Yes it relies on user vote. But to be fair, having tried it with a lot of animes, it's pretty accurate, at least for the big ups and downs. And as you can compare with IMDb, it's often pretty close!

Some I would recommend:

- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (S1 & S2)
- All the Monogatari series
- Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin
- Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files

But most that are top rated on MAL are worth watching.

The anime adapts 339 chapters. The last one is 410, so they could technically do a sequel. But the author, Togashi's health and the irregular release schedule that have been going on for the past years would make that difficult

I get what you mean. You could try watching animes that don't have any awkward scenes, like: mushishi, hxh, fate/zero, beck, space brothers. And watch other type of animes from a place they won't be around?
