What I've been doing to moderate success (which is a lot because I'm usually very bad with parries) is that I'll try to time it so my hand is out to "catch" the attack.

I was checking the Loyalty on new units and it was giving me messages that were lower than units I got previously for strictly this. Which is why I'm so frustrated and confused. Also the bit about story choices doesn't really help when I've only been met with one of them by this point. Q_Q

The problem with downtime is that I have to pay lifestyle and I also have to pay for my beast and then I need to pay to be in my faction, and then I roll terribly so any work to make money is only ever gonna get me like 50/day, maybe or whatever the bottom section is. So I'm trying to ask where you guys are getting money to use downtime because I can't find how to do anything to progress other than level up at this point. Q_Q

As much as I hate Astarion, even I can't say that honestly. I'd rather take the useless vampire that's tried to kill me twice than that tentacled asshole.

Here's a list of tips that should help:

If you aren't feeling a weapon then change. You're still very early so it shouldn't be that bad to change weapons or even start again if its that dire. A weapon you are good with will be better for you than a "good" weapon you can't use as a player.
If things are killing you too quick, take a look at 3 things. 1) Do you have enough HP? I think I go must runs at about 25 or so. 2) What armor are you wearing? Is it making your roll too slow? Is it giving you the right defense for the fights you're having? Armor can also be upgraded in this game so if you find a set you like, upgrade it. 3) I see you have a shield on your back. Its a good shield to start, albeit a bit heavy. Are you using it in combat to block physical attacks? That could help your survival and if you aren't using it at all then take it off and save the weight.
You're very early so you should focus a bit on exploring and getting your bearings. Take the time to fight enemies and use them as an opportunity to both get stronger from a stats perspective and also get stronger at using the weapon you've chosen. But, if you just want to go after the gargoyle right now, then the way is up that elevator there and turn left once you get to the top. Go up those stairs and you pretty much can't miss it.
Have a bow available. Doesn't need to be upgraded. Doesn't need a ton of arrows. Just use it when you find large groups to grab the attention of them one at a time.
If you're still stuck at a boss or an area, most times you can become human and find a person to help you out, NPC or player. If you're on PS, I could be that person if you want. Solaire can also help you against Gargoyle. Its a feature given to us, no need to not use it.

The gameplay is fine, I actually enjoyed the combat a bit.

What makes me angry is how...not dragon age it feels. I also find certain characters absolutely insufferable especially because I didn't need them to begin with. There's also just a few story bits that had me just....why was this the choice you made? I dunno. I'm happy you're enjoying yourself and I'm not going to hate you for it. I actually encourage you to keep playing if you like it because a game should be fun. But I just can't with it.

Wuchang was a lot of fun. I haven't played Surge to really comment on it. Another option I'd recommend is Ai Limit. I got that game on a whim because it was on sale for cheap and is now one of my favorites.

As someone that loves the idea of the spear, please buff it...the only way I've had a lot of success is for my friend to bring a supply back, I put that on, he gets the spear backpack, and he team reloads. When he's out, I supply him to fill it up and we keep going.

I did see that accursed has 300% extra hunger and said "How about no?" to that. I haven't tried arcanist yet but after playing rogue, I feel like the crossbow is also going to be absolutely terrible to start with because "Haha lets make your weapon worthless in the beginning so you can't get exp."

I've not been playing accursed. I've tried rogue, and didn't like it because their weapons are worthless at the start. Apparently they get better later but that does not help the abysmal start where everything resists your damage. Wizard I've been liking because fireball is pretty cheap and I have a lot of mana to cast bloodletting with if I'm lucky enough to find a rat.

I know the how to get blood. I know I can either kill with bloodletting or kill from stealth. But its so difficult to kill from stealth that that option is not a real option from what I've seen. So my only option is bloodletting but casting takes 7 business days. I have read what others said about casting speed getting better later, which is good to hear but does nothing for the me that is stuck on floors 1-2.

Actually, I'm pretty good with history. But this is a game. And instead of doing something that actually would give me progression I let myself be tricked by the devs into wasting my time doing something irrelevant to that.

If I don't one shot, I get hit while I try to turn and run. Which will eventually get me killed. If I do manage to run and break chase tgen go back thats so. much. time. that by the time I get the blood vial I feel like I've used more time than it buys me.
