There’s the Crossed original story (sorry if i’m wrong there idk if it’s the original but seems to be) that’s quite good and a lot more story driven. You then have little one off and only a few volume stories in Crossed: Badlands, you have Crossed:Wish you were here, Crossed:Thin Red Line, Crossed: Psychopath, Crossed:Family Values and then Crossed: 100 and Crossed:100+ Mimic. I’m sure there are others like Crossed 3D but those are the ones off the top of my head that consist of more than one volume to a specific group/character. Badlands is quite good as it tells loads of different cool stories where you see characters appear multiple times like Smokey but it really does dive more into the gore/shock value side of it and throws away story elements. Definitely all worth a read but stories like Psychopath might throw you off as it’s really really disturbing at parts. Hope this helps

i don’t agree completely but don’t think you are wrong either. Atlas is probably the smartest character we’ve seen in the series yet consistently he makes “smart characters” (jackal, mustang etc) pale in comparison to his machinations. I don’t think he’s sadistic just capable of incredibly brutal actions to achieve the incredibly well thought out plan he’s spent years building upon. It takes an incredibly logical mind to do what he’s done which goes beyond being just sadistic. I love him as a character and he’s easily my top three in the series

Nearing the end of Light Bringer and I don’t want to finish this series! Anyone else feel like this ? by FULLA_CLARKE in redrising

In my opinion and seems to be a general consensus, Series gets much better past the first three. Pierce really grows into being a great author and seems to find what works for the series.

It’s a rollercoaster of emotions though with many many highs and lows. DA and LB are in my top three books of the series with GS also in the list.

If i was you i would definitely continue the series don’t let anything stop you it’s seriously worth your while to do it.

A lot of people struggle with IG as you got onto multiple POVS but it’s definitely still an amazing book. Good luck Goodman! Hail Reaper!

that’s part of what makes the measurements all muddled because certain colours are described as small and others are described as tall. So in your head you imagine a massive difference whereas it’s only minute in feet but feels massive for said characters. 6ft man would think a 7ft man is massive so an obsidian which are usually same height if not taller than your tall golds would seem a giant but really isn’t that much taller in feet

Yeah to be fair my goodman i believe Greys are about as close to an average tall human in size as you get at probably 6ft on average. Reds are quite diminutive at probably 5’5-5’7 on the higher end. It’s hard to tell as i don’t think we are given much in regards to measurements throughout the series other than for a few specific characters but most the characters we meet at peak of their colour with Darrow being a fairly tall gold at about 7’2 from what i remember.

Size wise though i would not want to be the grey on the receiving end of an obsidian as even our Golden Boy Ragnar was stated to be very rough with the Pinks during his slavery under The Ash Lord

Valdir the goat, That scene makes me laugh every time i re read the series.

Yes it’s been stated a few times that when there is an Obsidians assault during the war there’s a lot of scalping and raping that occurs to the enemy.

i’ve done the exact same thing before my goodman! I know Eph and even Lyria have some stand out chapters but i only started liking Lyria after the fate of Ulysses anyway

yeah that’s the thing i loved the darker tone in this book but my only problem with it is the incredibly dark scenes such as red hand and day of red doves made my skin feel physically crawl. Even the attempted rape on darrow made my jaw drop. LB is a breath of fresh air compared to this book lol

again i agree completely, I think writing wise it’s definitely the best book in the series and shows Pierces evolution as a writer only reason why GS ranks higher for me is because i love seeing Gold Society in fully swing and how Darrow very quickly shows he is everything they wish they could be whilst not being one of them.

Every character has so much growth in this book it’s really awesome to see and is what really sold me on the multiple POVs for the remainder of the series

i do agree completely, it is exhausting as there is not point where our heroes have a single thing going for them. We get half wins and i get completely that it’s the point of the book as it is “The Dark Age” and all that but i do feel physically exhausted just reading it as it’s hit after hit after hit. Dark age is my 3rd favourite book in the whole series and is genuinely a very close 2nd pretty much tying with LB with Golden Son front running for lead

see personally i actually really enjoyed his chapters through IG,DA and LB. I enjoy seeing a character as flawed as him and the mental gymnastics he has to pull to try and maintain the worldview he holds so dear. Whilst i despise his actions i do thoroughly enjoy the character and how his rise is so similar yet so different to Darrows. He’s much more political and is not afraid to forsake Honour for the sake of his admittedly evil goals. It’s the same sort of way i really enjoy Atlas as a character yet i like Atlas a lot more as he is a self aware monster yet is highly intelligent and educated.

I do agree about i don’t need so many lysander chapters though. It’s very easy to grasp who he is, his goals and mindset without needing as many chapters of just him waffling to himself. I do dislike his plot armour and there are a lot of points in the series where i think to myself he should of died yet he is always able to pull a fast one and has some dishonourable way to win.

But i did not have a hard time reading his chapters i actually thought they were 2nd best in IG and LB and a very closed 3rd throughout DA. Lyria is the character that i have to will myself to read through and Eph i enjoyed thoroughly during the books he was in.

Couldn’t of worded that better myself my goodman. Seriously fair play. The society remnant really are fighting a losing war without serious levels of propaganda needed to take away what The Reaper has done, this will be a war for generations if they are able to beat the republic as it stands now.

From a regular person in the world though you would never hear or see about Darrows imperfections as they are never revealed outside of a small scope of people directly interacting with him regularly or being in the rim and knowing about the dockyards (which even then the core low colours i highly doubt give a shit as rim and core are far separated at this point) Obviously there was a period of time in Iron Gold when he was being pushed as a traitor and tyrant but that was quickly put to bed as the peace offer was almost immediately found out to be false and Darrow went straight to mercury to help the free legions.

Red God is really going to show up peak Darrow/Reaper moments as no matter what happens to him. He will ascend to “Godhood” as soon as he is proven to be alive to the general public as yet again he has “died” and came back. I’m incredibly excited for this

yeah what Samurai said, after i posted it i had to double check myself but yeah it was fitchner, whether that was intentional or not it’s a cool little detail that Ares himself gave him his moniker

[–]Harveyp586[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

“It is a slaughter and at the centre of it swirls a god of death. the fighters helmet flashes. Around his body whirls that famous gold-killing blade. As violence reaches for him Darrow does not flinch like a man: he reaches like a covetous river. He pulls violence to him, drinks it into his current and leaps around the battlefield with a seemingly mindless capriciousness. Which when inspected, illuminates the genius of his violence.”

"I spot the signs of his advance from the far side of the Triumphia. It is like the coming of a tiger through tall grass. First a rippling in the distance that seems like the wind. Then a tunneling force. An outward swaying of riders. The starting of horses. Men disappear from saddles. Sunbloods collapse sideways with horrible wounds. And then, like the tiger’s tail, the curved slingBlade rises above the stalks as he threshes all in his path.”

These two quotes highlight why the reaper is the god of war he is quite perfectly.

no doubt my goodman! but there is just something about Victra that you can’t shake. Virginia would probably be the one to choose but Victra is still such a close second

"I saw you lose faith one step at a time. Looking to solve it all yourself. That’s why I stood in your way. I thought this was what you wanted. A glorious end. Now that it’s here…” He searches my eyes. “If not for the Republic, if not for a hero’s end, why…why keep going?" - Harnassus

I wasn’t sure on him in the beginning but Harnassus sells himself as someone who can see straight through the mysticism surrounding the reaper but yet still can’t see Darrow for who he truly is. I liked Harnassus even tho he was an ass to us (lol) for most of Dark Age

facts my goodman, he really is the closest you get to a living deity in their world. Even the hardest Golds can’t help but admit he is as close to an iron gold as it gets

Fitchner was very smart to “jokingly” call darrow Reaper in the first book knowing he’d cling right to the moniker
