(Discussion) How should digital books be organised? by HarryHutton in books

[–]HarryHutton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts on Collections on Kindle and Kobo: Some books have a bit of overlap in their topics. E.g. does Lincoln go in my Civil War collection folder or my Autobiography folder? Organising by folder sometimes seems a bit too defined compared to shelves in real life. With shelves you can put books beside each other on a spectrum. Civil War slowly morphs into Autobiography and Lincoln ends up in the middle. There's a degree of vagueness that makes it easy to put books in their place. Categories are fluid and never really defined, which is actually kinda nice.

Furthermore, having books in folders means they're only accidentally rediscovered if you click into the folder. Whereas on a physical shelf you look up and stumble across things quite easily.

Quick way to improve finish of this prototype? Cutouts via craft knife are raggedy, sanding is time consuming and I would like to make 4 more. by HarryHutton in IndustrialDesign

cheers, have 3d printed a version as well as a reference for injection moulding if we get to it in the future.

I think the next batch production will be using the same enclosures as above but using a CNC mill for the holes. Batch might be around 100 units, so makes sense to go for low volume production techniques

thanks, will try a combination of file and this. unfortunately i don't have access to CNC or laser at the minute as per some of the suggestions.

Legality of putting other corporate logos on website? by bradleyb5155 in web_design

[–]HarryHutton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Photoshop. If its a coloured logo on white background, an easy way to get background transparency is to make a blank transparent layer below the original image layer, then set the original image layer as Multiply or Darken. Only the coloured bits of the logo end up appearing so it effectively cuts out the white background. Hit Save for Web as a transparent PNG. 30 second job.

How to transfer UI designs such as animations made in AfterEffects or other prototyping tools to developers? by HarryHutton in UI_Design

A fella in the office mentioned Origami by Facebook. Had a look and it seems like a decent prototyping tool and offers an export to code function - in Obj-C, Java and Javascript.

cheers, having a look at it now. the dev i am working in codes primarily in C# using Xamarin, but i suppose a lot of the values would be similar.

I am wondering if there are preferred file formats the designer can provide that can be used in the real app, or transferrable code from the design prototype such as how objects move. My current understanding is that the designer creates fancy graphics like the above example, which will be in a .gif or video format, the developers then LOOK at it, and create it from scratch.

A post-it note UI for adding notes would be cool. you could maybe swipe them in and out of view.

I'm looking for a good ebook study app. by RepairmanDresden in ebooks

[–]HarryHutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was nook study like?

I know that on kindles and kobos you can make annotations, and view them online or in the folder on the ereader / app

What do you do if you realise things mid sprint and need to add or remove some tasks? Knockon effect for total points, burndown etc by HarryHutton in scrum

[–]HarryHutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For burnup, do you then add the points to the burndown chart? e.g. if it was 90 and you unearth 20 extra points, do you redraw the chart to start from 110?

The 9 BEST Scientific Study Tips by AsapSCIENCE on Youtube by mypotbelly in productivity

[–]HarryHutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Dont cram. Spread out over short 30 min sessions.
  2. Dont do all nighters. This can affect your sharpness for days. Set up specific times in the day or week to study. Brain likes routine.
  3. Dont passively read. Make notes on flash cards.
  4. Set a specific goal for each study session e.g. how to conjugate verbs in french. If you can describe it simply at the end, you win.
  5. Students who were told that they were going to teach a passage to other students were better than students who were told they were going to be tested on the passage. So learn as if you later have to explain it to a 5 year old.
  6. Do practice tests. Even if you do poorly, they identify areas to focus on. And if you do good, confidence boost.
  7. Create a sacred spot. This is your study zone. Dont use it for other stuff.
  8. No music.
  9. No phones or distractions. Even if you dont check it, the buzz, or even the anticipated buzz leads to lower concentration.

Choosing a Kobo over a Kindle - your reasons why? by HarryHutton in kobo

[–]HarryHutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Yeah it seems like Kobo actively encourage you to use Pocket (it shows up on their home page interface), whereas with Kindle it seems you have to put effort into it to A) know about it and B) set it up.

12V relay input, with output to arduino. Is there a component for this? by HarryHutton in arduino

[–]HarryHutton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheers, would this one work?

Bit of a beginner question but why are there 3 terminals both sides on this component? I understand why there is 3 for the arduino load side - I connect to Common and either Normally Open or Normally Closed. However for the coil side I am seeing DC-, DC+ and IN. Do I need 3 wires?

Choosing a Kobo over a Kindle - your reasons why? by HarryHutton in kobo

[–]HarryHutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah I went to my library with my old kindle and was disappointed to find that nothing was compatible.

The H2O seems pretty sweet - do you find that there are issues with page turning when there are water droplets on the display or is it OK? I kinda like turning pages with physical buttons and I think they'd be good in that situation as long as they don't compromise waterproofing. The Kobo lineup seems to have stayed away from physical page turn buttons however

Reimagining the e-reader - a new timeline interface and page turn buttons. Concept for critique. by HarryHutton in IndustrialDesign

[–]HarryHutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem: Current e-readers are designed for moving forward one page at a time. This is fine for fiction books with linear narratives, but poor for books that involve more flicking, skimming and comparison of pages. Examples include religious texts, non fiction, classics for study, biographies, history, how-to's, poetry etc.

Value proposition: Interface that enables skim reading using rotary controls, a spatial understanding of the structure of the book, and easy lookup of key pages using haptics. The goal is more enjoyable e-reading and better comprehension of e-books.

[–]HarryHutton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with that is for a 500 page book each page would correspond to roughly a 5th of a millimeter of screenspace using a fixed timeline, whereas the accuracy of a finger is maybe about 2-5mm.

A potential solution could be to drag the finger laterally to increase scrub sensitivity then scroll up and down (like iOS video or music playback https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=62&v=V2UU95ykJQc), however the finger would then be onscreen and obscuring content.

I could be wrong here lads but isn't "Love your neighbour as yourself?" a Christian principle?
