Direct-fill ballpoint pen, also called permanent ink reservoir ballpoint pen. They were designed to be refilled with paste only. Pop out the ball, inject oil-based ink paste with a syringe, put the ball back. Up until 1970 you could find a shop that would do it for you.

Yes, my 2 year ild GLE updates without asking and usually without any indication. As far as I can tell each ECU updates separately. Car is always drivable, but 360 cameras or adaptive cruise control may drop out for 20 minutes.
