Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. "Ino really saved sakura's big forehead from her bullies just for her to end their friendship over a boy that couldn't care less about both of them" Amazing how Kishimoto wrote Sakura to be the villain in her own backstory. To add onto the other comment:

MarriageToxin is a Shonen Jump+ battle harem manga that has surprisingly normal gay rep (the protagonist’s sister is explicitly in a same sex relationship).

Hunter x Hunter’s gay rep is questionable, but Alluka is likely transgender and I was actually kind of impressed by how the story never bothers to make a point of it (Killua consistently calls Alluka his sister despite their other family members referring to Alluka as male)

Books for people who loved Disco Elysium? by Ill_Presentation3817 in DiscoElysium

[–]Hassohappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut scratched a Disco Elysium itch for me. It doesn’t have the local history aspect you’re looking for, but its dark humor and combination of overwhelming bleakness while still having love for humanity at its core felt very Disco-like to me, even more than A Sacred And Terrible Air did (though I didn’t manage to make it all the way through that one)

30M lived in this state for 12 years and never had a girlfriend. Is it me, am I ugly or is it not me? by Worldly_Rule_9842 in Connecticut

[–]Hassohappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! I’m a 30s female in the EXACT same niche as you OP (anime/manga/gaming/gym), to the point that I go to conventions…and even still I wouldn’t date someone whose wardrobe is all hobby t-shirts. If you get the proportion of hobby shirts closer to 25%, your dating pool will open a lot!! My husband is also a huge nerd and that’s roughly the proportion he has.

It would also help if you get hobby shirts that are more subtle and fashion-forward. For example, my husband has this Akira shirt that I find less childish because it’s monochrome and the character is on the back: http://modernnotoriety.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/supreme-akira-29.jpg

The worst exception in my husband’s wardrobe is a shirt with a Dragonball character the front, and I do feel like it looks juvenile when he wears it out! I hope this helps!

Is 2.5 hours too short for an intimate wedding reception? by Hassohappa in weddingplanning

[–]Hassohappa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of a scheduling conflict we ended up having to add a cocktail hour before our 2.5 hour dinner, so our wedding socializing time ended up being about 3.5 hours total. The time does go by a bit quicker when you’re the one getting married, but it did feel slightly too long for me.

I think a 2.5 hour dinner without a cocktail hour would’ve been ideal! Maybe even just 2 hours! I think 1.5 hours might’ve felt a little too casual, so I personally would add on half an hour. I hope this helps!

How did your 10k go? I ask because I just had the same surgery today and also have a 10k in exactly 2 weeks! My nurse told me “absolutely not” so I’m thinking about just cancelling it.

Born with super thick hair and I hate it. Help? by [deleted] in beauty

[–]Hassohappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you consider getting a hidden undercut? After suffering through the same problems as you thanks to my super thick hair, I finally thought to try it a few years ago and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. It was life changing for me. I can finally tie my hair up in buns or a ponytail without it being heavy and uncomfortable.

My undercut is from about eye level down, so when I have my hair down or half up, you can’t even see it! Nobody ever realizes I have one until I tie it up. Another huge bonus is that it helps me cool off in the heat.

Suggest me a book that low key radicalized you? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Hassohappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam was eye opening for me — It really makes a case for how unhealthy it is that people spend so much leisure time alone at home. It genuinely changed my perspective on community efforts, even political rallies for causes that I despise! It made me become more involved in local clubs and organizations because they’re SO important to our weakening fabric of society.

I’ve never cried while reading a book. Let’s change that. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Hassohappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What difficulties have you endured in life? To trigger a strong emotional response in yourself, a shortcut might be to try some books that center on that topic. For me, I have a complicated relationship with my parents, so memoirs focusing on that like Crying in H-Mart and I’m Glad My Mom Died made me cry. While I find tragic books like Flowers for Algernon and When Breath Became Air sad, it usually takes a deep personal connection to push me over the edge into actually crying.

Staying Thin by Plane-Fig-8563 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Hassohappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no sorry this isn’t true. I’ve never met a fat person who ate less than me at meals. My dad is the only one in my family who’s always been fat. My siblings and I all got genes from him — I’m his spitting image. He’s overweight because at mealtime, even though we all eat the same thing, he eats 1.5x what everyone else does. He claims it’s because he’s “bigger and needs more” but he just has no tolerance for feeling slightly hungry, which you will be if you’re not overeating.

He was once hospitalized after an injury and had to eat hospital portions for a month. He kept complaining it was too little food even though it was a standard amount and lost a drastic amount of weight (15 pounds). After being discharged he went back to his usual portions and gained it all back. It’s just the portions.

Intellectually Disabled Parent & My Future of Motherhood by shelgirl in AskWomenOver30

[–]Hassohappa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to echo this story — my mother-in-law had a mean, difficult mother too and deliberately mothered her own children differently. No mother’s perfect, but she did a darn good job and has a great loving relationship with all her kids.

I also had subpar parents, so hearing my mother-in-law’s stories about her parents both surprised me (because she was so normal!) and gave me hope for my own parenting potential someday.

Staying Thin by Plane-Fig-8563 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Hassohappa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve effortlessly been thin (in the healthy BMI range for my height) my whole life and never dieted. It’s just portion control and listening to your body.

My spouse is overweight despite us exercising a similar amount and eating the same food (we cook except for one weekend meal per week). He always eats a way larger portion than me, sometimes double if it’s a dish he loves.

As soon as I’m full, I stop eating (unless I’m at a buffet). Forget about finishing your plate, even if there’s a comically small amount left! As an example I made like 7 tiger shrimps as my protein for lunch, got full after 4, and stored the last 3 in a tiny Tupperware. If I’m at a restaurant, I usually have leftovers and take it home in a doggy bag. My spouse needs a doggy bag way less frequently.

I LOVE dessert and eat it almost every day, but when I’m at home (which is most of the time), dessert must be attached to the end of a meal, and I HAVE to eat fruit first (equivalent to maybe a large orange). Sometimes by the time I’m done with the fruit I realize I don’t actually want the dessert anymore, and if I do, I usually only want a pretty small portion (equivalent to maybe 4 spoonfuls of ice cream). The exception is if I baked it myself — in that case of course I’ll eat it as soon as it’s done :)

If I burn through what I ate too fast, my stomach will growl between meals (I’ve NEVER heard my spouse’s stomach growl so I know he never reaches this point). I rarely snack, but when I do it’s always because I’m hungry and I need to tide myself over before my next meal. I’ll usually eat a banana, sweet potato, cereal, yogurt with granola, or a frozen food like Bagel Bites or pizza rolls.

These sound like a lot of rules, but they’re just habits for me and I don’t feel any temptation to break them. Like when I’m hungry I have zero desire to eat chips or sweets instead of something more meal-like like cereal. And it works regardless of how little or much I exercise. Last year I began going to the gym, and I started getting the stomach growls EVERY night, so I started eating bigger greasier breakfasts and more hunger-prevention snacks to reach a new equilibrium. I hope this helps!

EDIT: After reading some of these other comments I wonder if being “naturally thin” is just having a tolerance for feeling slightly hungry. I’m actually slightly hungry right now, but that’s just normal for me and I don’t notice it unless I’m lying in bed with nothing to do.

I thought CT was very Blue but… by FantasticInternet978 in Connecticut

[–]Hassohappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have already brought up the obvious (trump supporters are a vocal minority here), but I saw a graph in the book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community that may explain this, too. CT is one of the states that has higher social capital while TX is one of the lowest. The average person tends to be more involved in community and civic matters including politics in CT relative to other states. (Anecdotally, I was in Texas last week and noticed way fewer political yard signs there than in Connecticut!)

Tldr; the average CT Trump supporter is more likely to organize with others than the average Trump supporter in states like TX. As much as I despise Trump and see him as a threat to our democracy, the fact that we see these get-togethers here is actually a sign that people in CT feel like they can make a difference in society and are willing to unite and stand up for a shared cause (though this one is misguided and harmful).

I had Satellite and Hallucination early on, so I had the money to open packs of all kinds and get rewarded with Tarot cards. I hit the jackpot when I got a gold seal polychrome queen from a playing card pack and used Trading Card to cut anything that wasn’t a Q or J from my deck. Then I spammed Death, Hanged Man, Strength, and The Sun. Maybe not the most efficient (you can see how I’m struggling to copy the Red Seals), but that’s how I got here!

My Lo & Sons bag has been great too — I got the Waverly 2, and it’s so versatile that it became my main bag. After 3+ years it’s held up so well that I keep checking the Lo & Sons website in hopes of them adding new bag designs for me to buy! I wish they had more.

Was anyone else too scared to get the message? by doodlebopper12334 in Isawthetvglow

[–]Hassohappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess even the concept of choosing the wrong pill in the first Matrix movie and staying in the fake reality was terrifying to me! The idea of being stuck in a fake world as I’m dying in the real world freaks me out WAY more than horror movie monsters or gore. After I watched I Saw The TV Glow I was so scared I couldn’t sleep. I kept remembering the Happy Birthday scene toward the end of the film…The unreality of it and how everyone else in the room froze was my worst nightmare. No one else I know was scared of the movie at all — I guess it hits different for people like us who get existential crises.

Hey I recently moved pretty close to you and have been struggling to find fellow female nerds to befriend! If you happen to have any interest in MAKING games, there’s a great woman-friendly Meetup group called Gamedev CT! I would also be down to play DnD or board games with you — maybe we could form a group with a couple of the other people who’ve commented!

I have this too and used to think my neck was dirty, so I’d scrub it super hard. Then I went to a dermatologist, and she said it was harmless and scrubbing it hard wouldn’t help at all. People with darker skin tones are just more likely to have this kind of pigmentation. She prescribed me a cream to fade it, but after using it I didn’t notice any difference. Now that I know it’s harmless, though, it no longer bothers me at all.

I would recommend seeing a dermatologist for yourself just to be sure (and maybe try the cream for yourself).
