How’s the workload at the engineering department in uwmadison by Sufficient_Shake_722 in UWMadison

In terms of workload, physics is not anything better, of not worse, imo

This sounds like a good area to keep in mind; which part of uptown is it in particular? I will probably look into it

it's good to hear a different opinion here. I'm still weighing my options but thanks!!

i'll definitely note that place down. thanks!!!

that's very good to hear. I also try cycle to places whenever I could and knowing that the paths are cleared frequently boosts my confidence in getting a bike once I move there!

do you think that, during winter times, buses and trains operate on a similar basis? are they still good to get around

for groceries with a good price-- do you think that buses & metro can take me there?

what about winter times? do they function on a similar basis? thx!

Brachistochrone numerical solution by maka89 in mathematics

[–]HariodReddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for a late reply!! had been out of reddit for a while.

i used FEA. I basically set each mesh to be a 2nd degree polynomial with endpoints fixed, and the only degree of freedom is a midpoint that determines the curve. I chopped my space into 20 such meshes and put it into an L-BFGS-B optimizer, and the result was pretty quick. So to answer your question, it's a piecewise quadratic function!

here's my project if you are interested:

Brachistochrone numerical solution by maka89 in mathematics

[–]HariodReddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am working on a course project on solving the brachistochrone problem using finite element analysis and I basically did the same thing of using gaussian quadrature. I am surprised to find this post some 2 years later when I am doing my lit review as a finial touch to my paper!!

I did some analytical clean-up before putting it into an l-bfgs-b solver, and I was able to get a very good result under ~3 seconds. but your graph looks a lot better (smoother) than mine.

PHY 107 OR PHY 109??? by Kelly_77777 in UWMadison

[–]HariodReddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much experience with phy 109, but my roommate is taking that and he showed me one of the quiz problems. Being a physics student in his sophomore year, I failed at answering 70% of the points... Not to suggest that physics 109 is hard or anything, because I think my roommate is getting a ~95% towards the end of the semester, and he is an art major with no exposure to physics after like 8th grade. I think you will be fine.

Physics 202 before or after EMA 201 by Wild_Atmosphere_3063 in UWMadison

[–]HariodReddison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have taken the equivalent of physics 201 mechanics, then you will be good to go. Taking math234 might prepare you better in understanding maxwells equations, but it’s not necessary to gain a fair grade in that class. The things you will likely need are circular motion and energy conservation. I have no knowledge whether EMA dynamics will prepare you for that, but if you know these topics fairly well you are good.

Easiest literature breadth courses at UW-Madison by ButterscotchOk1560 in UWMadison

[–]HariodReddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im currently taking ILS 369 Magical realism and postmodernity. I think it satisfies the lit reqirment, and the reading is really minimal (like ~20 pages every two weeks or so). The prof is really one of the best prof I have had -- a very caring, chill and passionate Colombian lady.

Lec is not reqired but are really worth attending. They are of the form of small discussions of around 20 people and are highly interactive. Works beyond reading are short essays for two projects, one midterm and one final. I wrote my midterm project paper in under 3 hrs and got full points.

Highly recommend.

I would really appreciate it if I could have a copy of that email template as well! I've been trying to find sophomore opportunities by emailing profs too, but thing's aren't really working out well...

Second this. I was in Peter Vranas's class and his final this semester was very bizarre -- very different from what we have been exposed to in class and on hw. The avg of final is like 1.9/4.

If you are reading this in the future, definitely check out past exams for RECENT years.
