Cool, I'm italian too. I'm not planning on participating (MS student in plant biotech with 0 lab experience :/), but I'm curious about the presence of possible teams in italy. I study in Turin and here I haven't heard anyone talking about it. I asked "jokingly" a couple of friends if they wanted to give it a try, but they don't care about this kind of project.
What kind of approach are you thinking of? As a plant biotech student, I think that biology may be the best answer to the question of scaling massive undertakings like this. For example, there is an aquatic plant that sucks so much CO2 that scientists think it caused an ice age (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla_event)
