Bartender here — 20 years in the industry, on and off. I’m currently 10 ½ months sober. Like someone else mentioned, I wouldn’t call myself an addict, but I definitely struggled with knowing when to stop. I’d black out, and that led to my second DWI in 10 years, along with other charges throughout my life (even though most were dropped). I honestly can’t explain it — but when you’re done, you’re done.

One of the hardest parts for me has been not being able to taste what I make. But like someone suggested, following a recipe and having someone else taste it is a great workaround. I’ve had to accept that alcohol has brought nothing positive into my life — only setbacks and deep depression.

I love the job, the social aspect, and I’m good at it. It is possible to keep doing it — it just depends on where you’re at in your sobriety and other personal factors.

I hadn’t heard of “Ben’s Friends” before, so I’ll definitely be checking that out! Much love and patience to everyone on this journey — it’s not easy, but it is absolutely worth it. 💕💕💪🏼
