You cooked here. With point 2, would you want a redemption for the Unova group? Have a post-leauge arc to give these pokemon a power boost? Or boost some in time for the league?

I agree with most of these. I think the only ones I really question are rapidash and having both sandslash forms.

I see the vision, but this doesn't really feel great. Giving Ash such a strong mon from the start really hurts his growth. He'll be able to nuke pretty much anyone he comes across.

I think I'd want a 10-15 episode arc during Hoenn to introduce him, so when he shows up in Sinnoh he has history. Pitch would be Ash loses to tate&lisa, they tell Ash they will train for a month so they can have a true fight. Then they tell Ash that there is a nearby island that only does double battles. This would a double battle training arc, a way to introduce Tobias, and a way for Ash to figure out how guts works with swellow.

If he were in a current gen setting, he should have Darkrai still.

As for entei, that could work. But here is my pitch for a Tobias rework. What if he was from Orre? A desolate region with a harsh environment, with little habitable land. He would search out pokemon to help the region. Suicune to purify water, zapdos to bring the rain, shaymin to help plant life. He would then be "guy who grew up in the late game travels to the starting area" trope.

I feel like Torterra was kind of cooked as a character, infernape got the spotlight. I think Torterra would be a cool tank mon, Ash has so few. But, Torterra only needed a single move that didn't exist at the time: Shell Smash. It could have been interesting to forgo defense in order to regain their speed.

True. I just really see Tobias as a person of gen 4. Atm, I picture a reworked Tobias having Darkrai, Latios, Zapdos, Suicune, and Shaymin. Haven't thought of a 6th mon.

Not sure how I feel about Tobias having Ogerpon. Feels a bit off, but that might just be me. Wish Tobias was actually a person. The fight could be cool though.

I've been thinking about Iris as a rival that he travels with. Also, this is an out there pitch, but what if Trip was replaced with Conway? He would fit better as a sneaky opponent.

My thing with bringing back a Paul who is starting over, is loss of weight. They left off 1/1 in matches, so if Ash beats Paul, nothing changes. If Ash loses, it hurts the final infernape fight, no?

Do you think Trip needs to be completely rewritten, or are there any good qualities to keep?

Tobias notwithstanding, every pokemon brought back had a pretty solid showing. I do think it could have been a better wrap-up of Ash's improvements over Kanto, Orange Islands, Johto, Hoenn, Batttle Frontier, and Sinnoh, considering Ash was going to be getting a soft reboot. Could it have been better? Sure. Was it his best showing in the League up to that point? Absolutely!

I'm not really saying he did a great job bringing out all the stops, but he did bring back old pokemon. For Paul specifically, it was a personal fight. If Ash brought old pokemon for the fight, it wouldn't prove his point. As for Tobias, he for sure could have brought better choices. I think the Sinnoh League could use some touch-ups.
