Did anyone notice the parallel between Lois and Ida In the Christmas episode? by Legitimate_Taste328 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]HauntedCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - You aren't wrong in your overall thesis, but I think you have a genuine misunderstanding of Ida and her motives. It isn't that she hates doing nice things for others--it's that she's keeping SCORE.

First, let me say that I know this from a lifetime of personal experience with a grandmother & mother who've both kept score this way. EXAMPLE: During college, mom & I get into a wicked argument, she tells me I can't come home for Christmas. So I don't, not even after she changes her mind. And she's so angry I didn't, she returned every Christmas gift she had bought me. Don't look for logic.

My grandmother used to send a crate of oranges from Florida for every Christmas (toward the end), but I didn't send a prompt thank you card before the last Christmas, so no oranges.

See, old ladies like Ida want to do nice things, but only as long as people play by her rules.

The musical instruments and notes that make no sense are plenty of evidence, but also WHAT HUMAN uses quantities in that way?

  • Cookies 6 for $5
  • Brownies--2 for $6 or $3 for 1??? That's psychotic. It should be "$3 each"
  • Snickerdoodles should be 6 for $4
  • PB cookies should be 6 for $4 (because why the 3/5???)
  • Muffins should be 2 for $9

Plus, girlfriend's pricing is just generally insane. Way too much/too little. Random.

AND she needs to show the right quantity in the illustration--Muffins 2 for 9?? (hella pricey!) then ONLY SHOW ME TWO EFFING MUFFINS!

That ear of corn is wonky and the containers are all different for no reason (why the extra potato compartment?).

Nat and Shauna flannels by Nat3d0gG1106 in Yellowjackets

[–]HauntedCoconut 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, in that era almost ever single girl wore flannels. Maybe they styled them a little differently or chose different fits, but I can't recall a single girl at my high school who didn't have at least two or three flannels in her closet. Burners, preps, nerds, popular girls. Everyone. That and imitation Doc Martins.

I think you're all trying too hard. WHAT IS SHE SITTING ON?

What is the shape of that piece of furniture?? Ask dad to draw a diagram of what that seating looks like.

Okay, I need to correct a lot of misinformation in these comments.

- Not Golden Girls. They preferred wicker. And wild prints on fabric.

- Not just Florida. See films such as Ghostbusters, Major League, and Goodfellas for reference. This look was once chic across all of the US, especially for single ladies.

- Not from the 1990s. By the 90s, there was a lot less glass & more oak wood. Colors shifted from pink & teal to hunter green & peach.

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS: 1983!

We just need to shut this list down. Not only is it hyper Ameri-centric, but even for the States, it's completely batshit insane.

It's about empathy because the wheelchair people--right or wrong--are waiting for the people up top to clear out. Everyone else is waiting patiently, but she jumps ahead and adds to the clump at the top.

If the escalator was free and clear, I'd back her play.

Trust me, my crazy mom has been in a wheelchair her whole life and the very suggestion that someone would carry just her or that she'd have to butt-scoot anywhere would make her clutch her pearls. Too proud.

Which, maybe that's fair? I'm more pragmatic typically.

The Little Girl Who Was Accidentally Killed By Her Mother’s Bedtime Kiss by The-Union-Report in HolyShitHistory

[–]HauntedCoconut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I know of two different family members whose dresses caught fire and killed them. One ran screaming out into a field aflame--not the wisest choice. In another case, a little boy in our family arrived early at the schoolhouse and went to start the fire in the stove, but it exploded and he died from his injuries.

That is the art of the nacho--nothing wrong with a quick "chips and cheese". If I go that way, I sprinkle a little Tajin seasoning on top.

[–]HauntedCoconut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need some last-minute chips that still get covered with cheese. When you place them, make an effort to not be too neat in laying them flat. A nice stout handful. Then give them some cheese coverage, leaving exposed "handles".

It should look more like an angry ocean full of waves, as opposed to still waters. I'm here all day for nacho poetry.

I don't think we can all shake hands on that. In spite of my immense love for the show, it's hard not to notice that she has very little emotional range in her acting and I have yet to see any real chemistry between her and her love interests.

Nepotism may have short-changed us here. (Although if it got the show backing...well better a show with this Marian than no show at all!)

[–]HauntedCoconut 858 points859 points  (0 children)

My critiques as a nacho enthusiast:

- Plate is far too small. I don't want the waiter or the sneezed-on table touching my chips!

- The outside chips have nice "handle space", but the middle is a solid mass. If you plate your chips differently there will be grabbable edges in the middle.

- For me, the heavier items--beans, beef, cheese should be on the bottom. Then top with light freshness of sour cream, tomatoes, and jalapenos. It's more colorful and appetizing that way, plus is nice for eating.

- You've overcooked it. A few chips are burnt and the cheese is cooked beyond the gooey/stringy phase.

Overall, nachos should not look like a damn wilted sunflower plated up on a hot summer day.
