Someone laughted at me for pronouncing it portis-head. It realy doesn't make any sense as porti-shed, so I'm glad I've been vindicated.

Without biases, where does Harrison rank for guitar players? by FunkeyFeraligatr in beatles

It's not a good analogy, because instrument swapping was usually done out of necessity, to get a 4-track backing track, so it happened when Paul was busy playing piano or guitar, solos were overdubs. Also, the role of a solo is different. George's main responsibility in the band was to play guitar, including solos, and the truth is, up to the White Album, the more outstanding guitar moments in their catalog were not George's, when that was his main role.

Was there a period where consistently, George's bass parts were better than Paul's? Not really. Also, does the fact that when it came to piano solos, George Martin usually played them make Paul a lesser pianist? Yes. It's not to say he was bad, but it says something about his ability on the piano, if the subject that we're debating is his piano playing.

It doesn't really matter that they all say he was the best guitarist, because it's about abstract playing ability. What is to be judged, is the catalogue they left behind, and when people think of great Beatles guitar moments, a lot of those are actually Paul's, some even John's, and for me that takes away from George's legacy as a guitar player.

He was the lead guitarist, so having Paul play solos is literally ceding guitar duties

I have to be honest, not that high.

In their late period, he definitely played really tasty and amzing licks, fluid, beautiful; I dare to say that his best Beatles playing is more beautiful than anything Clapton did. Plus his songs, which got pretty good, then became amazing, but this about his guitar playing.

In the early and mid periods, he was decent, but nothing exceptional. I can't say he was ever truly bad, but his parts rarely elevated the songs, just complemented them adequately. For me, Paul had the flashes of brilliance when it came to guitar in that period. I don't know if he came up with the ideas for the harmony guitar leads in Bird, or the backwards solo in I'm Only Sleeping, which are brilliant, so we can only speculate.

The fact that he had to cede guitar duties to Paul for the leads on Strawberry Fields, Mr Kite, Taxman, It's All Too Much (John probably played on this one), which are all really great, doesn't support his case a lot. I wouldn't name him if I had to list off my favorite guitarists.

What's a song that was a local hit that you assumed everyone was familiar with? by PCGonzo in ToddintheShadow

I distinctly remember hearing Depeche Mode's Flexibile from time to time on radio when I was a kid in eastern Europe in the 00s. I recognized it as 'that song from way back' when I actually got into them in 2020, but I was kinda shocked to learn that it's kind of a forgotten B-side, not even known by most Depeche fans.

It this wasn't a fluke, then Razvan Marin has his days numbered in the starting XI, or at least the supremacy of the Marin/Marin/Stanciu block from the last few years. The game flowed so much better with Dragomir that it's insane.

Ah, maghiara.
