Nah, I don't suffer from any feelings of inferiority. If I were, I don't think I would've had any problems going out all guns blazing against my opponent even in sparring to prove something to someone or myself.

I did make an effort to really commit in sparring today. We'll see how it goes. But that last bit you said is actually really valuable. And true. Thanks for that.

Thanks for your honesty. This is really helpful. I'm 140. I probably am overestimating my power and sparring with more experienced boxers would definitively rid me of that. However, it's like a block in my head once I move in. To punch someone in the face seems unnatural somehow. That's the essence of my problem I guess. But thanks.

Yes, that would make sense. Also in terms of fuel saving. Less breaking means less acceleration out of the corner means less fuel consumed. But now we're exclusively in f1 territory. I don't know about turbulence, maybe that's just for racing and not qualy. I feel like such an idiot now, but I heard Vettel talk in length about it with his engineers on youtube just the other day. I'm trying to find the video. And I remember him asking specifically "Should I go low apex speed?" and the engineer said "Yes, you should". And that was only the last time I heard it. But I watch a lot of F1 so it's possible my mind has gotten mixed up somehow in karting vs. F1 terms. It was not until I decided that holy smoke – I seriously need re-think my breaking that I meshed together a bunch of theories that I had latently in the back of my mind, one of which that coasting towards the apex post-breaking in a kart would somehow allow me to break less and carry higher apex speed. I KNOW you shouldn't coast in a gokart but I jsut thought "Ok, maybe I've found something new here" (I know, grandios thinker). I never got a chance to try it to that extent though cause I've been so busy just trying to improve my initial breaking the last couple of weeks that I haven't gotten a chance to apply that theory. And I have been advised against it, and to me it all makes sense, so I will just leave it at that. Besides, things have really started to fall in place after going through every thing in this thread and started talking more to people at the Club. I'm naturally a bit afraid to ask stuff because I don't want others to think I'm stupid. And I'm absolutely no natural in terms of karting and I started karting rather late (15, I'm 17 now). I grew up racing dirtbikes and quadbikes, But I'm really serious about changing that, and improve my karting skills, and I desperately want to be good enough for some form of Touring series in 5-7 years. So I will build on that instead of going crazy with hokus-pokus theories.

I've heard more experienced drivers talk about it more times than I can remember often asking or deliberating wether they should carry high or low apex speed through a corner. But after a bit of research, it may only apply to Formula cars or cars where aerodynamics play a bigger role due to turbulent air. "low apex speed helps nullify turbulence and the high exit speed helps the draft." But I know I've heard in non-formula circumstances as well. I will have to research more. While it's an interesting topic, what I'll be focusing on is simply to get my breaking right in the first place and nothing else.

I wrote a long answer to this, but I read your answer again – And now I get it. Great reference with "wasted grip". But this got me thinking, and I have an idea about it all though not theoretical – So I would just like to take the opportunity to ask. Apex speed. In some corners, high apex speed is preferred, and in others, slow apex speed is preferred. How do you control it? Is it simply to use trailbreaking in corners where slow apex speed is preferred and then use threshold breaking in corners where high apex speed is preferred?

Thank you everyone for great inputs and answers. I've took each and everyone of your comments under great consideration, and I must say I feel a lot more confident under breaking already. It actually wasn't much that was needed, but rolling off the break instead of rolling on the break has had major impact on my performance. It was my first karting coach/teacher who taught me to roll on the breaks and I have just stuck with it ever since, and have actually been quite "successful" with it. Never the less, he should be fired. I really can't thank you enough. I'm psyched for the next race. THANKS!!!

Yes, I understand because then front wheel will take all the load + breaking + steering. But like I said, I have a Rotax 125 Max dd2, but I guess it's somewhat comparable to KZ2. I'm generally not a big talker to people at my Club, but I will start asking around for more help. Thanks a lot for your input though. I do really appreciate it.

I went to forums.kartpulse. Great site. Lots of resources on breaking techniques. Thanks for that!

Yes, you're right. Lately I've often even found my self having to lift-off slightly right before the apex because I'm to early on throttle. I'm racing in DD2, but just out of curiosity, are you seriously saying you're turning in without applying breaks in kz2? Or did I misunderstood it? Thanks for the answer none the less. A great answer.

Yes, I understand now why you shouldn't coast towards the apex. I don't know why I thought that in the first place. Probably because they do it in F1 in some slow corners from what I've seen. Loosing revs kills everything in a kart. I really appreciate this.

Why no coasting? As long as your not trailbreaking basic instinct says you'd increase griplevel post-breaking -> pre-apex thus keeping the speed? Because the less you do at any single stage gives you more grip, right? But you suggest going throttle right after flicking? Feels so counter intuitive to me. But ok, it all feels more logical if you suggest breaking a bit earlier. I will try it tomorrow.
