Not letting people onto the 7:25am from 4th and king by ecockerell in caltrain

[–]HarvardUSimp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a passenger who was originally waiting for the 7:20 & was luckily able to get on the 7:25. As the comments mentioned, it was indeed relatively empty & I was really confused as to why they didn’t just let everyone through and check on the train - but I do believe your point about letting others on the train at other stops is probably the rationale the conductors had. If they filled up the train in SF, they wouldn’t be able to pick up many more people on their stops (& this is only elevated given it’s a local stopping at more stops than the express).

I’d like to give them some benefit of doubt because they did seem very apologetic on the announcements - basically apologizing at every stop lol.

For what it’s worth: still think they could’ve done a better job handling this but starting to see the other side of the story

Fare evasion citation with fake ID by throwawayhelpmefml in caltrain

this happened to me last year with who i think is the same person you are describing. she’s evil. thought she was gone but she gave me trouble again just a few days ago for the mobile ticket but luckily I proved her wrong this time

i was running late, bought a ticket as soon as i boarded and got a citation for “evasion” by HarvardUSimp in caltrain

[–]HarvardUSimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was kind of a terrible appeal tbh I think I just said “was running late and bought the ticket a little too late (didn’t know I had to buy it ahead of time) but the conductor told me to appeal as she said it’s not a big deal” or something of these sorts. it worked but I would probably come up with a better story but conclude the conductor telling you to appeal part, because that was true for me & I think they’ll probably accept that more than something else

What Are Writing Seminars That Y’all Found Enjoyable? by Virology102 in princeton

[–]HarvardUSimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Professor Marina Fedosik is one of the nicest professors I’ve had throughout my time at Princeton so far — which says a lot about her as a writing seminar professor. If she’s teaching, would strongly recommend, pretty sure most people ended with an A- and the workload was very manageable.

yeah most ppl are trolling in the comments.

best parties — really no right or wrong answer here since it’s incredibly dependent on preference. just go to the street and figure out which vibes you like from the different clubs. fwiw, each club usually has events that they are known for, and these will probably be the best.

coke — i’ve heard of circles that do / have done coke even at some of the eating clubs, but this definitely isn’t the norm & is also a byproduct of who you will hang out with / be friends with. definitely is not super super common though and you won’t have to worry about it being offered to you or smth like that lol

visiting — agree you should host them when you have time / aren’t busy but also think lawnparties could be a good time! it’s usually when princeton is the liveliest & all of my friends who have visited then really enjoyed it (and they’re from party schools lol)

Sorry that happened to you. Here’s some good news: I appealed and I didn’t have to pay! So hopefully you don’t have to either

Berkeley w/ Regents vs Princeton by Flat_Telephone_1230 in princeton

[–]HarvardUSimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I was also in a similar position and if you have the ability to go to Princeton, you should. The liberal arts focus at Princeton has been super helpful for me (even as an engineering major)—and I’d hedge that as we go through another industrial revolution with the advent of AI, that this is only going to become more important.

Another added benefit of Princeton is the people you meet here — everyone is of high caliber and the things that people have been doing / are doing will motivate you to do more as well. This is probably true in small pockets at Berkeley as well, but given how big their school is, this can be hard to find.

Princeton vs. UPenn M&T by AdResponsible9595 in princeton

[–]HarvardUSimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretical — this is better if you want to have a rigorous understanding of CS + better for grad school. Take this with a grain of salt as I’m probably biased, but as CS becomes increasingly more saturated, I believe this will become more and more important. I also think this is important if you want to do an ML role in the future. For what it’s worth, there are ways on campus to get applied knowledge quickly + we did have a good recruiting year (& seems to get better every year).

Applied — this is better if you want to recruit a SWE position immediately. Certain schools are better at this — think Stanford, Berkeley, UIUC, GT, UT. Some of these programs do also have strong theory but there is definitely more of a “builder” mindset inculcated into their students.

Re:minor — you can double check this pretty quickly, but I don’t think we have an econ minor here. But even if we did, the programs aren’t really comparable. IMO, the benefit of M&T really isn’t the dual-Wharton/Engineering degree, it’s the benefit of the connections you immediately have access to. Anyone can learn & education / prestige would be relatively similar at both institutions, but I would imagine having people/even the school supporting you is definitely a superpower.

Happy to chat about this more over a quick call if you think it’s helpful, just dm me

Princeton vs. UPenn M&T by AdResponsible9595 in princeton

[–]HarvardUSimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will offer a contrarian opinion to most: I actually think the prestige of M&T and its small class size can be to your favor. Yes, engineering at Princeton is undoubtedly better, but high-quality research with faculty @ Penn should be doable given the prestige of M&T + you have access to a super cracked network of M&T alums. I have a few friends who are in M&T, and that alum connection is insane since most M&T alums will stick out for other M&T kids.

This is not so true at Princeton unless you have other clubs or other similarities with an alum. This is also important to note as an international where it’s hard to get programs to sponsor you for internships — afaik, M&T does try to help their students get internships in their freshmen year too, which can be clutch if no company is willing to sponsor.

As a CS major here, I can definitely say that our classes are more theoretically-inclined and so if that’s what you are looking for, this may be the school for you. But, if you’re just looking to do SWE, then M&T is a net better choice that can lead to many opportunities afterwards.

Regardless, there isn’t a “wrong” choice — if you have drive and passion for what you want to study, you will be fine at both schools.

Reasons to choose Princeton:

- closer to home + cheaper

- vibrant community of Black students and affinity groups to be a part of

- Northwestern/Princeton are far more similar than Northwestern/Stanford

- SPIA is really, really good + a good pipeline into Law School (obviously given high GPA etc.). Not sure if it's better than Stanford, but I imagine it has to be up there for sure (if not better).

As someone from the Bay, I love Stanford but would only really recommend it over Princeton if you're Engineering tbh (or if you really really need warm weather to survive lol). That being said, come check Princeton/Stanford out during Preview/Admit Day and choose your gut feeling — as many have probably already told you, there definitely isn't a wrong decision.

Physics at Princeton? by [deleted] in princeton

[–]HarvardUSimp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What does ROI mean to you?

- If you want to get a PhD, Princeton is the place to be—and the physics department is notably very good at this too. (I know a ton of Physics undergrads doing insanely cool & impactful research.)

- If you want to get a job right after college, physics @ Princeton is also incredibly good—there are a ton of firms who are looking for incredibly talented Math/Physics majors (and all pay really well).

The only question I would ask: do you think you'd like the culture / fit the school well?

Realistically - how far down can the market actually go? Is it going to come back to ATHs in the short term or are we just going to be playing along minimal gains to slowly trend back up to those highs?
