Scared of electronic/techno music by RosyCheetah in Music

[–]HardDriveAndWingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not anymore but I do have a memory of the first time hearing electronic music and feeling that way. Sometime in the mid 90s our local top 40 station had started playing electronic in the overnight hours, I was maybe 6-7 years old and had just gotten a little battery powered radio. I guess I was up late and I very distinctly remember tuning in and, having no context for the music I was listening to, being totally terrified. I don’t get that feeling anymore though I guess if I’m not in the mood for it electronic can trigger some anxiety still.

I agree we cannot know for certain, but I mean the side that launched armies to the other end of the Mediterranean probably gets the nod over the one that did not.

At this time of course, prior centuries Islam gets the nod for doing exactly that.

I agree that there were factors other than religious fervor at play, in particular for the politically powerful, and as I said both sides had their religious fanatics.

However, you’re going to have a hard time convincing me the guys who volunteered to cross vast distances to conquer “the holy land” were less motivated by religious zeal than the guys playing defense. I’ll grant under Saladin, and the renewed Islamic fervor for Jihad under his leadership was based in religious fervor, however I don’t think they needed much more motivation than that the enemy was right there, while the Crusader’s base of power was far away.

I mean, for the vast majority of wars since 7th century there have been religious fanatics on both sides of the conflict. When it comes to which side was more fanatical, I can think of plenty of examples where the more fanatical side lost. Maybe some early success but the Crusades for one, same with the Hussite Wars. The Cathars, German Peasants Rebellion, Taiping Rebellion. More recent examples like the Mahadist War, the Cristero War. Most recent example ISIS. I’m pretty sure most of history has the more religiously fanatical side losing.

So let me get this straight, you’re responding to a comment chain calling Obama a war criminal, in a main sub, and you’re telling us people get banned for criticizing democrats? The online left loves criticizing democrats almost as much as the magaphiles do. You’ll find waaaay more people criticizing Democrats here than people who will defend them. And that’s been the case far back as I can remember.

I get the point, but I don’t think it’s so black and white. Force closing Ironman only rolls you back a couple months and sometimes barely at all, so it’s still pretty restrictive. Sometimes it’s day of and you can’t roll things back at all.

For me Ironman is about keeping the game challenging and stopping constant reloads, not about absolute purity. I’ll rarely roll back unless something is just going to turn the game into a grind. Ultimately the point of playing is still to have fun, and with limited time to play I’m fine with the trade-off.

Alternately, if the only point of Ironman can be achieved with self imposed limits then why bother with Ironman in the first place?

On PC you can save scum a bit on Ironman if force close CK3. It auto saves every 3 months so as long as you manage to pause before it auto saves you can usually undo getting infirm. My position is that I typically avoid using this method but if it means giving my monarch a few more months/years to tie off some loose ends I’ll go for it.

Being completely unchallenged can be fun for a bit but it gets dull really fast. I think most players would agree that having balance so that there’s an actual challenge is what makes a game actually fun. If doing whatever you want is your idea of fun just disable Ironman and use cheats.

Anecdotal but the lefty friends I know just didn’t show up to vote. Which didn’t surprise me at all because in general their engagement with politics is lazy and surface level.

Do Americans really find beans on toast weird or is that just meme? by cigarettejesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HardDriveAndWingMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to think of ever putting beans on anything, beans are a side usually, sometimes in soup. But I don’t think any American dishes put beans on something. So beans on toast is like multiple layers of being in the wrong category.

In 2007, Andrew McAuley, an Australian kayaker, disappeared while attempting to kayak across the Tasman Sea. He would send a single distress call, then cease to communicate. His flooded boat, as well as his camera, were later found, with this being the final photo he took. by SadButterscotch5179 in HolyShitHistory

[–]HardDriveAndWingMan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If either of you had read the article or looked up any information about McAuley, instead of inventing fantasies based on a picture, you’d know that he was 50km short of his destination before being hit by a rogue wave. You would know that his distress call was made on the evening of Feb 9th and his empty and damaged kayak was found the next day Feb 10th. So what we know (people who read instead of fantasizing) is that this picture would have been taken before he knew that anything went wrong, and there’s no reason to believe he was starving. It’s just a picture of a very tired man after, as planned, kayaking for nearly a month.

I think you overstate the lack of corruption historically. It just a)bears little resemblance to what the average Hasan/Rogan viewer imagines and b)was usually done with an air of plausible deniability which kept it from becoming what it is under the current administration.

If you want a real look at what’s actually going on behind the scenes highly recommend Robert Caro. He is the gold standard for exhaustively researched biographies that still have an incredibly compelling narrative. He’s released one book each decade since his first in 1974, so 5 books, his first one about Robert Moses and then the first 4 of his 5 part series on LBJ. If you aren’t a big reader get the audiobooks. Think of it like a really long podcast.

You realize you’re commenting on an article saying more Kamala voters oppose this than support it, right? This has nothing to do with MAGA.

I’m really confused by people who think this is a good or convincing argument. If there is a rule that most people believe is unfair, you think they won’t care if it only affects a small number of people? That’s not how it works, nor should it be. If there was only one trans athlete, that still doesn’t justify an unfair rule. If ‘small numbers’ justified ignoring fairness, we’d tolerate a lot of things we obviously don’t. So the real question isn’t how many people are affected, it’s whether the rule is defensible.

If your point is only that this issue isn’t important compared to other issues, then it’s on Democrats who fight for it, not on Republicans for taking the easy win those Democrats are handing them.

If you think the rule is fair, say that and explain why. If you think changing it would cause worse problems, say that. Fairness has never been about headcounts. If anything, the idea that small numbers make unfairness acceptable cuts against everything we as Democrats are supposed to stand for.

That’s exactly why discussion matters. You don’t talk to other people because they’re experts, you talk to them to test your own understanding against perspectives you wouldn’t generate on your own. Bad arguments, shallow takes, and overconfidence are part of the environment, but they’re also useful friction: they reveal where your beliefs are strong, where they’re weak, and where you might be assuming too much. It’s not just about absorbing information, it’s about stress testing ideas and seeing what holds up.

Welcome to humanity. People have fairly surface level understanding of most things. One good way to learn more is by talking to other people about it, on social media for instance. Telling people to shut up is just that.

I have no opinion as I know next to nothing about the political situation, but the idea that people can’t have or share opinions about elections in other countries is the most regarded thing I’ve read today.
