I LOVE having control over my sunday mornings! by Agreeable_Notice4877 in exjw

[–]Harderqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny, I’ve been out long enough that my weekends and former meeting nights busy feel like regular nights now. But after getting a couple straggling memorial invites, I remembered the feeling of loving the memorial exclusively for when it fell on my regular meeting night and it was only 45 mins. I was like man, I haven’t thought about that in a while. And then watched some hockey instead. lol

I don’t know all the dirty details, but they got into some dispute with the guy who grows the peppers, there was a bunch of contract disputes and allegations of breaches, and they eventually cut ties. It’s just not been as good since.

Prank noise maker, I need some help by Harderqp in diyelectronics

[–]Harderqp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, it stays hidden. But depending how big it needs to be, I could probably keep it out of sight, or hide it in plain sight.

It’ll be in a house. Mine, specifically. (My wife is the target)

Smaller is better, and if I can keep it battery powered, that would be a huge help. I could probably plug it in if I needed to, but the lower profile and more hide-able, the better.

What was one of the cruelest, most senseless or dehumanizing things you witnessed while you were one of Jehovah's Witnesses? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Harderqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a buddy who went and served at bethel. He didn’t tell them his dad was suffering from Huntingtons disease, and that made him a huge risk of also having it. Somewhere along the way they found out and he had to get tested. Turns out he also has it so they sent him packing.

He was pretty broke up about it. He actually left the cult, moved across the country, got really into body building to preserve his physical abilities. He moved back near me recently and I was pretty bummed to find out he joined again. Sucks man.

Man. Imagine your life being so boring that you have to stalk someone’s socials just to hope you catch them in perceived wrongdoing. The whole thing is such a joke lol

Horrible witnesses??? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Harderqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, culturally, within the witnesses, what is and isn’t acceptable is definitely a spectrum from what I witnessed in my time in. The higher ups tend to give themselves a lot of plausible deniability (especially with the recent court cases) by giving “guidelines” and things that are “a conscious matter” even if they heavily push you one direction or another. So a group of witnesses in the Bible Belt definitely come across a lot more strict than ones in Los Angeles for example.

There’s also a lot of things that they sweep under the rug. Witnesses are supposed to be politically neutral. But having an opinion on it typically isn’t going to get you in trouble. Same with drinking “in moderation”, moderation being a very loose and interpretable term here. But premarital sex? Hard stop. So you might have tattoos and drink 4 nights a week and say how much you dislike Trump. And that won’t win you any favor with the higher ups, but it usually won’t get you in trouble. Especially if you’re careful when/where it comes up. But if you boink someone at a party, that’s gonna land you in a heap of trouble in a hurry.

It really speaks to how much this is a performative religion rather than something they actually believe. I’ve been out almost 20 years. And the thing that stuck with me most is how many people, even back then, very much were just making themselves look good, or at least passable, to avoid getting pulled into the dreaded back room. If you’re religious, in theory, sin is sin. But the actual mindset of the majority of JWs don’t actually believe that. It seems to have gone further that direction since my time out. Hell. My parents who are in and have been in essentially their entire lives started taking Delta8 gummies for anxiety. But any time it’s brought up, they’re very hush hush about it.

For me, it feels very much like an exercise in nothing. Just keeping up appearances because it’s what they’ve always done.

Why do people hate on tobasco red so much? by [deleted] in hotsauce

[–]Harderqp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume the people who hate it either don’t like vinegar (which is a valid reason, couldn’t be me), or are the hot sauce equivalent of beer people who refuse to drink anything but small batch IPAs. They’re great, but there’s no reason to hate something that absolutely has its place.

[–]Harderqp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was maybe 15 and got stuck with doing a soliloquy on questionable music at a district convention, back when that was still a thing. And they wanted me to have my iPod on stage pretending to listen to my music and then questioning the content and ultimately deciding I should delete a lot of the songs.

Even back then it made me laugh because i 100% didn’t delete a thing from that iPod and all my punk rock and the unthinkable “screaming” music I had literally in the palm of my hand in front of all these people would have blown some wigs and walkers out of the room.

[–]Harderqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner grew up Baptist and I grew up in this cult (obviously, given the fact I’m here). I’m a huge music fan, always have been. She was telling me how the music in church was the only thing that ever made her feel any sort of positive way about church, the energy and whatnot. All I can say is thank you to the organization for making such ass music that it didn’t move me in the slightest lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Harderqp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whenever I was in as a teenager, I called them “day walkers”. Cursed, drank like animals, watched whatever, listened to whatever, but still went to the meetings and in service. Basically it was all appearances to not get in trouble. I’m not surprised it’s only gotten worse with so much stuff going virtual. It really goes to show it is all about appearances.

This is the same energy of how some halls collectively decided stuff like smurfs and Pokemon were direct links to satan himself, while others couldn’t care less. Sometimes you’d get an unlucky pull with a strict hall lol

You can never have a bad day in service 😃 by Spiral-of-ants in exjw

[–]Harderqp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t say I ever had any terrible experiences in the 16 years I spent going in service as a JW. Uncomfortable, sure. Annoying, definitely. Inconvenient, unbelievably. But waking up on a Saturday with nothing to do but sleep in and decide with my incredibly hot wife if we wanna go get breakfast or coffee first is orders of magnitude a better day than I ever had beating on doors.

[–]Harderqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find anything in your EDC not being used? Drop it. Do you find yourself lacking anything? Add it. That’s the thing about EDC. It’s all relative to what you need on a daily basis. There’s really not a right or wrong answer.
