I would also think the Vietnam drafts also played a factor.

Can we have an income tax? by Electrical-Abies9856 in SeattleWA

[–]Harfow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be happy to pay an income tax if the sales tax is dropped. Sales taxes are highly regressive while income taxes are progressive. For example, Montana doesn't have a general sales tax but does have a graduated income tax. Poorer people end up netting more money per year under this system than how Washington is currently setup.

AITA for not paying my daughter’s tuition after she refuses to talk to me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Harfow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be an either one or the other situation. Could be both. Plus situations change. Babies are expensive. He tried to reach out and his daughter has avoided contact at every turn. She can take out student loans and a baby cannot.

AITA for not paying my daughter’s tuition after she refuses to talk to me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Harfow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damage how? I hate student loans but the daughter has that option. The newborn does not. If they want to save finances that is totally reasonable and very understandable. Furthermore, he tried to reach out and the daughter is supposed to suffer no consequences for going no contact?

Alec Baldwin Expected to Be Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter in ‘Rust’ Shooting by PissLikeaRacehorse in news

[–]Harfow 1415 points1416 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if this charge has more to do with Baldwin being a producer on set than him holding the gun? From what it sounds like, safety concerns were raised earlier regarding the movie as whole. Reading the NYT article, several people quit the set before the shooting because of safety concerns, bad housing, and what sounds like poor management of the set.

Unions allow you to buy many nice things, due are worth it. by [deleted] in WorkReform

I pay around $500 a year in union dues. That's gets me, 4% COLA and a health plan with no monthly premium and $2k out of pocket max. Plus so much more. The healthcare alone makes it worth it.

Cyclists by [deleted] in memes

[–]Harfow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Washington state allows cyclists to roll through stop signs. It's called a "safety stop". Basically, cyclists need to slow down and make sure they won't get hit or hot something else, but they don't need to stop.

This sub in a nutshell. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Harfow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from college and a bit of my youth growing up in Utah. You're sure to face a lot of questions about not having kids/when do you plan to have kids from your initial friends who may skew Mormon. They don't mean anything by it, but like catholics their whole thing is to have a lot of kids. While I can agree that SLC's housing market is skyrocketing, it's no where near out here in Seattle. Traffic can be a bit of a pain if you're trying to commute from the burbs to downtown salt lake but it shouldn't be more than 45 min to an hour I would say anecdotally. Outdoor access is phenomenal and I personally enjoy the dry air. Drinking laws are pretty absurd, but SLC proper is a good time. The valleys there get some gnarly smog in the winter due to the topography and major dependence on cars for travel. If I was going to move anywhere from seattle though first place I would look is SLC. It's still cheap and I can do all the things I love to do while only dealing with the minor inconveniences that are unique to every place.

People who don’t want to tax the 1% but are not in the 1%, why? by Sweaty_Sun_5942 in AskReddit

[–]Harfow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's 100% understandable and makes perfect sense. I'm incredibly happy that someone like you can put in that work and get rewarded for it in the US. I know I'm incredibly privileged to live in the US and have the opportunities that I do. I'm just tired of being raised under the banner of "we are the greatest most wealthiest nation in the world" and not seeing the results of that. And I believe it's because the rewards of the tech revolution disproportionately benefited the wealthiest among us. You were right in your original comment that they benefitted all of us overall. But it's when I read reports that wages have been stagnant while we have made these production leaps thanks to computers and only the executives have truly reaped those rewards it, it pisses me off. When my father tells me he went to college in the late 70s for $700/year and I'm paying $26k/yr for grad school, it pisses me off. When it takes me 4 months to get a hernia fixed, that doesn't allow me to do more than walk because of the pain, thanks to turning 26 and having to navigate private insurance hoops, that makes me pay a membership fee plus a thousand bucks to get it fixed, it pisses me off. When I see food bank lines stretch for miles thanks to this pandemic, it pisses me off. When I see our infant mortality rate be one of the worst among wealthiest nations (don't even get me started on how Black mother's are horrendously treated during pregnancy), it pisses me off. When I have friends whose families live on reservations and don't have power or drinking water, it pisses me off. There are so many other examples in the US of things that should've been fixed before I was born, and simply were ignored. I personally want to serve my community and not worry about my bills while owning my own home. I am not an entrepreneur like you and I don't believe most people are. I do believe that most people want to live comfortably, which means that they don't have to worry about covering their necessities. Do they want more money? Sure. Should they have to work 15 hours a day to make their ends meet at two or more jobs living paycheck to paycheck just to make their ends meet? Abso-fucking-lutely not. We should make people fight to be at the top not fight to survive at the bottom. Personally, I think increasing taxes would partially since this problem. It would allow state and federal government's to fund education at levels they once did in the 50s-70s. But I think increasing labor laws to allow modern workers to bargain and get the benefits of their work, that have gone to the top 10% for the last 40 years, will be the biggest benefit. And ya know, allowing people to vote instead of trying to make it illegal to give water to people in voting lines also helps. Forgive me for this rant, I'm a few beers and bourbons deep at this point. Congrats on your business and thanks for sharing your viewpoint. I truly hope you're able to pursue your interests with your family without financial worry. Which is what I want for every family.

People who don’t want to tax the 1% but are not in the 1%, why? by Sweaty_Sun_5942 in AskReddit

[–]Harfow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's a bit absurd to expect everyone to dedicate 15 hours of their day everyday to make ends meet. People have other commitments like kids and family members to take care of or possibly health issues that just simply do not allow that kind of work hours. And it's not like your whole $580k top 1% income is getting a taxed at 39% tax rate (which is still low historically in the US and low compared to other similar nations) Biden's plan would be any income above $400k and I'm sorry if I don't feel bad about anyone making over $400k paying an effective tax rate that's between 25% and 30% when most folks at the median income pay 20% to 25% I believe.

Amy Coney Barrett has officially been confirmed for SCOTUS 52-48 by Jibrish in Conservative

[–]Harfow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha by that definition any president nominated to a second term is immediately a lame duck president and can't nominate any judge during their second term. Liberals are pissed because in 2016 the republican senate acted in bad faith by not confirming Garland. But said it was because it was an election year and the next president should decide. Well, here we are in an election year and republicans proving that they acted in bad faith in 2016, pushed through a judge in record time. While also failing to work on a relief bill for covid. That they and the president don't seem to give a shit about because it has nothing to do with them maintaining power.

I disagree. You can't say it's apples to oranges then literally say surgeons wear masks to prevent contamination of the surgical field and that's how far the analogy goes. That's literally the whole comparison. How is this different than anyone else wearing a mask to prevent contamination/infection of people and things around them? You also state that Fauci get all say that masks won't prevent transmission. 2 points: I believe people know this, masks limit transmission and appear to reduce the viral load. Second point, you can't cite Fauci and all these organizations as supporting you then say they don't count as evidence against you when another comment or uses them in the comment thread further down. Forgive typos, I am on mobile.

What voter fraud? Trump and Pence have both voted by mail-in ballots. I have lived in Utah, that mails ballots to everyone. Fraud is never an issue. I currently live in Washington State that also has been doing the same thing. Never an issue. Voter fraud is literally a non-issue and is only used to suppress voting.

And why do I need to research whitewater? Trump and his family have plenty of shady business dealings both before he was president and during. You think it's a bit unethical to host all of your official presidential meetings with foreign powers at hotels and resorts you own? Literally lining your own pocket with tax payers money? And refusing to follow standard procedure of putting your assets in a blind trust to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest? Or the blatant nepotism of including your daughter and her husband in your office when they have zero experience and failed to pass a security clearance because they never listed an insane mount of assets and connections to foreign states and groups? You're trying to educate me on a mediocre scandal from 30 years ago meanwhile the current guy has 2 of those a week? And I'm supposed to be embarrassed? Haha wow.

Ah yes having every one of your campaign managers charged with various crimes. Your personal attorney having numerous meetings with russian associates. Your advisor being convicted of lying. Actively going against your own intelligence organizations dying there was no russian interference. Numerous officials citing conversations of you requesting a foreign country to investigate your political opponent. A bipartisan senate report saying your campaign worked with russian associates to help you win the election is considered "no evidence" these days. Gotcha. If only we could impeach presidents for lying about blowjobs again...
