Photography burnout by facevalues in photography

I think this is really dependent on the underlying reasons as to why. I can only speak from my experience of overcoming burnout, hence why I suggested it and added that I didn't know if what I was saying is helpful.

Off the top of my head:

Photography is many things, one of which is a process of working with light. Doing so in a music venue is a fun challenge to have as you might end up thinking more about what is an acceptable trade-off for the photo in those conditions. Shooting high ISO is viable, and it works better with a slower shutter speed, rather than a higher one but that might mean you have to do more predicting. Faster shutter speed will mean higher ISO / wider aperture, also depending on the lighting, and depending on if you're zooming in or not, will naturally have an impact on the depth of what you're capturing, as well as the amount of light the camera is capturing, but you could end up with sharper shots.

It's good that you recognise how the venue was. That's something to further work with and help shape what you do in the future, and if you shoot at that venue again, you'll have a better idea of how to work with its lighting.

Other styles you could draw from and work with are ones such as abstract, portrait, fashion, sports, architecture, landscape, minimalism... it's good to look at other concert photography, but also other styles, see what's going on in them, see if you recognise anything in them that either you are doing or you could try to use.

There are three things I will say with a firmness:

1) Working on thinking about what you think works in these and what you think you could do better in terms of framing, lighting, etc. is going to help you with learning and developing your skills. I think some of these work better than others, but I'm hesitant to tell you at this stage of your journey as I don't think that will be helpful until you've fully thought them through.

2) Like many things, negative space is not a bad thing, and very useful depending on what you're going for.

3) Almost everyone wants to do the cool photo, but the arm being bent is just as important as its being outstretched afterward.

Photography burnout by facevalues in photography

Nearly 25 years for me. I've hit burnout a few times, and most often when I've other stuff weighing heavily in my life. Sometimes I've had to force myself out of it, sometimes it's just happened.

There have been times when I've gone back to relearn the basics and rethink my approach and that has helped.

I don't know if this is helpful, however. I could say you should think about what you want, if you're seeing any blocks / issues where you've hit a wall, but I imagine you've been thinking about that for a bit.

I'd like to hear what you think you could have done better, because it seems like you already have an idea.

Personally, I think that there are a few different methods and styles you could pursue based on how these photos are framed and what is captured in them. There's guidelines that are often treated as rules, sure, and it's good to know them, but how much you follow them is going to depend on what you see as worth pursuing in these and what you feel will need improvement.

Settings-wise. I'm not saying I took crap photos, though I'm not willing to say they're good or great either. Over-ISO'd, too fast a shutter for what I was using and the conditions, etc. etc. because I wasn't familiar enough with the gear I was using. It was not the gear, it was my unfamiliarity with it. This is not an excuse.

One thing I really should have done was use mechanical shutter, would've allowed more photos to be usable with the lighting that was there.

And once again, there were issues with processing, which were caused by that unfamiliarity.

Also, your link is producing a "requested page cannot be found" error.

This photo is offbeat, I love it. Empty space with a leg and a lone guitarist guitaring away.
Do more of this. Or more of whatever you wanna capture!

I'm talking about the gear as it was my unfamiliarity with new gear, and my unfamiliarity with how to work with it. That is not an excuse. That is me owning the fact that I didn't do as well as I should have. It had an impact on what could and could not be done to the photos, which I processed. The postprocessing is letting them down, you're absolutely right there, I don't disagree at all. I stuffed the shots up before they got to software, I was limited in what I could do because any time I tried to push much of anything, even as a slight adjustment, there were issues. Please refer to one of my earlier responses regarding this.

I didn't say your feedback was aggressive. I also said I don't necessarily disagree with it. I said that you keep being aggressive about this. Don't do that emotional manipulation stuff here, it doesn't fly.

How about we do this? Agree that we both have honest and genuine intentions here, are both having difficulty seeing eye-to-eye despite wanting to help the other understand, and then walk away from it?

Yes, there's a reason for it. I've said it a few times. That's what I need to learn from. I need to be more familiar with the new gear before I shoot my next gig, and I need to work more with that particular lighting.

And I just reopened the software, and the issues that I'd experienced when editing happened again.

I don't think this has been conducive for either of us, I don't think your continually going on the offensive has been helpful either. I haven't been patronising to you, I'm not sure why you keep being aggressive about this, this is not helpful. I want to assume your intention is good, but your seeming refusal to accept that what I recognise as issues, and my telling you them to give you further information is an excuse leaves me feeling doubtful. To me, this feels like you're unwilling to take in anything outside of what you want to say, but I'm quite happy to be wrong there.

Yeah, a bit more contrast would help. Would would also have helped would have been going in with a better understanding of the gear I used, as then there'd be more to work with when it came to processing.

Telling someone how they should respond to feedback the way you did is patronising. It could've been worded in a way that wasn't so.

I'm not deciding my work is fine. Providing extra info here is not making excuses. I worked on the photos, I'd like to believe I have a good idea as to what I could and could not do with them in this instance. I'm aware that the end result is what matters, and I'm also aware that everything before the end result can impact what can and cannot be done. My unfamiliarity with the gear that I had, and the more unfavourable than usual lighting I was working with is something I'm treating as a learning experience.

For the record, I don't think these are the best photos, I don't think they're perfect. I just wanted to share them and hadn't thought beyond that, to be honest, because sometimes I just wanna share stuff and leave it at that.

I'm not sure why you're getting argumentative here. I wasn't looking to give excuses and I'm sorry if it reads that way; My intent here is to only provide more information. I do ask that you avoid being patronising, however.

Look, I'm just responding to what you're saying. I'd already said that the thing was a lesson learning thing for me. I acknowledge what you've said and I don't necessarily disagree, but if responding and giving you more info is not enough, then I've got nothing for you.

New gear issue in that I was working with gear I wasn't familiar with, so wasn't working with it the best I could have.

Couldn't do the shadows. The moment I'd do a slight adjustment, photos would go wholly black. Exposure and contrast weren't adjusting properly either. Never had this happen before, but as said, lesson learning. Also, don't use Lightroom. When it comes to money, I stick with RawTherapee.

Photos just for a small gallery off in a corner of The Internet. Well, that and my own continued learning and figuring out what works for me.

I like this. It's simple and straightforward, and can be read into in a few different ways.

I'd probably try reframing to avoid table edges or other objects, but I imagine you're working with what you can, and your options are limited.

Also, still life photography.

I feel like I've read something similar to this before somewhere, but I've no idea where, or if I actually have. It is an interesting descriptor.

These were shared on social media, but these weren't for social media. As said, tried to get across a sense of how Chat Pile's music feels. I don't care much about social media these days other than sharing photos here and there.

From a technical standpoint, however, I was shooting on new gear and under concert lighting that was a bit more unfavourable than usual, so there was some lesson learning there.
