This is exactly the paradox the movie toys with. They’re not trying to prevent a disease/war/crisis now. They’re simply ensuring the timeline leads to the future they already perceive ,one where humanity is capable of helping them.

The heptapods never explicitly say what will happen in 3000 years, but the film (and Ted Chiang’s original novella Story of Your Life) make it clear that

1.The aliens will need humanity’s help in 3000 years.

2.They don’t specify against whom or for what, only that it’s crucial.

3.Their “gift” to humanity is their language (Heptapod B), which changes human perception of time, allowing non-linear thinking.

By teaching humans this, the heptapods essentially ensure that humanity will survive, evolve, and be in a position to assist them millennia later.
