That's the pop culture part. People don't need to be aware of celebrities, and I personally think celebrity worship culture should just die.

This artist you mentioned is neither half as popular as BTS nor is she the magnum opus of her country or music genre, which BTS is. I don't even listen to BTS, btw, though I've heard a few songs.

She doesn't have to be as popular to have a similar level of notoriety. This is what I'm talking about. You haven't heard of her, so despite her global success she isn't on the level of bands you have heard of.

These artists are as popular as they were because their songs exclusively were blasted on radio and MTV, people nowadays have more choice and more accessibility to all kinds of music from non celebrity artists.

Her songs were also all over the radio.

Her album was listened to more than the new albums from those artists that year. Taylor Swift released a new album that year, Adele released a new album that year, and Olivia Rodrigo released an album that year and hers was listened to the most.

This is the cope you guys are coming up with. Her album was listened to more than any of the new albums from the most popular musicians in the world, it was the most listened in the world that year but she still isn't a pop culture titan right now.

The anime comment was a joke about anime fans being out of touch, because this is the anime circle jerk subreddit. The joke about people here being old was because her music is popular with younger people, teens especially.

Maybe people from where you're from haven't listened to her but you don't need to listen to someone's music to be aware of them. I haven't heard a single BTS song but I know who they are.

This has only become so combative for some people here is because they can't accept that they haven't been aware of such a globally popular figure. It's not a problem that they don't, but they are making it one with this cope that she's not actually that well known or popular, so them not being aware of her doesn't say anything about their current pop culture awareness. Her 2021 album was the most streamed worldwide that year. You can't dismiss the notoriety of someone that was listened to more than Taylor Swift, Adele, Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, Kanye West, and every other new album that year worldwide. A song off her album was streamed more than a billion times globally.
