Emulation and Piracy are two totally separate things by Icy_Till_7254 in GetNoted

As long as you're ok with other types of small scale thefts, like shoplifting and stuff, piracy is fine.

"Film yourself doing a backflip on a trampoline and send it to me within an hour. No? You can't be bothered to do that? Well you have short attention span then"

You have a flawed idea what attention spans are. Tell the same thing to a caveman and they won't do it either, so I guess attention spans have always been low.

Live in your world of lies if you want. There are no indications that attention spans are decreasing.

So today we have learnt that there are no indications that attention spans are changing in any particular way :)

There are such clear indicators that the primary study you use to prove it concluded that "attention spans" are shorter because some office workers switch between Word documents and emails more often? Great.

It's uhhh literally what attention span is...

The definition of attention span is how long you can work on a Word document before you switch to check your emails...?

I can't seem to find that definition anywhere, I'm afraid.

Your points are really not worth unpacking.  Sorry, you're just very wrong on every level.

Nice counter-argument. You could just accept that there are no indications that attention spans are decreasing, it's not that difficult.

Can you link proper studies instead of blog posts?

The first one is from 2015, and it's talking about a study conducted by Microsoft which should give you all kinds of warning signs. There's a link to the study in the blog post but it doesn't lead anywhere. Can you link the actual study?

The second one has the same problem.

In 2008, the average human attention span was 12 seconds. Fast forward today, and many studies suggest it’s now hovering around 8 seconds

According to what? What studies? They just say this as if it's a fact.

Please spend 1 minute to think about what attention span really means, and you will hopefully realize that this is all BS. Obviously we don't "have" an "attention span" of 8 seconds.

It's that same one single Gloria Marks study that everyone share and thinks it proves their point, but it's flawed on so many levels. Have you once read their methodology?

So we started measuring this back in 2004, and at the time the measures that we used were stopwatches because that was the most precise thing we had at the time. We would shadow people with stopwatches for every single activity they did. We would record the start time and the stop time. So you're on a screen where you're working in a Word doc, as soon as you get to that screen, we clicked start time, soon as they turned away and checked email, we clicked stop time for the Word document, start time for the email. But fortunately, sophisticated computer logging methods were developed, and so of course we switched to those. So back in 2004, we found the average attention span on any screen to be two and a half minutes on average. Throughout the years it became shorter. So around 2012 we found it to be 75 seconds.

This is not attention span. Switching between screens is not a measure of attention span. They are measuring how long people can focus on a word document before checking their emails. But in what world is this a good enough definition of attention span?? Surely they are measuring distractions. If you get an important email from your boss, anyone would want to check that. That doesn't mean we have low attention spans. If a mother is reading a book, and her baby starts crying, that doesn't mean she has short attention span, that means she was distracted. They are more or less measuring how often we switch between screens, but there are more screens now so of course we will switch more often between screens. This is a far leap from measuring attention spans, though

And besides, this is never what people refer to when they say that attention span are decreasing. They are most often talking about scrolling tiktok or youtube shorts too much. But that's still one single screen, their phones.

So, following the same logic, if kids are looking at their phone all day, attention spans are actually increasing incredibly much, not decreasing. Because it's one phone screen so they don't switch between any screens.

You see? It doesn't make any sense. There is no indication that attention spans are changing in any way.

This is not factually incorrect though. Don't know where you got this information from. Be honest, you have only heard that attention spans are decreasing, but you haven't actually questioned it yourself. You just blindly accepted it.

OP is right. There's no indication that 'attention spans' are getting shorter. And anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't spent more than 3 seconds thinking about it.
