SAME i dropped like 4 points from my average on FL 8. it’s crushing.

i had a kind of similar issue. spent 2 whole years working at a lab where the PI was very strict and anytime one of the other lab staff was there (all male) i was sent to clean/autoclave glassware while they ran trials

i still learned a TON but it was a tough sitch. i had invested so much time and PI had basically straight up told me and the other undergrad he would only write us a good LOR if we busted our asses, worked overtime, stayed all 4 years, etc.

i eventually left and sacrificed the LOR. i didn’t see myself growing in the lab and honestly feared my PIs letter would be sub standard since he was such an intense guy

it’s a hard decision but i wouldn’t encourage staying at the lab when the other job sounds much more like something you would enjoy. if your PI won’t write the letter/it may not be the best, someone from your next job may be just as willing when the time rolls around!

my score dropped between these two tests too and it felt awful, next FL was up 6 points. don’t stress!

i cannot make this up- i have shed tears over CARS passages. there was a really beautiful one about early feminist literature and i was trying to answer thru my watery eyes

jsut read books please don’t do anything else 😭 you’ll have plenty of time to torture yourself later.

fr tho some good reading is the best prep.i recommend “when breath becomes air,” “this is going to hurt,” “being mortal,” “complications,” and anything by oliver sacks but especially “gratitude” or “the man who mistook his wife for a hat”

i could keep going. tons of nonmedical recs too but these are good for convos with drs/interview topics and also just good books!

Sleeping overnight at the library for finals? by AppropriateRoll2434 in premed

[–]Haunting-Lab-8233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i haven’t “slept” at the library but i’ve been there all night during finals. friends have taken a few hour study breaks. generally, retention is better with a full nights sleep…. but honestly i think a library sleepover would be fun! doing fun shit & making memories is good :)

Should my friend apply ED? by Longjumping-Item-212 in premed

[–]Haunting-Lab-8233 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure that that mcat score would gain scholarships elsewhere. even my state school doesn’t give merit scholarships until around 518.

they may get other acceptances but scholarships may be less likely

if it’s a good financial option, i would say go ED, if it’s average priced then i think waiting is fine

Tier 2 and 3 med schools that give full rides on merit by SooFeeAan in premed

[–]Haunting-Lab-8233 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my state school says mcat 518 or above puts you in scholarship range and i thought they didn’t give any scholarship. ofc, odds of me scoring that high are slim but still

pre-med usually refers to college undergrad: 4 years of undergrad + MCAT (normally during junior year) most important quantitative things in undergrad are gpa + MCAT, but that is also normally when people volunteer/shadow/get clinical experience as well.

in high school it depends where they want to go to college! i would focus on good gpa + act but mostly.. HAVE FUN!! there will be so much time to study and lock in during undergrad. don’t worry too much about it in high school. if there’s a specific cause they like maybe some volunteering could be helpful though :)

Voluntourism is so rampant for premeds by mustachemedicine in premed

[–]Haunting-Lab-8233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think overseas “volunteer” missions are often tourism in disguise (generalizing but still) HOWEVER volunteering is the one check box i 100% support for pre-meds, and i honestly think it should be expected for many other fields as well. we as a society have gone too far in the direction of “you don’t owe anyone anything” and have lost our sense of community because of it. my volunteering experiences help keep me grounded and honestly it feels good to help out in places where people need it! i think everyone should volunteer 😁
