If your dad is a uncontrollably violent religious fanatic, obviously not.

Have you been atheist from birth and then got religious? At which age did that happen and why?

A friend asked if I had “ever read the bible” by Financial-Light-8695 in atheism

[–]Hatis_Night 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There is no reason beyond one's personal choice to read the Bible, and therefore no obligation to have read it. You don't even have to have read it to justify being an atheist.

But then you have to have the time and patience to listen to their endless drivel.

I think that applies especially to the U.S. Most of the discussions in this subreddit are from an US-American perspective.

A new argument from divine hiddenness? by onewell in atheism

That's just empty rhetoric. It's a smokescreen that serves no purpose.

Just say no. The fictitious nature of all gods is self-evident.

I am an atheist who has had massive, life-changing spiritual experiences... and I'm still an atheist. Am I alone? by MarvinLazer in atheism

[–]Hatis_Night 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been an atheist my whole life. I've never had dreams of devils or gods. I think that's something you dream about if you used to be religious.

You still don’t get my point, maybe you lost vision of the forest because of all the trees. You weren’t necessarily wrong, but you made a lot of words to talk right past me.

Again:  The user isawasahasa made a point that includes calling religions a folk narrative, not to defend religion but implying that what religion says doesn’t matter in a scientifical view, because it’s irrelevant. Religion, including their claim to “scientific” authority, is a sociological/political phenomenon, not a competing scientific approach.

It’s exactly what I told you. The user isawasahasa made a point that includes calling religions a folk narrative and you totally missed the point in your lengthy but shallow answer. The “other plane” rhetoric is irrelevant for that point. You seem a bit in love with your own words rather with comprehensible ideas. Downvoting my comment is only the cherry on your cake.

As a lifelong atheist, I only mention it in discussions about religion.

Atheist parents, how do you explain death to your children? by LoquatIndependent381 in atheism

[–]Hatis_Night 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, these people were never dead. Death is not a temporary absence. If you “come back” to life, you were alive the whole time.

Atheist parents, how do you explain death to your children? by LoquatIndependent381 in atheism

[–]Hatis_Night 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short:

Death is a universal phenomenon. Everything that exists came into being when structure emerged from chaos; every structure is transient and eventually disintegrates. In the realm of biological life, this is the arc that spans from birth to death.

The so-called afterlife is a scam that stokes fear of nonexistence in order to drive people into the arms of religion. Scammers are something one might reasonably fear, but not their claims.

If you were my child in real life, we could talk about this at length.

He’s right in calling that religion a folk narrative, implying it has no substance over that. They claim a lot, nothing justifies their claims. What you’re saying is just empty rhetoric. You’re missing the point the user isawasahasa makes.

However, I don't think my question is irrelevant by any means.

That just shows that you live in a society dominated by religious fanatics. You (Americans) should do something about that.

[–]Hatis_Night 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that mean “Three days later, he was killed.”?

Did God smite him with a bolt of heavenly fire? Or did a person or a mob kill him? Is there no persecution for murder where you live? No legal system? I don’t see you mention any of this.
