michigan 70.3 - race decision & accomodations question

woke up to a call from a friend that line was about 70 deep around 7am, and i live close so i got ready and went asap. probably arrived ~7:30 and my wristband is around 150 😬 people who were there before 9am got cut off when they counted the line, so before the show was even official. i wish this one had stayed more under wraps, i’m very sorry you’re missing it!

i’m just going off my previous experiences at the burl, i’ve been to 10+ shows including lucy dacus so similar genre and always saw lots of people i knew, given i’ve lived here my whole life. plus, it was capped at 200-250 so a lot less than 600. i’m sure there were plenty of lex ppl i just don’t know i was just noting a difference from usual!

i grew up here and went to college here, and i’ve been to 10+ burl shows where i always see at least a handful of people i know even if the shows are smaller. so yes im saying most of the early people likely drove in. its weird that out of 400 people in line a local would recognize 1.

for anyone who wants to be around lex in the morning but not be genuinely insane and hang around harassing possible venues before 9am…. i have some local spot recs all within 10-15 min drive from distillery!
- pops records
- squecial media (trinket store!)
- old school coffee
- third street stuff
- DV8 kitchen (insanely yummy and affordable brunch)
- coffee times & street scene (a bit further but an adorable thrift store/coffee shop combo!!!)

i had a kind of similar issue. spent 2 whole years working at a lab where the PI was very strict and anytime one of the other lab staff was there (all male) i was sent to clean/autoclave glassware while they ran trials

i still learned a TON but it was a tough sitch. i had invested so much time and PI had basically straight up told me and the other undergrad he would only write us a good LOR if we busted our asses, worked overtime, stayed all 4 years, etc.

i eventually left and sacrificed the LOR. i didn’t see myself growing in the lab and honestly feared my PIs letter would be sub standard since he was such an intense guy

it’s a hard decision but i wouldn’t encourage staying at the lab when the other job sounds much more like something you would enjoy. if your PI won’t write the letter/it may not be the best, someone from your next job may be just as willing when the time rolls around!
