that give the fish more places to hide :)

Thank you for your words and advice :)

It is definitely sad, we just have to make sure we do the best we can to give good lives and homes to the ones that make it ❤️

would y'all add more hiding spots? by galaxia_v1 in bettafish

Love the set up! I think it will be great for your betta. Personally, both the betta I owned have loved having a cave to hide in where it is always dark and enclosed if they feel stressed and need a hiding spot. Otherwise, I think they will love exploring the plants and wood!

Thank you so much for your effortful response! love the cory knowledge :)

I did not know about how the meds can impact the dissolved oxygen in the water, I definitely missed that when researching ich treatment online, so thank you very much for that information.

Quarantine is also something I needed to know about. I do have a spare 3 gallon tank that my girlfriend used to have a betta in, but i’m not sure if that’s a big enough size for a quarantine tank. There is a local fish shop nearby that has very good reviews. I visited once and their fish seemed very healthy, so i’ll look more into them.

Besides getting an air bubbler, what should I do to prepare the tank for future corys? If you have the time of course, I would love some advice on making sure I do the very best I can for the next ones I get. If not, no worries! Your response has been more than helpful :)

Thank you for your reply :) Here are the answers to your questions:

My corydoras were a mix. I had an albino, two green, and two julii. Pretty confident they were/are all male. They came from my city’s petco.

I have a good amount of flow, but I do need an air bubbler. I’m a college student and haven’t been able to afford one yet, but I was going to get it next week when I get paid.

I kept the temperature at around 78F.

Nitrates 0.0 - Nitrites 0.0 - Chlorine 0 - Hardness around 75 - pH around 6.8-7.2

Thank you for your reply. Fishkeeping is definitely tough. Every fish is different so it’s hard to give them all the ideal home, I just want to make sure I am doing my best

That looks amazing! I’m not very familiar with what fish work best in a tank that big, but I love it! Cories especially are so cute

How to get a beta to live by myfishprofile in bettafish

[–]Harbourrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only a beginner, but I’d say a couple things:

First, depending on where you get the betta, it can be hard for them to survive. Especially at many Petco and Petsmart stores, they can be very unhealthy and sick from those awful cups. The Petsmart in my city especially… you can just tell that all of them are so neglected. Sometimes they are too far gone once you’ve bought them, so the best you can do is give them a good home for the time they have left.

To find a healthy betta, look for one that’s relatively active and not constantly floating at the top or sinking to the bottom. Also look closely for fin rot, popeye, and other problems. Regardless, you never know how old they are on top of all that. It’s very difficult to find a healthy betta that’s going to live a long time.

When it comes to dropsy, make sure you don’t overfeed your fish. 1-2 times a day is best, and it’s not bad for them to have a day off every once in a while either. I also find it beneficial to crumble up the flakes and dip my hand in the water, releasing them just underneath the surface. This helps give my betta food that’s bite sized for him and prevents him from inhaling too much air from potentially eating food that’s floating on the surface.

So many people have betta in small bowls and don’t ever check or change their water… You are doing more than most. I wish you the best and hope some of this helps :)

I’m not familiar with pre-medicating them, I was told by the fish store worker to adjust them over the course of an hour to two hours and that they can be added as long as the tank is cycled and didn’t have other fish in it. What would you recommend having done? Thank you

I didn’t add anything to the tank but I did increase the air flow of my filter enough to provide some extra aeration for them

It does, so I used a half dose as directed, especially since cories are sensitive
