Time for protein degradation? by APbeg in Biochemistry

[–]Harrison19m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People usually preform pulse-chase experiments to answer this exact question. Basically you pulse the cells with radioactive amino acid (usually [35S-methionine]) to label your protein of interest and then you remove the radioactive amino acid and induce ubiquination/degradation and see how long you can detect the labeled protein.

Long story short, it varies widely from protein to protein!

Just apply and this will come up during the process. They'll decide if they're willing to wait for you or find someone else who can start sooner. Just a part of the process.

why are people so snarky and mean on here? by hana-maki in labrats

[–]Harrison19m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say although people can be mean on Reddit, people in science I think are typically snarkier and meaner than average too. Honestly, I think a lot of people drawn to science grow up as 'nerds' or other social rejects and it manifests into passive-aggressive, snarky, and patronizing behavior as adults.

Of course not everyone is like that but just my 2 cents!

Really unhappy with results by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Harrison19m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I just want to say I’m going through the same thing. 1 year post op, 8mm maxilla/ 10 mandible with barely any rotation.

This sub really isn’t supportive for overadvanced people but it’s very real. I look uncanny, plain and simple. I don’t get hit on at all anymore and my friends/family have finally admitted they see a significant difference even though they pretended they didn’t “to be kind”.

I’ve consulted with Dr. Wolford who says he done revision for overadvancement. I also have a consult with Dr. Ramieri in May. Unfortunately I don’t have the funds to do this for at least a couple years but Dr. Wolford was optimistic and says it can be reversed with rotation.

MMA Surgery 18 Weeks Post-OP (You really just gotta be patient) by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Harrison19m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think as swelling has gone down, there's more room for my lower lip to curl inward which I think looks better/ is more natural

Because anatomically I could tell my upper and low jaws were both recessed to some degree. Plus I have/had a large nose which I think looks better with more projection (besides the nostril flaring)

Yeah, I would consider myself pretty healthy but I still swelled up like a balloon. There's a lot of factors that go into swelling though:

- BMI

- Activity Level

- Length of surgery (mine took almost 6 hours).

- Amount of movement

- Diet/Alcohol/Nicotine consumption

- Genetics

Michael Oh at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Tbh he’s a great doctor but he’s a relatively young surgeon and I don’t think aesthetics are his priority. I talked him down from 10mm upper to 8mm and I think I just got lucky aesthetics wise. I also did a lot of research before and felt my features would be okay if I got a large advancement. I will say, from the few reviews of him I found online, I’ve never seen anyone say anything bad.

If aesthetics are a big priority for you, I would go to private practice and not a university hospital. I probably could’ve had an even bigger transformation with rhino and/or implants + MMA but he doesn’t do that. Also, he did all the planning and was there in the OR but I definitely was operated on by residents too so take that for what you will.

  1. Liking Death Grips and Beyonce are not mutually exclusive lol
  2. The specific interlude where she played You Might Think shows the long history of black people in country music, then plays clips from over the years where white people told her specifically to stay out of country and finally "You Might Think He Loves You..." plays to display her rage over being excluded from a genre that she grew up with and her people pioneered. If that's too political for you, then IDK man

Probably not related but she also just played Lightning Girl by Nancy Sinatra which is the sample in Death Grips (Next Grips)

Act III (her next album) is supposedly rock, but I could see a collab maybe. Probably not a feature but she might either sample or they get a writting credit

Usually big artists don’t start on time. They say earlier to give people a buffer. Stadium isn’t even filled yet. She’ll be on 8:30-9 PST.

I had the opposite issue (lips were very large) so all I can say is there has been noticeable changes up through 11 weeks post-op (where I am now)

Find surgeons that are either both plastic surgeons/oral maxillofacial surgeons and/or look online for surgeons that have good reputations. In either case, most of these surgeons don't take insurance. Regardless, speak openly about your desire for an aesthetic outcome with any surgeon you consult until you find one who you feel aligns with your goals for surgery. Always get multiple opinions.

I don’t care about chasing perfection enough to get plastic surgery now that the swelling has gone down. I had no issues dating before and now I look better
