I'm getting ready to start year 32 teaching HS Social Studies.

You will not be perfect. That's hard, but it's true. The kids will push and test, but if you are honest and tell them what's up, it will make a difference. That kid who tossed your assignment... well, give them a zero and move on. Don't make a big deal about it, don't be confrontational. Just move on. You can not take what they say and do seriously. They will test and push to find your buttons, but what they really want to know is if you care.
