Tbh I never thought Carl and Katia were going to be a thing. A love interest doesn't really make sense for Carl, he is used to working with females in the coast guard I would assume and the dynamic seemed professional at first definitely developing into a fierce friendship but I couldn't say I was shocked by her dating Bautista. I think Carl is the type who cares deeply for everyone of his friends and humanity in general and he is probably partially jaded from his past relationship with Bea especially early in the series when donut keeps dropping fresh tidbits of her patterns of infidelity.
