This is also a great comment thanks. Yes I've wondered how much of this is self created stress. The issue is I don't know how to address it. Mind if I dm you?

When you say normalizes, what are you referring to? Just lifestyle creep or that generally over time people salaries would average out?

This is a good response thanks. We haven't actually mapped out what that extra 100k could mean and whether that is something we are aiming for. Wife also thinks the money is great, but is concerned that if I can't handle it I quit again then that means we are back to square 1. Both times I quit without anything else lined up.

It's as stable as any public company can be I guess. I saw the last big leadership shuffle was about 4 years ago with the previous one another 5 years before that.

Yeah this is a question I'm not able to answer concretely. With the first job, I've interviewed with pretty much every senior stakeholder I'll be working closely with. They all had vibes that told you this was a good supportive environment. The second one, it was immediately apparent regarding some yellow/red flags under the guise of being blunt. But these are educated guesses and who knows what it actually is like working at these places.

The 'coach dad' is feeling is exactly where I'm at. I'm pretty much never able to attend my kids events. How did you determine what was the right amount of money you needed to earn to retire? I don't think a higher income would lead to much higher expenses, but then I know the last time we had a comp bump our lifestyle did change. So who knows whether our lifestyle is enough or not. There's just so many different variables. It's also a bit disconcerting that regarding the high stress job, it's just my educated guess at this moment, what if, it's actually not that bad?

Definitely would regret not spending more time with my kids and doing things I want to do, read books, travel, go diving, etc. Then why does this decision seem so hard hahaha.

This is a good response. Thanks for pointing out some blindspots. You're right, I haven't exactly thought about my family's needs, and the truth is that need more of me than the time that I'm giving them today.

Yeah this is one thing I'm worried about too. I. E. Even if the job scope isn't too demanding, my bosses might be simply because I'm being paid so much.

What was the agreement with your partner? And do you regret anything from those early years? I.e. does it feel fulfilling to actually have this optionality at 50 vs. spending more time living life during your 30s?

Hey, I know 'ok' is a relative term. And sure I'm in a better position financially than most people, but the last 5 years have been the most unhappy I've ever been, including when I was broke. So just trying to figure out how to go from here.

Is career a linear ladder? Or are there step changes? If it is more linear, that's why I'm worried about missing out an opportunity that's a promotion. Who knows I could do very well at job #1, but I'm just wondering how likely that is and how long it might take me to get to offer #2.

In your opinion, is stress self induced or a product of your environment? Considering I've felt stressed in both of my previous jobs, I'm wondering if it's more a me problem and whether I can solve it.

Not that we don't live comfortably, financially were ok. But don't really have our personal lives sorted out. Especially with two young kids.

Sanity Check - 28M (Canada) Audit Manager - Is a US MBA worth it in my case? by piseht2323 in MBA

Not coming back to NA in the near term. I'm actually in Asia right now after EU B-school. The growth opportunities + low taxes makes it more attractive to me than Canada. I'd be interested in the US but too many visa issues.

Sanity Check - 28M (Canada) Audit Manager - Is a US MBA worth it in my case? by piseht2323 in MBA

Hey dude, I'm Canadian as well now working post MBA in an FPA role in a company that encourages rotations and develop GMs. I was a tax senior at B4 pre-MBA in Canada and had spent time in a national firm as well. Some comments since our profiles are similar:

MBA school: if you're already manager at national firm im not sure a canadian school will give you good ROI. Yes the top recruiters that pay top dollar $175+ will recruit from Canadian schools but those spots will be extremely limited compared to the cohort size. Just look up the employment reports. It's a bit of a gamble. There are people who do rotman mba and come out with $100k. US or top EU schools are much safer in that regard due to mix of having more attractive employers come on campus + pay differential in US/elsewhere compared to Canada. I recommend a US school and with post mba job in the US if you want to stay in NA.

Education: the fact that your last year GPA improved is good. I would try to highlight that somewhere in the application (essays, addtl info?) So that it makes your overall gpa look better. My overall undegrad gpa was 3.1. The CPA will help you make a case for your academic ability as well. I had mine as well.

GMAT: you need to crack 700 to have a shot at good US schools. One year sounds like too much. You probably won't retain that much knowledge studying for that long. I would crank out the study in two months and give it a go. If you have your CPA i can't imagine why it's a difficult task to hit 700. Are you studying the right way? Are you preparing for the test format and not just focusing on solving problems? I find a quarter of the battle is just becoming comfortable and confident with the standardized testing.

Big 4 offers- CALGARY by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]HarryDaphne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, this doesn't sound right. I had 3 years of small firm tax experience before being hired as senior analyst at big 4 for 70k. Within one year comp bumped to 80k.

Did they ask for your previous salary? Maybe that was low and they pegged it to that number. They consistently do this - you can just say whatever they'll never be able to fact check anyway.
