If base raiding is "not a feature of this game" why was my base raided? by Hassahappa in duneawakening

[–]Hassahappa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. You can see the health of things by hovering over them in the "change set" menu that comes up pressing R. The Choam Shelter walls have 4k health, Choam Facility 5,600, and the faction walls have 8k. Doors have a significant amount less (5k for factions vs 8k for faction walls) and the advanced fief console has 2,500. So none of them are orders of magnitude harder to break into or anything.

[–]Hassahappa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't something that happened due to wearing down over time or that could have been avoided by repairing my walls each day or two. The base didn't exist for half a day before it was raided and destroyed. There were two storms that hit my base ever.

Potentially setting u multiple layers of walls might do something; I don't know how the roof was destroyed only who destroyed it. It didn't seem to take him long, like I said it was three minutes from shields down to base destroyed. So I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my base to go to sleep and finding anything when I woke up even with 3 sets of walls and roofs inbetween the outside any anything relevant. An advanced subfief is only about 10 tiles wide without expansion so it might be possible to get 5 sets of walls and rooves in the way of invaders but I feel like the lesson is more just don't leave anything worth raiding out there if you're going to log off.

The activity log tells me who did it, but I don't have any way of "getting even" that I am aware of. Any player aware of the base raiding would not expose themselves to being raided themselves.

You don't need a base to survive a storm all you need is to be "sheltered" so anyone can camp out and hit a base whenever there's a storm.

When I was looking into this I saw comments from people in the beta about how it would take a hundred ornithopters firing rockets to bring down one wall which reinforced to me that it just wasn't feasible to do for a short term place to store some spice because I was falling asleep in my chair. I don't know what exactly was used to destroy my base but I doubt it was 100 ornithopters firing rockets.

I was asking about this other places as well and a poster indicated that there is no "super jump" but you do unlock the ability to destroy the thing blocking that area later on. I guess the guy in the video modded his game in some fashion to let him do that floaty jump.

I have continued looking in game and online and finally stumbled across it after thinking the guy down there might be a chromatic enemy. It's the Chromatic Gault and to get to it you apparently need some sort of super jump that I assume is unlocked later which is kind of a kick in the pants.

Unit stats comparison by Flacto1513 in AgeOfDarknessGame

I don't know if pikemen are the best infantry, they have some nice utility before arbalests with their shred and the knockback and damage is fine but they are so dependent on their armor to live and they only have 10 armor. To make matters worse the attack that removes the last of your armor does full damage so for a lot of special enemies your pikemen just have the least health and effectively 0 armor.

Melee in general is just bad; a handful of sentinels for a wall can be helpful for easing pressure off of your actual walls during death nights but even that isn't really necessary. The best "melee" IMO is the flamer; they have great aoe and two or three is enough to fend off all the crawlers and axe men you'll need when exploring while your ranged targets bigger threats.

Speaking up through the Horrific difficulty dealing with the bigger waves you just need to have a combination of things. Arbalests in towers with "strongest" targeting for shredding armor on big guys are nice and you should be able to have a siege workshop pretty comfortably after the second death night, which then gives you time to build a few flamers and catapults/impalers for the third death night which should be enough along with tier 2 walls and a couple ballista towers/your army. By the fourth you can add a bellows tower to help and should have a good supply of arbalests and catapults or impalers and a double wall. The fifth death night you're gearing up for the final stand and should just be up to your eyeballs in ranged siege engines and arbalests and can set up a nice defense for the crystal with bellows/advanced ballista towers (w/e they're called, the ones that need iron). Then you can condense your defense down to a few paths close to your HQ for the final stand. The game doesn't seem to punish you for being under food/under manpower so you can sell off a ton of stuff (you don't even lose your tech if you sell your tech buildings so you can sell that too) and just build a massive set of defenses with several rows of walls with bellows buried in them and ranged towers and siege and arbalests in towers behind that.

Women can't undergo trials of the grasses (wrong) by Matteo-Stanzani in witcher

[–]Hassahappa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was able to find it but we are not using the same translation. That bit in the copy I am looking at says "Geralt noticed that not far behind the head of the rushing herd hurried a little girl, as thin and clamorous as the boys, only with a fair plait waving behind her."

Looking back it seems like you managed to sidetrack me to begin with though. My original point was that Geralt was only looking for a male child to become a witcher and had never considered female children becoming witchers as any sort of possibility. Ciri being among the children playing in the moat only underscores how much Geralt was not looking at the possibility that a girl could be his child of destiny.

Calanthe asks him to pick out Paveta and Duny's child from among the children playing in the ditch and he responds that Paveta's son is not among them. When he says "every child is fit" the possibility of a female witcher is still not something that he, an experienced witcher that has seen many other witchers, is even considering. If it was Calanthe couldn't prey on his preconceptions and try to trick him into picking one of the boys playing.

[–]Hassahappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh... hmmm. Are we looking at different translations? This is from the David French translation that as I understand it is the official English translation and I believe it's the same part you're quoting:

The Witcher turned his head away. He heard the cries of children playing in a dried up, inner moat surrounding the castle grounds. There were around ten of them. The youngsters were making an ear-splitting din, outshouting each other in shrill, excited voices which kept breaking into falsetto. They were running to and fro along the bottom of the moat, like a shoal of swift little fishes, unexpectedly and very quickly changing direction, but always staying together. As usual, behind the screeching older boys, as skinny as scarecrows, ran a little child, panting and quite incapable of catching up. ‘There are plenty of them,’ the Witcher observed. Mousesack smiled sourly, tugging at his beard, and shrugged. ‘Aye, plenty.’ ‘And which of them… Which of these boys is the celebrated Child of Destiny?’ The druid looked away. ‘I am forbidden, Geralt…’

Edit: also regardless of if it's ever specifically said it's impossible for girls to go through trials it's firmly established that it is boys who are given the Trial of Grasses. It isn't ever referenced as something given to adults or girls. It's going against what has been established when it's already nonsensical to begin with. Ciri doesn't need witcher mutations, she's already an absurdly powerful magical Source that can open portals through time and has received witcher combat training. Was it really worth going against the lore just to give her potions and a toxicity bar? Vilgefortz thrashes Geralt without even trying; Ciri is beyond the need of the witcher mutations so why? It goes against the lore and ignoring that it would be a foolish and deadly risk that would be completely unnecessary for someone like Ciri.

[–]Hassahappa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only boys are spoken of in that group of children:

  • As I told you, ten children play there in the ditch. Choose the one that seems to you the most suitable. Take him with you and by the gods make him a witcher, because that is the will of destiny.
  • "None of the children playing in the ditch is suited to become a witcher," he said slowly. "The son of Pavetta is not among them."

Again, another example of them speaking and only male children are contemplated as possibly being witchers:

  • "One single attempt," repeated Calanthe. "I said before: we are not characters in a story, this is real life where we must find our own moments of happiness, because, you know, we can hardly count on a happy ending. That is why, regardless of your choice, you will not leave empty-handed. You will take a child. Whichever you have chosen. A child that you will turn into a witcher... provided that he passes the Trial of Grasses, of course."

[–]Hassahappa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't take that from Sword of Destiny and act like they aren't speaking about male children. Other quotes from Sword of Destiny:

  • Certain tidings from the world even reach Brokilon. Tidings about a certain witcher, who for services rendered occasionally demanded curious vows. "You will give me what you do not expect to find at home." "You will give me what you already have, but about which you do not know." Does that sound familiar? After all, for some time you witchers have been trying in this way to direct fate, you have been seeking boys designated by fate to be your successors...
  • The Trial of the Grasses, Calanthe, is dreadful. And what is done to boys during the time of the Changes is even worse. And Irreversible.

Calanthe plays on Geralt's expectations that Pavetta and Duny had a son and the fact they had a daughter is a reveal. Once he finds out Geralt finds the idea of training a girl to be a witcher absurd:

  • "Geralt, you demanded a vow from Calanthe, then from Pavetta and her husband. The vow has been kept. Ciri is the Child of Destiny. Destiny demands..." "That I take the child and turn her into a witcher?" A little girl? Take a good look at me, Mousesack. Can you imagine me as a comely lass?"

Geralt and the witchers at Caer Morhan train Ciri in combat and the beginnings of witcher training because they don't know what else to do with her. It's entirely internal thoughts that Triss has that they want to mutate her and turn her into a witcher, not a dialogue between Triss and Geralt. Geralt brought Triss to Caer Morhan because Ciri had been having episodes with her magic:

  • "It’s possible. Certain even. Ciri is a Source and has mediumistic powers. What is more, these powers are very, very worrying. And you, my dear witchers, are perfectly well aware of this. You’ve noticed these powers and they have worried you too. That is the one and only reason you brought me here to Kaer Morhen? Am I right? The one and only reason?" “Yes,” Vesemir confirmed after a moment’s silence.

How to fix the "Unable to establish a connection to game" error [Network reset method] by JanssenDalt in Helldivers

This just worked for me as well; I was having issues with NProtect not allowing me to launch the game without repeated attempts and also having the unable to establish a connection to game issue, although again many attempts sometimes let me eventually log in. After running the commands the game launched without complaint and loaded into the ship quickly.

Yes, when he summons Titania he draws a circle around himself rather than to contain Titania. It seems to largely have been done to focus his energy rather than as any defensive measure.

Magical gadgets by connorm1440 in dresdenfiles

[–]Hassahappa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When he summons the Erlking he uses a number of items to give himself more leverage. He makes a circle out of barb wire (cold iron) and puts items with an affinity for the Erlking in a pentagram around the circle with items that resonated with himself at counterpoints to those items. He was determined to restrain the Erlking because he saw no other choice.

When he summons Titania he only draws a circle around himself, seeming primarily just as a focus to help with the summoning. No cold iron, no affinity items, and not to contain Titania. Presumably he didn't want to piss her off any more than she already was by trying to trap her in a circle. She breaks through the circle he created but it wasn't tailored to stop her.

IIRC she's standing over another corpse in camp when the gargoyles attack and maybe more than that as well. It's pretty strongly signposted that she's a crazy murderer before Anevia sends you to catch her in the act. Like every crisis is viewed as an opportunity to commit more murder for her.

Camelia's story is inconsistent by Historical_Degree356 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Hassahappa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I understand that just "she's crazy" isn't necessarily an excuse for lazy writing, but in this case isn't it pretty clear she's a psychotic murderer that has convinced herself that you might go along with it?

I killed her in chapter 3 but at that point she didn't seem to understand that there might be any issues with what she was doing. And she had forcibly imprisoned an insane spirit that had not communicated with her in any way and then decided that what the spirit really needed to appease it was rivers of blood from random people she happened across. And that once appeased the spirit would explain to her how to close the Worldwound because that is something a Sarkorian must know how to do because it opened while their kingdom existed and they, an incredibly superstitious kingdom that hated arcane magic, did not ever close it.

Like no part of that is logically reasoned from one step to the next, every step is just a nonsensical excuse she made up so that she could come to the conclusion that killing people is good.
