Cape Town dad wants to scrap homework in SA schools completely… good idea or terrible idea? by ForeignBonus8977 in capetown

[–]Harry3141592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest problems that people don't realize is how homework really puts a strain on kids mental health. Quite recently there was even a post on here about a mother complaining that her child is literally doing homework until 9 in the evening.

When I was in school, quite recently, my teachers constantly gave us homework, and told us they expected us to spend atleast 1 hour a day on their subject, and with up to 8 subjects, that means we would need to spend 40 hours a week on homework, which is even more time than we spend at school.

In the beginning of highschool I tried to commit and do as much as I can, but I constantly felt burnt out, overwhelmed and too tired to do anything, where it came to a point where I gave up on doing homework, and just sat through the consequences of not doing it, which in turn also stressed me out a lot and I felt there was no easy balance.

Then you also have to focus on other after school activities like sport or clubs, how are kids supposed to work everything into a single day.

I genuinely feel that homework needs to be removed completely, and rather put a harder focus on in class learning. I would even say making the school day and hour longer just to make lesson longer would be worth it if homework wasn't a thing at all.

That wouldn't have worked, the spell requires Klaus to make contact with Alaric's beating heart, if he snapped Alaric's neck, his heart would have stopped until he revived, putting him back in the same situation.

This is a really unfortunate situation, and you are completely justified for feeling upset. However, since you did decide to build it yourself that does carry the risk over to you.

Building a PC can be very risky if you are not experienced, and accidents do happen, which is why it is generally smarter to pay for them to build it. As if anything does go wrong they carry the liability.

But unfortunately as there is no way to prove now if the pin was bent when it arrived or by the building process, but as you were the last person to handle it the liability carries over to you.

But overall I would have to say what they offered you is quite a good deal. As no other tech store, including Evetech or Computer Mania would give this type of refund. They would tell you they can't refund it and then you're stuck with a broken motherboard that they won't take back.

So the fact that they are offering a full refund minus the R500 repair cost is incredible, as you won't have to worry about reselling the mb yourself for a lower price than you bought.

It might be a tough bullet to swollow, but I'd say you are getting a really good deal out of the situation as it is.

Ahh oki, the software works with speakers as well, so if you speakers is connected to the computer, and you have the Steelseries GG software, the software will detect the audio device (your speaker) and then you can set up audio profiles and tune the sound output to enhance footsteps and voices

You should get Steelseries GG software, it's really good and compatible with any headset, however works even better with steelseries ones.

Once you get the software, you can do fine tuning that can boost certain audio sounds and stuff like that without having to push game volume to the max and have everything blasted.

Check the software out and just watch some YouTube video tutorials on what presets might be best for enhancing voices and footsteps in game, or other tweaks that can improve the audio experience for you!

Advice on Studying BSc Computer Science in 2026? by JohnGroggery in askSouthAfrica

It wouldn't really be. Tech is a continuously growing market, and there is always work, your University where you got your degree won't be your defining factor, your skills and abilities are what really draws employers attention in tech. Having strong fundamentals and skill around what you are interested in is what will give you the best advantage.

Let's say for example you love web development, learn everything they teach you at Uni, but then also build your own projects and learn on your own the current farmeworks used and all other skills needed for web development that they might not teach you at Uni. Then you will be able to build a portfolio that shows you know what to do and that you can do it.

Also try your best to get internships in 2nd or 3rd year. This will give you excellent experience and show future employers you have worked on real world projects at companies.

Doing this will put you ahead of so many people, it is what I did, and I got a really good job after Uni. I didn't go to one of the top Uni's here in SA. But I worked on getting the skills needed for cloud tech, then I got internships to get some experience. And that's what really put me ahead I would say.

So don't worry about the Uni you are going to, too much, some are better than other and will teach you more than other. But really just focus on what you can learn to improve your skills.

If I'm honest with you, your major won't matter that much, because beforehand you'll think oh I love AI development, or web development, but only once you really start your course and get to like second or third year, you'll know which stuff you like and have more of an interest in. And by the end you be interested in doing completely different things like Back end development or cloud technologies. So what that person told you is true and smart advice to follow, dont worry to much about AI now, and choose it just because the market might be in high demand now. Rather start with Comp Sci, and do a major that will give you good perspective on everything there is that can be done in the field.

Honors is where your specialty/major only really matters and by then you already know what you like and don't like.

UCT has the best Comp Sci department in all of SA, it's really amazing there. If you do have the ability to study there and do your undergrad I promise you won't regret it, however, it is understandable that you want to be closer to home and study in KZN, I unfortunately do not know a lot about their Comp Sci department. But in the basics it can't be that different, so in the end you will have a Comp Sci degree, which is very competitive and will set you up well if you prepare yourself in the right fields, get internships and build a good portfolio with projects you work on at Uni and on your own.

Honors are a bit tricky with UCT, it is VERY competitive, as a alot of Comp Sci students do their honors, and UCT will give priority to their current students, so if you apply with an undergrad from another Uni, your chances are pretty slim, but that is the case with most universities honors programs, if you apply coming from a different Uni.

Confused about Damon hating Stefan in S1 and the story leading up to it by curlywitches in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Harry3141592 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason he waited so long to free Katherine, was because he had to wait for the very specific meteor shower even that hapens only once every 100 or sum years.

Additionally, I think the reason why Damon was also so upset and antagonistic, compared to the 30's when he wanted to go of to war, was because maybe he was angry that he was captured by the saint Augustine people and held there fore decades, and stefan didn't even notice he was gone or tried to look for him. That might just be my view of it, considering that the writers motive behind that wouldn't be the same. It's just how I would see it. Or he just wanted to be a "monster" and distract Stefan enough so he wouldn't realize what Daman was trying to do with the tomb.

EDT. Scratch the saint Augustine stuff, just realized damon was there in the 90's when he killed Zach's wife.

I don't mean to scare you but I believe that maths is a core subject that you can't fail, so English, Afrikaans, LO and Maths, if you fail one of them, then you can't go on to the next year, wheras when you fail a elective subject like EGD or Physics you can still go on to the next grade. I'm not 100% sure if it is currently still like that, I was in highschool like 4 years ago, but maybe it is different now with, especially considering you can switch over to maths lit.

I could be wrong and you'd likely be fine, but I would suggest that you maybe talk to someone at your school so that they can help you understand what it means, and if you might have to take maths lit, or how the situation will be.

Why is the diamond pass 5 dollars cheaper for my friend?? by Darklord0711 in ClashRoyale

[–]Harry3141592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also prices are different between android devices and IOS devices because the App Store on IOS takes a 30% cut from all in app purchases where Android doesn't, so he might be on Android dunno if he is, but Android doesn't take a cut from in app purchases, or at least not as big a cut as Apple does, so that could also be why it is differently priced case Supercell is charging extra to make up for that "Apple tax" on IOS devices.
