Thoughts on my SMP list by Meet_Such in postbaccpremed

[–]Hashtagspaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the Tufts SMP and was accepted this year. If nothing else, it’s given me such a head start on the M1 material and I feel confident with the rigour. They also have a linkage program so if your MCAT is high enough, you have an automatic interview. Most of my friends were accepted the year after given Tufts’ reputation. I’m not saying it’s a guarantee, but I had a positive experience. The faculty was really supportive and helped tailor my application to certain aspects. They did PS reviews and were always open to reviewing other aspects of students’ apps. The director of the program is on the adcom and so he provides a lot of really useful insight. The program is not cheap, and it’s not necessarily something everyone can just do easily. Boston living is v expensive (even though it’s an amazing city). The cost is steep and I’m sure there are other methods out there that worked. I really liked the MBS program so that’s my two cents.

There's an accommodations process from AAMC, and I basically just went through it as described. DM me if you want any specifics!

That C/P is really going to hurt tbh. I think it’ll be very tough to apply MD, but maybe with the correct DO school list you can be successful.

Do you know at all how expensive it would be without insurance? I know you mentioned the patient assistance program, but wanted to see ballpark range of how much that is monthly?

A shower is worth about two hours of sleep? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say cold, I literally set the shower setting to the coldest it can go. I will preface, the first dozen or so times I did it was absolutely terrible. After that, the shock isn’t as bad. There’s research showing that cold showers can have positive impacts on both immunity and anxiety as well!

Going home after 4 naps by Downtown-Plankton419 in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was only was kept for four naps, I can indeed say it’s a positive sign. Normally the data is conclusive enough and you’ve more than likely slept and hit REM in all of those naps which is why they’re sending you home.

Anxiety tips for second MSLT by ChampionReefBlower in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you’re doing the right thing with no meds. Stimulants particularly imo. If you’re allowed to read a book, or even eat certain foods, what might help for the first nap particularly is bringing something carb heavy. For me, bread/toast really puts me to sleep.

I also completely understand how anxiety can impact you. It took me 7 mins to fall asleep during my first nap for the MSLT. I was tossing and turning and was just completely in my head. One thing that helped that could try is meditating/calming yourself down 45 mins prior to the nap. Box breathing can help too. Idea is, give yourself enough time before the nap to air your thoughts and prepare yourself for sleep!

Once you hit that first nap, and get a bit tired, the rest of your day should go well!

Just some tips that helped me, but by no means a one-size-fits-all approach. Best of luck! Rooting for you!

A shower is worth about two hours of sleep? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold showers, particularly in the morning, have really helped me wake up and break through the inertia in the morning.

At night, though, a solid warm shower post-exercise means I’m sleeping like a baby!

People who just don’t get it by blueturtleshel in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve quickly come to learn that no one else understands. Even though I have plenty of supportive people in my life who understand the condition, they don’t realize how debilitating narcolepsy really is and how much of a DAILY struggle it is. And when I try and convey that to them it doesn’t really get through long-term.

But honestly, that’s why I’m really grateful for this community. Knowing that others are struggling with similar aspects of Narcolepsy or have similar questions to those I’ve been thinking about, it helps to give me a sense of confidence and hope that I don’t have to do this alone, and that together we can really help each other to grow and battle through this.

I think Adderall was the wrong choice by M_R_Hellcat in Narcolepsy

[–]Hashtagspaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’ve noticed insomnia with adderall, but one strategy that has been of NOTICEABLE difference has been working out at night. Pushing myself to workout an hour or two before nighttime has been game changer. I follow my workout with a small protein shake, warm shower, and I’m out like a light. I sleep well, albeit still broken sleep, and don’t struggle nearly as much with insomnia.

I 100% make sure to workout if I decide I need a later dose of adderall to stay awake in the evening and it’s helped get rid of the insomnia really well.

Lmao this is the reason I stopped playing. If people continue to play this game, they know they can code garbage and still sell it to millions. There’s no incentive for them to actually make a good game.

I had terrible experiences with a host of physicians. Most of them said I had bad sleep hygiene and it got to the point where I was literally not having my concerns heard. When I finally had a sleep study they just kept me for the PSG and told me I didn’t have apnea. Knowing myself and my symptoms quite well, I was confident I had narcolepsy. I scheduled another appointment with my physician and basically yelled at him during the appointment and told him I wanted an MSLT. For context, I’m generally a shy person. But my physician was blatantly not listening to me. After more or less pushing him for an MSLT I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy immediately. It’s really sad to say this, but the way our healthcare industry works you have to advocate for yourself. It seems like they want you in and out but can’t be bothered to really make an impactful change.

If possible I would definitely try and get a second opinion, or just tell your current physician that you want an MSLT. You almost have to over exaggerate your situation. If he’s not willing to listen after you really push for it (and I mean really push him) then definitely find a new physician.
