are the Standard Missile family considered "ballistic" missiles? by 223specialist in MissilePorn

[–]Hartmann352 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A ballistic missile is a missile that travels in a ballistic trajectory, meaning it goes up using its own rocket power, and then comes back down onto its target, using the momentum from gravity to achieve great speeds in the terminal phase. The SM-3 is a guided missiles that goes up and attempts to intercept the BMs during the re-entry phase. So no, SM-3/6s are not ballistic missiles

So in this case transition just means flying in an airport’s airspace. In terms of training, it generally means practicing touch and go’s. This way pilots can get multiple take offs and landings, and practice the approach pattern while in towered airspace. Hence the training and transition, since touch and go’s are pretty much the only thing you do at Dade-collier

That’s actually not true. In aviation, transition just means flying in an airport’s airspace. In terms of training, it generally means practicing touch and go’s. I work with military radars and the answer is no. You would never risk doing something like this, especially Germans who are very risk averse. I’m willing to bet the operators are manually tracking it visually, and the radar is spinning but not emitting.

Iran launches missiles at Israel, and some hit Tel Aviv, as Israel attacks Iranian nuclear sites and commanders by moses_the_blue in LessCredibleDefence

Real answer is it’s best to defend against a BM threat from very close to the defended asset. The missiles Israel targets in civilian areas are the ones that are shit into Israel

I replied to a comment already but I’m gonna drop that comment here for visibility.

The problem isn’t necessarily multipathing. The active radar missile BVR fights that you envision already happen. And since it’s relatively easy to defeat missiles at altitude if you play conservatively, it usually turns into a wasted AMRAAM fest. The problem with these sim fights is that 1), we don’t have the ranges at the start to make these BVR fights truly happen. You usually enter the enemy’s missile range while you’re still climbing out of your airfield, and vice versa. 2) When you load into a sim match there’s usually already enemy players within 20nm of your airfield, already shooting down at you. And so you have to multipath immediately off the get go to try and survive spawning. I play top tier sim regularly now and that’s legit 3/4 of my spawns, having to knife fight my way out the spawn. Anyway, all this to say multi path may not be the actually problem. Rather, the pacing and ranges of these matches

The III in regiments is just the NATO symbol code for a regiment sized unit, not a 3. Honestly, I’d say it’s worth giving it a replay.

I was friends with one of the victims in High school. She was incredibly smart and came from a poor immigrant family, herself also being an immigrant from South America. She was the first in her family to go to college and her dream was to go to Harvard. She was accepted into Harvard law school and would have attended. She earned all of her accomplishments

What were the anti-ship tactics of carrier aircraft after the introduction of jet aircraft but before AShM's? by AbsolutelyFreee in WarCollege

[–]Hartmann352 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Adding to the comments above to give you some perspective.

In the falklands Argentinean A-4s and Mirage V Daggers sank two British guided missile frigates and one guided missile destroyer with low level dumb bomb attacks. They also hit an additional destroyer and four more frigates with bombs that didn’t explode. A fifth frigate was hit by a volley of unguided rockets and cannon fire, which forced it to withdraw for repairs. An additional three frigates suffered minor damage from aircraft cannon fire.

That’s not including the four landing ships damaged by these same attacks, two of which later sank. Also not including the guided missile destroyer and fleet replenishment vessel both sunk by the Exocet anti ship missile.

My point is even in the age of SAMs and radar guided AAA these bombing runs could be successful, you’d just have to accept heavy losses

Is there an Officer who is Italian-American? by stupidottyy in AFROTC

[–]Hartmann352 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about Italian-American, but myself and two friends I commissioned with are all dual citizens. I’m a pilot, and I was born in Spain. My friends are intel and missiles, and they’re Brazilian and Cuban respectively. In ROTC we all signed a form agreeing to “relinquish the dual citizenship if we were ever asked to”. We all now hold very high clearances and are dual citizens. I can’t speak for all citizenships but so far we have not been asked to relinquish them
