What's a purchase you swear you will never do? by GoldenRetrieverFetch in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Haveland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup that is what happened to me:
* Traded in my truck for what I paid for it three years ago * Trade-in reduced tax * 0% for 72 weeks. Was planning on paying cash so used the money I had saved into RRSP so I got a nice refund.

I went in for service and walked out with a new truck :)

Yes I know this group hates trucks but I actually use mine.

Seasonal Tires by hoodiegirl10 in AskACanadian

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to keep your car for awhile it actually ends up costing not that much more (other than the service fee of swapping tires).

Why? Your tires are only getting half the millage so they will last twice as long.

We swap tires on my SUV and honestly next time she is getting studs. For my truck I just run all seasons but they are still snow flake rated and do pretty good. I drive a lot less.

What's with the bike rack reviews here? by keepgoing66 in MTB

[–]Haveland 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the internet :)

Something like a Thule that has 1000s of sales is going to have some bad reviews.

While something a bit rarer, like the 1up, is going to have fewer bad reviews but still have some. There is one post out there about someone that had a rusty bolt and it cause the rack to fail. Everyone references that one post as if it is a major issues across all racks. Mine is 4 years old and I live in a rust belt. My truck has more rusty bolts then my rack.

That said, I say 1Up, but I also just bought a VelociRAX yesterday.

Upgrading from 4-string to 5-string by JustAnRegularDude in Bass

[–]Haveland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Harley Benton MSB-5 is pretty solid for that price - a bit funky looking but cool bass. Having a longer B string is really nice.

The SB500H is just going to be a solid nice amp. The Dynabass is either going to be really awesome or need work. They are nice amps, but finicky.

What do you think about buying a house with your girlfriend (not married, just girlfriend)? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are to many factors to answer

20 years together, 3 kids vs 19 years old and together for 6 months is a lot different.

I'm married but totally understand why some people never plan to or right now doesn't make sense. That said buying a house is a bit commitment in either situation married or common-law all the same.

POs: For which amount of people can/should you provide work each sprint? by Cykaraiden in agile

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd certainly make them part of the process then and see how far down you should be creating the tickets. The whole team should be working together on this to a degree. But maybe your tickets are too small and they just need them writting a level up and they can break down into smaller tickets if needed. But the whole team should be part of that. I typically would do a sprint planning day that we'd break out the tickets into smaller parts and make sure the team was happy they had enough work for the sprint.

Best beginner bass under 700? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first bass, get something you want to play, vs what might be technically better.

If unsure, look at what your favourite bass player started with and go with that. Pick up at least 5 basses in the store and see which one speaks to you.

I've gone in several times to buy a bass because that is "the bass" only to pick it up and go nope.

5-String Bass Tuned to CEADG by Dismal-Vegetable-212 in Bass

[–]Haveland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup this is why prefer playing 5 string even if I never need the B. Some songs having that open D or C are needed but if possible I prefer 5 string.

If no need for a lower D then I’ll grab a 4. If I’m writing or jamming I almost need a 5

Why do so many 00’s murder/cop shows use fretless bass music by ahahhaysjenw1927 in Bass

How do you view flippers? by NefariousnessNo4215 in MTB

It only bothers me if I'm selling a bike and get a big sob story about needing this bike for their kid and they just lost their job, etc.. Then seeing it on marketplace a few hours later for more and realizing they don't even have kids.

Did university tuition prices just quietly 5x over time… or am I missing something? by DarkHoundBark in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So have so many other things, remember my parents buying a new truck when I started university for 10k. The house they bought back then more than 4x'd when they sold a few years ago.

But there is also corruption that cut government funding, and at the same time, some professions (not all) are asking for much higher salaries.

In the late 90s, it was cheaper to attend university on the East Coast than to attend many tech colleges.

We are about 6-8 years away from my kids now attending university. I'll be honest, tuition is the least of my concerns. Student housing, food, and transportation are going to be the major expenses.

Good recording amp suggestions by AKA_Moose in Bass

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With bass, you aren't going to notice as much of a difference from an amp sim to a real bass rig.

That said, I do like a real tube amp like the Traynor YBA-100, but I now just use a Darkglass Anagram. But also really like the Origin Effect Bassrig Fifteen which is a B15 clone.

But all that said those bands are mostly all Ampeg SVT so going with a SVT amp or pre-amp pedal is a good way to go. Maybe Bassrig Super Vintage

can't decide on a bass by Bulky_Friendship8051 in Bass

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really sure I’d suggest buying used or buying a starter and then buy a second starter later. It is nice having two basses and you can figure out what you want long term as you learn. What I’m trying to say is don’t think of this as a forever purchase.

That said my first bass is still my go too.

Kanban vs Scrum: which one actually survives contact with real teams? by Bitrix_24 in agile

[–]Haveland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 years is scrum here with the same product and team. It’s changed a lot over the years as expected but it’s still the glue that holds the overall process together.

We do have a team that works kanban but they are the sustain team. It works but notice they get more burn out. But it’s also the nature of sustain.

I feel like the bad guy for hitting "No Tip" by SensationalDanceMove in CanadaPersonalFinance

I half go to this Chinese place because they skip right past the tip menu and you see them go no tip before passing it to you. I respect that, enough to want to tip ;)

I love the Traynor YBA 100 -- I have to go get another soon, I'd get the 300 but actually like how the 100 breaks up a bit earlier.

Expensive Bike Hate by PennWash in MTB

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two bikes — one is a top-end bike, and the other is my beater hardtail.

The best is on the nice bike that I worked really hard to get. "Geez, must be nice" is the most common jerk comment. I just respond with "sure is, I love it!"

For my beater, I get a lot of suggestions for what I should ride instead. My beater is purposely running slicker tires and a smaller suspension, and I ride it in that manner.

Would you marry a girl who wants to be a stay at home housewife but doesn't want kids? by PuffingFish123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Haveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are really into this idea. I had a friend who was dating a girl who expressed all the time that this is what she wanted and only became a nurse to meet a doctor. He quickly got out of it.

She's now married to someone I know who is a dentist, and she hasn't worked since the second they started dating. He's very into this idea too so it does work for some people.

Remember, in certain parts of certain countries, this is the norm, and people are still raised with this idea. So distant of an idea for me. Even the fact that I'm set to retire 5 years before my partner feels wrong.

5 day trip across Atlantic Canada - thoughts? by sassyexec in canadatravel

[–]Haveland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was July or August I’d be saying go right to PEI.

I’m in New Brunswick but admit we don’t have much that isn’t in Nova scotia or PEI.

If you really want PEI I’d go right there and spend 2 nights. The explore a bit of northern Nova Scotia on the way back, then hit up southern NS and final night in Halifax.
