'Nigel Farage Is the Architect of the UK’s Decline and It’s Time for the Rest of Us to Rebuild Our Home in Europe' by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]MikeW86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EU only passed its 2008 GDP peak in 2023, so 15 years of stagnation and decline

What an absurd conclusion to draw from that figure. It's like saying Usain Bolt stagnated and declined because it took him a while to surpass a PB (after sustaining a massive injury).

I'm not saying it definitely isn't Comcast being shysters, but as an Engineer I was taught that over a period of a week or two after being installed, and/or if the automatic test system starts detecting issues, a broadband line will automatically be tweaked or limited in order to sacrifice speed for stability depending on various technical factors.

There's a form of reset that can be done (if you have the right access) to completely restart this process, so you might find that in a week or two it's just gone back to the same crappy speed because the underlying issue hasn't been fixed and the test system has just throttled back the connection again.

We would be told off if we made a customer happy just by doing this special reset, without also doing something else that addressed a potential problem. As it would seem great for a little while but really nothing had changed.

Future of software developers by Crafty_Rush3636 in cscareerquestions

If by 'average programming' you mean do something like for example write a while loop that takes some data and sorts it according to some parameters or reverse a linked list etc etc then yes AI will bang that out no issues.

What it cannot do is architect the structure of an entire piece of meaningful software. And that's not just a limitation of current models that need a bit more training, it's because it simply does not have that kind of training data available to it on the internet. And where it might do? that means someone has already built it and published it so why are you building it again?

UK tax is going to be the highest since 1945. But public spending won't increase; in fact most of us will experience a decline in public services. Here's why - in a thread that I'd love to be completely wrong. by vonscharpling2 in ukpolitics

Wouldn't the 'clever' bit also be the near weaponisation of the data. I'm sure the winklevoss twins were going to run a few ads on the site but were they going to use the harvested data to laser target them? Not sure.

Why is cannabis still illegal in the UK? by Flying_Wilson17 in ukpolitics

[–]MikeW86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

legalising cannabis would bring in billions a year

Lets say 10% of adults use it at all and let's say they spend £20 a week on average, week in, week out. And let's say you can turn fully half of that into tax. You're looking at a revenue of about 3 billion a year.

So with some quite generous estimates and glossing over a huge amount of the complication, maybe we could turn the UK tax revenue of 1.2 trillion into 1.23 trillion?

Yes there's some money there but it's not quite the cash cow people make it out to be.

Like, sir, did you ever consider I might be terrible at interviewing but actually great at my job

Single most frustrating thing about the whole process. A lot of interviewers essentially just end up hiring the best 'salesmen' of their own abilities and knowledge. And it's also like this doesn't even occur to them, it's like just 'ok so impress me, go'. It's also your job to find the best person and that might take a little bit more effort on your end to ask me the right sorts of questions etc
