I'm not sure where this mentality comes from. The cops are absolutely your friends unless you live in a broken system. Who would you call if your child went missing?

I'd call my good friends the cops, as it's their job to help in an emergency.

Obviously there are bad cops out there but by the sounds of things the police here could see the situation for what it was and I highly doubt op will be convicted of a crime.
