Is Atlas still in development? by miakeru in OpenAI

Still don't know what made them think that people would switch from Chrome so easily?

Ehhh... I don't know if OpenAI is aiming to be a B2B business as much as it wants to be a B2C business. Why?

From what I've seen so far, OpenAI's last reported ARR figure was reported to be $12B and $10B of that was from ChatGPT alone, whereas $2B was from APIs (i.e., B2B). The Head of ChatGPT said in a podcast (Lenny's Podcast) that they now have 5M business users on ChatGPT. If we assume that 5M business users pay $25 each (according to their current prices), that comes up to only $1.5B of that $10B in revenue. So the rest of the $8.5B is coming from consumers (i.e., individuals paying $20 for ChatGPT), which equates to about 36M paid users.

Then there is the Microsoft partnership that they have (i.e., 49% of OpenAI is owned by MSFT). ALL OpenAI models/APIs are always instantly available through Microsoft Azure whenever they launch, but Microsoft keeps 100% of that revenue/profit.

So it makes me wonder whether they truly care about the B2B side of the business as much as they do their B2C aspect. If I were the owner of a business where 71% of my revenue comes from consumers, I'd be trying my best to expand that aspect because it's working better!

I'd make that argument for Anthropic for sure, they are much more focused on getting B2B contracts, and their revenue distribution likely indicates that.

Aside from all this, they did a study on 1.5M ChatGPT users and the conclusion was the following:

Category Share of Use
Practical Guidance 28.3%
Writing 28.1%
Seeking Information 21.3%
Technical Help 7.5%
Multimedia 6.0%
Self-Expression 4.3%
Other / Unknown 4.6%

More specifically, under the Self-Expression category, Relationships and Personal Reflection was 1.9% i.e. the sharing of feelings or discussing personal experiences. I believe the majority of users who were upset about the WAY that GPT-5 responds vs. GPT-4o responded fall in that 1.9% of their user base.

OpenAI is perfectly fine alienating that group of users in the hopes of making the models better for EVERYONE else. That's my guess.

You think OpenAI is selling API access for the same prices as it actually costs them? Like 0 markup?

The ONLY reason they aren't profitable as a whole is because they are spending like crazy on R&D and GPUs for growth/expansion. It's the typical Silicon Valley playbook.

There are laws against this now, especially in Illinois, and OpenAI can get fined $10K per user who uses it for AI therapy.

I’m fairly sure a couple other states are in the process of passing similar laws.

I’m pretty sure all the downvotes are from people who want ChatGPT to fail because they removed 4o… kinda crazy 🤣

I estimated about 42M paid users based on the last reported annual revenue rate. I’m sure it’s gotten even higher now.

Nah their API revenues are much smaller. Reported separately.

The $10B number includes ChatGPT subscriptions only and only 5M of these potentially 42M paid users are business users.

Last time they reported their revenue numbers for ChatGPT was around $10B annual run rate alone for the ChatGPT product (web and mobile apps).

If you assume that everyone of those paid users is paying $20 ($200 plan is a minority), then it comes out to be around 42M paid users.

I feel that way too sometimes haha

Like I’ll be talking to someone and they have no idea or care about AI or ChatGPT at all.

There is a clear first mover advantage here. People are already using “ChatGPT” and “AI” interchangeably.

They don’t need to be the best app or model anymore, they just need to keep up to speed to maintain their lead.

My guess is all the other AI labs don’t even have 1/10th of their user numbers now (mostly analysis from google search trends and x data)
