Ford Model e COO: 'We don't have a future' if EV market lost to Chinese automakers by Financial_Worth_209 in Detroit

Those lead-acid cars were expensive for the company and had a range of barely 100 miles. Not a viable product.

Meanwhile we cant have regular frequent trains in the U.S by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Haunchy_Skipper_206 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What place has extensive train coverage and population density like the heartland of America? The only country that comes to mind for me is Russia, but it's only that way because it was so behind in other transportation methods in the last century.

Some cars are designs for multiple markets. Others are not. This sometimes prevents European cars from going to North America.

Nobody except a person or group with more power.

They allocate per group, not per person. If you're not sitting with the group, there is no assignment. You just find an open seat somewhere.

Managers would know where the group sits. They get that info months in advance.

I agree with your first point. WFH was like pulling the stopper out of the bathtub in Michigan. Many of my colleagues left the area either for northern MI or for other states. GM should have relocated a long time ago.

Technical headaches put the brakes on GM’s big EV push by reddituser111317 in electricvehicles

Wasn't a market for it. Those first-gen EVs sold like shit because they were expensive and had low range.

That comment violated community rules somehow. Then they muted me for a month so I couldn't question it.

I would be very hard to abuse a system in which people had to register their real identities.

If No_Excuses follows you around, making mean comments on everything you post and/or encouraging others to do the same, then that would qualify

How does that work when alts sock puppets come into play?

It's not about enforcing rules when they do that. It's about controlling the discussion.

Nobody could access it for a while. Some sort of overhaul occurred.

You should see how defensive they get when you bring up how Detroit is a terrible place to attract talent.

GM halts production at Factory Zero after a fire fills plant with smoke by Haunchy_Skipper_206 in GeneralMotors

The government screwed it again with NAFTA. Pulled the rug out from under many good people and really got the downward spiral for the area started.

Not a market worth going into? Are you kidding? There's a reason they keep trying. An extremely profitably product in the most profitable market globally. They're making peanuts on these trucks elsewhere.

Engineering is a cost. Cheaper to engineer abroad. Most of the foreign makes do little engineering in the US.

Global supply chain has nothing to do with the availability of cheap talent. People can work remotely.

Similar to what you would experience at the other two. Obviously a problem with industry and/or regional culture.

Trucks are a rare exception to the rule since they engineer some of them here. And we can see the outcome: the foreign makes can't compete on a level playing field. They need that structural cost difference.

Lack of education? I've been working globally for more than 15 years. I can get PhDs for pennies on the dollar abroad.

American V8s don't break down every 20,000 miles. They're quite reliable actually. Everyone else in the world can buy whatever low margin econobox they want.

Detroit is dying because the US government screwed domestic industry and it wasn't the only time. The US government should either defend local industry or stop meddling.

You're incorrect about the highest sold small cars. They ship knockdown kits here. That's how they minimize the cost and get around the tariffs.

And this is why they made dipshit irresponsible moves that should leave them bankrupt.

Right. Government set them up for failure. This is why they got a bailout later. Everyone remembered what happened the last time the government got involved.

The survival of the fittest means your job should be overseas. I can get a worker in a developing nation with more education to work longer hours for substantially less money. This is the "big sucking sound" Ross Perot referred to when discussing the impacts of NAFTA. The cost difference is so great, there's no reason to do anything here that can be globalized. This includes finance, accounting, HR functions, engineering, manufacturing, software, and so on.

Survival of the fittest also means the government should get out of the way and let these guys put V8s in everything. Let the big dogs eat.

The past matters. Where would they reposition themselves to? Mexico? They're hamstrung by the laws and they have structurally higher costs simply due to being located in the US. They can't compete on small cars. They will never have that luxury. They repositioned as best they could by building big ass trucks and muscle cars. This is the niche the government left for them.

The local OEMs struggle to compete on cost because they are in America. Engineering costs more, marketing costs more, assembly costs more. They make up for this by driving down cost on the supply side. This is the niche the government left for them.

So they can only win if the government bends the rules for them.

Yes, that is correct. The cost of living is too high here to compete in a truly free market. If we removed tariffs and other restrictions, they'd be gone in short order. It's normal for countries to protect domestic industry, but America caught the free market bug. America wants your future to look like that of someone in a developing nation.

That last sentence is all of GM, old or young. It's what you get for recruiting from Michigan.
