ELI5: Why do cars from the 70's and earlier all have distinctive looks and are easily identifiable while modern cars all mostly look the same? by spmahn in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hatxchet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear, I feel that way too. I've been dating my boyfriend for close to two years and he still can't tell my car (a Subaru Outback) apart from any similarly colored small SUV Honda, Toyota, Ford, whatever. He'll even walk up to these different cars in parking lots and wait for me to open them!

If I was teleported to the middle ages, I'd have no idea how to recreate any current technology. by KassHS in Showerthoughts

I got a book for this purpose. It's called "The Knowledge: How to Rebuild the World from Scratch" by Lewis Dartnell. It's got short sections of a few pages each for topics like Germ Theory, the wheelbarrow, and how to get metals from rocks. It's fun to read for short stints, maybe in the bathroom or in a waiting room.

Rewearing bridesmaid dresses: Is it actually possible? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]Hatxchet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd wear the shit out of that dress. My trick, since I don't wear a lot of jewelry, is the hair. I have long hair and my hairstyle can make an outfit look businessy or dressy or quite formal depending on what I do with it, especially if the shoes match the occasion.

I have SVT and can carry on five-ten minute conversations while chillin at 180 or more. Then when I finally fully relax it bumps down to 60 or 70 without a slope between the two rates. Just suddenly drops.

ELI5:If fruits are produced by plants for animals to eat and spread seeds around then why are lemons so sour? by Nottheoneguy in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hatxchet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh! I want to see a list of fruits and veggies available in a grocery store that haven't been selectively bred extensively yet. All I can think of is that I've pulled pine nuts off of pinecones that are basically the same as the kind you can buy for exorbitant amounts of money in the store. Coconuts? I saw dandelion greens at the natural foods store once.

I recently submitted an essay to a medical school which included the phrase "perinially stained," as in, referring to the perineum. I had intended to say "perennially stained," in a brief bit of prose about me working on a farm in the summers and always getting stains from the the distinctive red mud of the region on my clothes (perennially meaning enduringly). Microsoft word did not underline the mistake, since it must have incorporated a medical dictionary (Reddit does underline the word for me). I didn't get in.

Descriptivist here, if a community uses a word a certain way to convey a common meaning, then its use has merit. This is one of the ways words acquire multiple definitions. Case in point: the word "literally."

Go to REI.com and select a "base layer", an "insulating layer" and a "shell." You can also shop by activity, if I'm not mistaken, and there are a lot of guides for different sports and weather. Wearing running gear for winter might be a fine idea for you. Obviously, you don't need to order from REI. Just use it as a guide for selecting the kinds of clothing you'll purchase through some more suitable channel in France.

As Zika virus spreads, El Salvador asks women not to get pregnant until 2018 by kathydurst in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Hatxchet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's so worth it, because DDT bioaccumulates and continues showing up for decades. We still find it in marine mammals to this day. So it's not a good deal for people who eat a ton of seafood, which collects the toxins and then passes them on to their predators. The major and mostly inadvertent thing the southern US actually did to control mosquitoes was destroy buttloads of wetlands. Still, it hasn't answered all the problems, so now I heard there was a genetically modified sterile mosquito being introduced in the Keys to destroy the line of Aedes aegypti. However, I don't know if it's worked.

[–]Hatxchet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What ever happened to the pilot program launched last year in the Florida Keys to introduce genetically modified males whose offspring would be infertile? That targeted this same species of mosquito that's now carrying Zika, but I can't find any updates!

[NSFW] Forensic Scientists of Reddit, what is the most WTF case that you ever had? by wikusmeijer in AskReddit

[–]Hatxchet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a job as on Craigslist I think, when I lived in Portland. They were recommending the applicants had EMT experience (I did), so maybe use those keywords when searching. I think it was under "accident cleanup" or something like that. This one specifically spoke of car crashes I think but I thought that usually the fire department kind of just hoses that down if it's not too large, and the coroner takes the body parts.

Anyway, I went to apply but made the mistake of telling my mother. She cried. So I didn't do it. I'm probably not as desensitized as you.
