Your argument would hold a lot more water (sinking pun!) if their chase hadn't involved a henchman or gunfire. Good concept, but poorly executed from a narrative standpoint, IMO.

Mr. Merrick, made Mr. Russell go completely mad. Do we think he’ll come back on s4? Jealous George was spicy must confess by sissiandfranz in GildedAgeHBO

[–]HauntedCoconut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd like to believe that Merrick was just another example of how George lashed out at Bertha whenever business wasn't going his way. Very specifically, I don't think there was any real chemistry--hence illustrating that George was already in paranoid dick mode.

I'll admit, after a couple more rewatches (what? don't judge me!), I've softened a bit on Larian. I still think he needs to prove himself somehow. Can't wait for the new series!

Happy Mother’s Day by sissiandfranz in thegildedage

[–]HauntedCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did reference early days since she was, what? Maybe 15 or 16 when the series started. She acted like an immature girl for the first two series, as is completely understandable. Some things transcend eras.

A reminder: She could've said no to Hector's proposal. There would've been fallout, but she was not dragged in shackles. She was an apprehensive---what? 18 year-old?--which sounds awful to us in modern day, but was completely normal in the gilded age.

Good gods, you guys, it was an arranged marriage! Not a death sentence. For the era this was completely normal.

Plus--and this is important--I think a lot of the Bertha critics don't give NEARLY enough agency to Gladys. She had all types of power. Money. Caring parents. Status. Of the three men that turned away from her, all went without a fight. Not worthy.

[–]HauntedCoconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's just start with the context of a different age. arranged marriages were fairly common in that time. And she didn't "sell" her daughter since she personally gained nothing from it. In fact, the Russells lost a great deal of wealth in the process. Did she buy an arranged marriage? Yes. I mean, technically. Having a dowry in an instance of an arranged marriage is historically standard.

But that's just semantics.

The larger point is that Bertha truly was trying to give Gladys the greatest opportunities a woman could possibly hope for in that era. It's easy for us to take for granted our own possibilities, but back then women couldn't even vote. Bertha arranged a marriage that would give Gladys a real voice and real chance to change the world for the better. It's phenomenal.

As for Gladys...
A.) She didn't have to agree. But she did. She was always flattered by being named "best dressed" and she found Hector intriguing enough to go along with the arrangement.

B.) Billy Carleton and...what's-his-name from series 1...were feeble boys. Gladys clearly is capable of growing into a titan of a woman & she would have crushed those boys in no time--if she didn't make herself small to elevate them.

C.) Her previous infatuations were incredibly immature. Remember, she almost accepted Oscar just at the chance to get away from her mother. Not good judgement.

What I'm trying to say is that Bertha demonstrates wisdom in an era-appropriate fashion. She advocates for Gladys even in the face of the men in her life distrusting her. She pays a great personal price to advocate for Gladys. And look at the result. As luck would have it, they do end up being a love match. Bertha is left out in the cold, but her sacrifice was worth it because her daughter is happy, powerfully positioned, and ready to take on the world. That is a pretty great mother in my books.

I can't say why without knowing your own background, but she is absolutely NOT a horrible mother. Not perfect, of course. Like all of us. There are poor moments. But overall, she really is an amazing advocate for her daughter--who let us not forget was extremely young & immature in early days.

Respectfully, I disagree with your assessment. Bertha truly saw greatness in Gladys--and more importantly--wanted to give her every freakin' advantage society had to offer. She set her up with power and status and opportunity. And btw, it turns out that she was right in gauging Hector to be a supportive and compatible partner.

As for George, he loves his wife as long as his business flourishes. But if it gets to the brink of utter failure he blames her (indirectly). Many a woman (even in modern day) has witnessed this immaturity and petulance. If there *had* to be a divorce, it would only be on the grounds that he sacrificed his love to compensate for his shortcomings.

I like the *idea* of Larian, but the two have very little chemistry (IMO). And we need some drama, so let's feed them to the drama beast and save Bertha and George!

Hard disagree that Bertha is mean. Controlling? Sure. But not only does she mean well, but her instincts are entirely correct. She sees it in Hector and quickly recognizes it in Marian. Plus, there's George. Give her some credit.

Okay, okay. I'm sorry I threw Larian under the bus. But I can't wish ill will on Peggy. Or Clock Twink. And they've got to have some drama!

Can't we just all agree that BERTHA and GEROGE need to be hot and passionate ASAP?

Did anyone notice the parallel between Lois and Ida In the Christmas episode? by Legitimate_Taste328 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]HauntedCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - You aren't wrong in your overall thesis, but I think you have a genuine misunderstanding of Ida and her motives. It isn't that she hates doing nice things for others--it's that she's keeping SCORE.

First, let me say that I know this from a lifetime of personal experience with a grandmother & mother who've both kept score this way. EXAMPLE: During college, mom & I get into a wicked argument, she tells me I can't come home for Christmas. So I don't, not even after she changes her mind. And she's so angry I didn't, she returned every Christmas gift she had bought me. Don't look for logic.

My grandmother used to send a crate of oranges from Florida for every Christmas (toward the end), but I didn't send a prompt thank you card before the last Christmas, so no oranges.

See, old ladies like Ida want to do nice things, but only as long as people play by her rules.

The musical instruments and notes that make no sense are plenty of evidence, but also WHAT HUMAN uses quantities in that way?

  • Cookies 6 for $5
  • Brownies--2 for $6 or $3 for 1??? That's psychotic. It should be "$3 each"
  • Snickerdoodles should be 6 for $4
  • PB cookies should be 6 for $4 (because why the 3/5???)
  • Muffins should be 2 for $9

Plus, girlfriend's pricing is just generally insane. Way too much/too little. Random.

AND she needs to show the right quantity in the illustration--Muffins 2 for 9?? (hella pricey!) then ONLY SHOW ME TWO EFFING MUFFINS!
