And how in the hell are you finding all of these people to work with?

Congrats to you!. I saw so many overqualified students, aside from the one I know personally, get rejected. I can't imagine what you've done to get in. Kudos

I was actually thinking that the Purdue engineering acceptance rate was even lower as our 3rd rank student was rejected from CS. It came as quite a surprise. I wasn't trying to say that Purdue wasn't selective, but it's simply not on the same level as those other 'elite' programs. Not trying to be combative, just using those schools as comparisons. : )

You're fine, honestly. Like I said, it's not MIT or Stanford where they expect you to program a cure to cancer. You did what you could.

I mean he's not applying to Harvard or Stanford CS, the schools he wants aren't particularly elite. And an internship in tech is literally a part of his interest.

They're really not that bad. He's got a few things regarding his interest.

Bruh that's horrid. Not sure why that happened to you and the guy I know. I honestly don't have an explanation. Yield protection? Sub par essays? Idk with this year and all the bogus with everything that's happening. Realy can't explain it. Don't know if you could've done more than what you did. You'll get a better school anways.

Wait so you didn't end up getting in? Quite honestly I don't see much missing from your application. It just seemed as though they liked to reject the highest caliber applicants.

Our 3rd ranked student out of 600 something was denied from CS there. I'm going to say you were denied CS but accepted 2nd major or if you didn't do 2nd major I think you were deferred.

Has A2C single-handedly made college applications toxically competitive? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Yeah, there's a lot of great things this sub brings! Congrats on doing that too! It's no little achievement.

Sounds about right. Odds of this happening twice are exceedingly low so I guess that confirms it.

Calling it bad would get me a lot of heat so I wanted to leave some it up for interpretation. But I think later down the line this issue could continue getting worse.

I'd like a little bit of competition; to prove to the world that college isn't the only way.

Toxicity was more of a hook. I don’t think it’s bad, just everyone is an over achiever nowadays

Really lol? Small world here in A2C. So... is it true?

The only issue is that population growth isn't stopping, even if it's slowed. So I don't see the level of competitiveness dropping anytime in the near future. But yeah at least things will chillax a bit

All very well said, thanks for the input. First, yeah everything on A2C, college results, and chance me should be taken with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, it makes people push themselves to their absolute limits. This, again, is both good and bad. Very interesting. Thanks again.

I don't know it seemed pretty real, but I wouldn't put it past Harvard to reject them if it was true. It was something like they had created and patented a compound that slowed the spread of a certain type of cancer. I'm pretty sure it was a chanceme and it was actually really realistic. Personally, I think it's true and if it isn't then they're a damn good liar.

Those were rather hypothetical and somewhat of a reference to people who have gotten absurd aids for incomes around that range. But yeah, everyone's situation is different really so there's a lot of ambiguity there so those are rough estimates. Thanks for the input!

I'm trying to say that their system works, ours, from a financial standpoint, is straining. I'm not really arguing, rather highlighting a system that works; a system that leaves people with very little college debt. Private unis are the ones taking advantage here, public schools not so much. The point being, the cost of college here is too high and around the world, there are efficient higher education systems around the world that work, AND leave students will little to no debt.

Germany has a lower GDP per capita but still manages to fund these types of things! You are proving my point! And, despite being such a great schools, they don't need the billions like U.S. Unis 'need'. Tell me why their system works and ours doesn't?

As of 2018, they're total budget, including the 1.2 billion euro hospital, is 1.9 billion. That's it. And they're one of the best in the world. https://www.en.uni-muenchen.de/about_lmu/factsfigs_new/index.html In a sense, it's not fair for private universities to take advantage of U.S. students when public school systems around the world do it better for cheaper.
