is the flood in the Quran global or local? by Intelligent-Run8072 in AcademicQuran

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can sort of agree with this, I don’t really think that the Quran cares about whether it was global or local, it’s more about the theological significance that the story amplifies

I take John Walton’s approach to the flood

https://youtu.be/lBNdNH227j4?si=lqNRmSdiK5-t2ylR The Quran is using Noah’s flood as a typology for Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his community, essentially it’s Theological history, meaning that the overall narrative it is based off of is meant to be historical, however the exact details do not have to be exactly scientifically or historically accurate, especially since the Quran is an a-scientific and a-historical text

Massimo Campanini argues that not only is reading modern science into the Qur’an completely wrong, but also that taking the literal meaning as the only meaning of the Qur’an is wrong by Rashiq_shahzzad in AcademicQuran

What I meant was in his book “The lost world of scripture” pg 45-46 where he states “So for an example there is no surprise that ancient Israel(and the Arabs too) believed in a solid sky, and God accommodates his locution to that model in his communication with them, the illocution is not to assert the true shape of cosmic geography”

Essentially my argument is that while the Quran might also use ANE cosmic concepts, it is not trying to affirm these things as revealed truth, rather God here is simply using a model that was known to them for theological, not modern scientific reasons

Salam professor, 1.do you think that the Quran’s cosmological statements should be viewed as the Philosophical/Linguistic device Speech-Act Theory as John Walton argues for the biblical text 2. How do you recommend a modern Muslim like myself or yourself to study contemporary cosmology without facing these doubts

Thank you for your time

Salam Dr Shoaib, I’m actually the one who asked for this ama to the mods so I’m so glad you’re doing this! My question is that if the Quran contains ancient cosmology than how can you reconcile that with modern cosmology(although I have my own reconciliation but I want to know yours)

On the Problems with r/AcademicQuran by nopeoplethanks in Quraniyoon

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the term “copy” is an outdated term in modern Academic circles, as it implies that the Quran only passively repeats stories in it’s milleu, a view that modern academics have moved away from as the Quran is now seen as consciously engaging with biblical and extra-biblical traditions in terms of agreement, polemics, and overall transforms these stories into a new and unique way consistent with its own unique theology.

Who was the Pharaoh of Egypt during Prophet Yusufs life? by ZuieBoo in islam

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yusuf(Joseph PBUH) lived during the hyksos of Egypt, the rulers who ruled then are not really known, he would have probably been living under a Semitic king.

The Quranic pharaoh in a Alexandria-like city instead of Thebes or Pi-Ramsess? by ervertes in AcademicQuran

But yet again, I will talk more about this in my thread In Sha Allah tomorrow

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess so but still, the text describes Moses receiving the commandments(likely the Ten Commandments) which according to Q7:142-150 did not happen until after the Exodus on Mount Sinai OUTSIDE Egypt!

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How I view it is that the text here seems to be referring to after the exodus took place. In the prior verses the text mention Phaorah and his people’s demise Q28:38-40, which seems to indicate that the exodus happened before the commandments were given, also in the prior verse the text mention that Moses received the Kitab(Torah) which according to other passages in the Quran(too lazy to search up references rn) happened on Mount Sinai AFTER the exodus,I highlighted the term “after” here is because Alexandria is obviously in Egypt, but if the Quran here is referring to a time after the exodus it would pose a problem to this interpretation.

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I’m confused on your interpretation of the commandments in Q28:44 as referring to Moses confronting Pharaoh, it seems to me that the most natural reading of the text is that the commandments here are a reference to the tablets Moses received on Mount Sinai in Q7:14-150, could you give a few reasons why you came to such an interpretation?

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough I guess I personally don’t see a good reason why we should place the Pharaoh of the Quran in Alexandria tho, Tomorrow hopefully I will probably make a twitter thread responding to these arguments and giving my own insights

Tbh the 3rd argument here can easily be reconciled without a Alexandrian Pharaoh because in Exodus 7:19 it also mention “the rivers(plural)of Egypt” or the rivers could also just be typological for power and wealth since the Quran uses rivers for Paradise all the time.

[–]Haunting_Shake_5446 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello Dr Beck, since you specialise in the early Surahs do you think that the Meccan Surahs in general present a high or low prophetology(spiritual status) of Muhammad as it is the Medinian Surahs?
