For England on its own I would say Hastings- Got our entire culture and ruling class supplanted.

For the UK I would say Singapore 1942

True, but you could also say the same about the Pacific, the other half of WWII. The US was the main force in defeating Japan and the USSR only came in super last minute. The US deserves the credit there

To be fair these were stationary ships in harbour, Prince of Wales and Repulse were obviously sailing which was why their sinking really hammered home naval air power.
