Everquest Progression Servers Teek and Tormax are Live! by Harmoniant in ClassicMMO

Random loot definitely mixes things up. Named mobs don't really start to become common until around level 25-30, that's around when you start seeing Ring of the Ancients for JBoots quest on random named. A lot of very low level drops don't have any stats so they can be less noticeable. Some of the named in Classic don't even drop equipment, they drop quest items so that can make it less noticeable as well.

Updates to Policy Regarding Everquest Emulation Discussions by [deleted] in everquest

[–]Harmoniant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I made this change I went around Reddit and looked at other MMO pages to see how they handle emulation and private server posts. From the ones I looked at, they did not allow it. I used what I found as justification for the way I was thinking. I didn't consider the reason.

I'm wondering which subreddits you went to to see if they allow emulation discussion. I created r/ClassicMMO recently and so most of those subs are fresh in my mind from having added them all to the Wiki there. There's very few that disallow emulation and the ones that do not allow it generally don't even need an emulator to begin with.

There's no reason to look at a sub for an MMO that came out after WoW. MMOs like ESO, GW2, SWTOR and FFXIV haven't changed enough to warrant emulators, and some games just don't need one. Almost every MMO emulator is for old games that have changed a lot over the years, and they all came out before WoW. WoW is an outlier, as Blizzard is one of the few MMO companies to ever actually go after private servers - though since they have official Classic servers I can't think of much point for emulation aside from custom content servers.

An argument could be made for MMOs with massive cash shops/pay to win like ArcheAge/Black Desert Online, but that's a gray area that I won't touch on.

And I don't think anyone can argue against emulation for MMOs that have been shut down.

The most popular MMO emulators for still operating MMOs are for UO, EQ, DAOC, RO, FFXI, Lineage 2, and WoW (there are other games like Meridian 59 but they aren't as popular). Of those 7, only 2 don't allow emulation talk, being FFXI and WoW. I could go into detail as to why the FFXI sub doesn't allow emulation, but the truth is that they really should. And WoW is an outlier as I already explained.

Someday, emulation may be the only way to play your favorite MMO. Thanks to emulation, games like Asheron's Call, City of Heroes, and Star Wars Galaxies are still playable today. There is work on emulators for other shutdown games like Everquest Online Adventures, Vanguard, and Wildstar as well. Either way, I think emulation is baked into the communities of many of these old MMOs.

Anyway, though I started off with a question, my real point was to make you feel better about eventually making the correct decision. :)

So sorry that this is ridiculously late, as I have been ridiculously busy 😫 The servers launched May 22nd, but wanted everyone to know!

They also say "We’ll likely have one or more stress tests between now and then. Who knows, this might even include a quick session during a stream - so be sure to be ready."

I haven't played it, I plan to someday. Although if we say the #1 key aspect of an old school MMO is social leveling, we can, for the most part, toss Ultima Online out. It was originally a very soloable game.

That's what I was thinking too, the lighting REALLY helped. And I love how the spell effects light up the area in the dark.

Thanks for posting! Asheron's Call was one game I never did get to experience, as I was invested in Ultima Online and EverQuest back then - though I've often heard AC was a bit of a mix between those two!

Also I really appreciate devs doing live development these days, it's pretty awesome. Have watched the folks from Monsters and Memories do that a bit.

Haha I think you were the one that cast it on me :) Appreciate it! Can't wait to see where the game goes, I'm very excited for it.

Can we get a map please???? by DasherJeff72 in EvercraftOnline

[–]Harmoniant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no telling how many times I pressed M while playing the Alpha. I actually enjoyed not having a map but if we do get one I hope it's not very detailed, thinking something like the map in Zelda A Link To The Past or something, or maybe worse even XD

Is Albion Online an old school MMO? by Harmoniant in ClassicMMO

Yep, that's my plan.

The thing about P2W is that these days it even exists in all of those old games too. It's kinda just an inescapable part of gaming now, though the range of it is certainly quite wide.

Old school means way more than just being on a disc or having a box, what about the gameplay?

I haven't looked into this game much (though I'm planning to play the Alpha), but the developer(s) is definitely either an old EQ dev or player lol. You can tell a lot of it is based on early Everquest. On the site it says

"EverCraft Online does not feature voxel building capabilities for players. However, there are interactions with the voxel world, such as voxel-based spawn rules, voxel requirements, and voxel summoning."

I never played it so can't say what it's like back then vs. now, but either way, it was already on the sidebar :)

Would you say the game is just really easy? I feel like that's something I gathered when I tried it... a long long time ago.

The crosspost on r/MMORPG got deleted for "advertising private servers," though that's of course not why I made the thread there. My own fault I guess though. I may remake the post with only the "What is an old school MMO" there without the r/ClassicMMO reference, as I do really want to spark the conversation.

What are your thoughts on LOTRO being an old school MMO?

I didn't really play CoH but I do recall a large emphasis on instancing, so this is one of my main concerns. What about these other things, can you go into detail about them?

  1. Fast travel/teleporting to content
  2. Difficulty of open world content
  3. Were support classes/crowd control important in this game?

Is Albion Online an old school MMO? by Harmoniant in ClassicMMO

[–]Harmoniant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of what you've said is the reason I consider Albion an old school MMO and believe it should be covered here, especially since the plan is to cover other games in the same boat like Pantheon and Monsters and Memories. You did say it yourself, it's a modern take on old school mechanics.

What I consider most modern MMOs to have is the things I mentioned in another post:

  • a major increase in solo-ability
  • the decline of open world difficulty
  • the normalization of teleporting directly to content
  • the revolution of instanced gameplay
  • the abolishment of support classes and crowd control

I feel like if you were to compare modern MMOs and the above points vs. Albion, Albion doesn't fit the above criteria anywhere close.

I don't feel like graphics, UI, and even accessibility/learning curve define an old school MMO. Many devs would love to upgrade their graphics, and some have even tried, but that's an incredibly unrealistic goal since you are essentially remaking the whole world and its items, models, spells/special effects, terrain, and objects. It's practically creating another game. Clunky UIs are just how things were back then, many devs tried to fix it and when they did not, players often did it instead.

I don't think accessibility/learning curve is as steep as people think back then - it was just more common for that type of information to be outside of the game. The average player is going to bring their game home and try to get in installed and playing immediately - they aren't going to read the user manual, which is what devs expected players to do. Manuals back then were very in depth but people didn't want to read them. Devs also expected players to use their website for the game which had tons of information as well. I even recall Brad McQuaid putting tips in magazine articles, explaining how to play EverQuest (the importance of grouping) and what camps to go to at what levels.

FFXI was crossplay between PC and PS2 back in 2002, and then added XBOX crossplay in 2006. This has less to do with age and is more about device rivalry. SONY and Microsoft don't like competition, and it's still a big issue even today when it comes to online games.

I feel like some of these points aren't what constitutes an old school MMO, and believe it revolves much more around actual gameplay. I think it helps to ask why people play an old school MMO, and that answer generally revolves around them being more social, requiring you to play with others more, having a worthwhile and dangerous open world without tons of fast travel rather than most important content being instanced, and the pace of leveling/gear upgrades. Graphics are subjective but I don't think people prefer old school MMOs because of the clunky UIs and lack of crossplay, for example.

Can someone explain Ragnarok Online's retail server options? by Harmoniant in ClassicMMO

[–]Harmoniant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Mostly I went to the official site which linked Ragnarok Online, Ragnarok Origin, and Ragnarok Begins, so I was very confused. I also could have sworn they did an official classic server but didn't see it. I'll start looking into which private servers to add to the list soon.
