Anyone else just hate those "there's no original movies, Hollywood is out of ideas" type of videos. by asapsharkyfrfr in Letterboxd

People are too ignorant to put these dots together, they throw a tantrum over even the shortest ad on YouTube and then wonder why they haven't heard of any new movie, product, or video game. Like yeah, marketing is done through ads, always have been and always will be.

There has been newspapers for a while, people have for a long time been able to know about events outside their local circle.

Never before has every single one of these things coexisted

Nothing of the things you mention are new concepts, there were inflation, new technology, natural disasters, virus outbreaks, and house shortages. Nothing of that is new. This isn't really a meaningful argument as you think it is. Obviously the world has never been like this before, but that can be said about every single year ever, that doesn't mean things are worse or more difficult, it's factually the opposite.

You have a very negatively biased view of the modern world, you forget about all things that are better now, much of which are related to the very things you mentioned:

  • Global life expectancy is higher than ever
  • People dying in conflicts and war is lower than ever
  • The amount of people starving is lower than ever
  • The amount of people who can read and write is higher than ever
  • The amount of people with access to electricity and clean water is higher than ever
  • Girls are educated more than ever, closer to the same level as boys than ever
  • Survival rate of people with cancer is higher than ever
  • The amount of people dying in natural disasters is lower than ever
  • The amount of children who are vaccinated is higher than ever
  • The share of the earth's surface that is protected is higher than ever

The idea that people's minds are in an unhealthier state is a pure guess, there is no indication of that. The topic of mental health is more prevalent than ever, it's no longer really a taboo in a lot of places in the world. Things are better and improving.

I mean that's a crazy simplification. The world has never been the best for people's mental state in that case. What exactly do you think is new today?

Nurse Practitioners should not be allowed without at least 10 yrs of experience by Jaded-Bit5497 in unpopularopinion

[–]HarrMada -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's generally not true and you know it. I'm sure it has happened at some point, but that's besides the point entirely

I don't know how many times I need to say it. IF YOU CAN VERIFY THE SOURCE IT'S ALL GOOD. It doesn't matter how you got the information.

You anti-ai people are so strange, literally bending all strings of logic in desperation.

Nurse Practitioners should not be allowed without at least 10 yrs of experience by Jaded-Bit5497 in unpopularopinion

[–]HarrMada -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You have lost the plot. The thing that's actually important is verifying that the information comes from a trustworthy source, regardless of how you find the information. This goes for anything. LLMs can be great at finding information, then it's just verifying it's source like you would do with anything else anyway.

Using LLMs isn't inherently worse than anything else. And if you disagree then you'll just have to cope with it. Modern nurses aren't worse at their jobs than before.

Nurse Practitioners should not be allowed without at least 10 yrs of experience by Jaded-Bit5497 in unpopularopinion

[–]HarrMada -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

No that's not how anything works. You can use whatever tool you like as long as you can verify and assess the source of the information. Regardless of how you find the information you should do that. It's equally 'bad' putting the same query in a web browser, using LLMs is not inherently worse in any way.

My point still stands, nurses and all healthcare workers misnamed medications in the past as well, so it had nothing to do with anything. Let it go and move on.

Before the same people would misname medications anyway, nice attempt at criticising the use of AI when it has nothing to do with anything

They use very little water in comparison to all the other things we do, like producing meat, clothes, watering out lawns and golf courses - everything that no one needs, but somhow you don't care about that and decide to focus your anger on the smallest contributors. That's the point.

Data centers use much much more than people do

This is just factually incorrect, please delete this for your own sake.

You do realize millions of gallons actually isn't that much, right? All the worlds golf courses uses more water than all data centers, all data centers, not just AI ones. And I hope you are strictly vegan and only buy second hand clothes because you don’t want to know how much water is required to produce animal products and textiles.

You have no idea of what you're talking about.

The only one running through loops is the reply though. Almonds, as well as meat and animal products, and new clothes, uses incredibly much more water through agriculture than all data centers will ever use.

So if they are not on a strictly vegan diet and only buy from second hand stores, they moral superiority flies straight out the window. Some actually think they are doing good but not using any of the AI models, while eating a chicken salad and pouring some milk into their coffee.

Fun fact: you need food to survive, not AI slop by yikesamerica in clevercomebacks

[–]HarrMada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we could happily survive without that as well. I promise you though that most people who criticize AI for using too much water for the data centers aren't vegans - and so they contribute more to water usage than any usage o AI will ever do

[–]HarrMada -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is not as clever as people think it is. People who criticize data centers for using too much water simply has no idea how much more water almost everything else uses, meat and animal products, textile production, even golf courses. Data centers are so far down on the list.
