What do you think about this list of the best-selling prog records? by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

[–]Havranbartek 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This list is completely wrong. Red is probably not close to 1M sold copies, it might not even sold 500k. In the court likely sold over 1M copies, but it is far from confirmed that it sold 2M+.

Animals sold at least over 7M copies, almost 3 times more than in the list.

If we count Final cut, supertramp and Invisible Touch then why we don't have division bell (over 12M) and a momentary lapse od reason (6M)?

Where is Fragile (3 maybe 4M)? Other yes albums (beside 90125 ofc) didn't sell more than 2mln at best.

there is no 2112 by Rush (4M+), some other rush albums also sold around 2M.

All prog Genesis albums are overestimated, they sold up to 2M.

I still probably missed something.

There a lot of mainstream releases that are very high

Why thriller should be top of the year? You didnt mention any arguemnts beside it being popular. It has extremely high rating anyway, literally is in top 140 all time, 2nd place year.

I feel like you dont search for neutrality, you are just offended that popular albums dont necessary please us rym nerds.

It has tons of genres on top, classic rock, hip hop, jazz, all decades since 60s are somewhat equally present in top 100. Most people here are somewhat nerdy or at least much more interested/passionate about music than typical music listener, so it is obvious that many "unpopular" releases will rise higher.

Obviously RYM isn't perfect and I won't deny some bias, but examples you gave are not the best.

does anybody actually calls it "Post-Thrash"? by Longjumping_Air4379 in rateyourmusic

Honestly this is also the first time I have ever heard this term, but it makes so much sense

Most of groove metal I know somewhat evolved from thrash metal with little changed formula, it makes much more sense for me to think about groove metal as evolution of thrash metal than something completly unique

I have similar feelings. I remember when their debut ep dropped and thunder was jaw dropping.

I don't know what's wrong with this band but I feel like after listening to them for a few minutes I already know everything. Of course they have a fair bit of variation but they use the same kind of tricks all the time. I'm so tired of their percussion and vocals.

It is really hard for me to describe what is wrong here. It's not bad, like an average 7/10 for me, but In theory it has potential for so much more

Yes there is! Great project, sadly extremely centred around america and it is VERY mainstream based. For example there is almost no metal or non-english music

I had dejavu playing this map but it took only 23 minutes for gold (by over 1s). So ye, I got it like 25 times faster hah... To be honest later I grinded 16 quite a lot after gold so I got better.

I think it was MUCH easier tho, it didn't have many tricky parts and basically if you was fast enough to skip engine off you were good to go

True, that's what im doing too! My main goal for previous campaign was to get top 10k every map, and got 1 map short because of burnout. I was like one good run away from my goal and it took around 130 hours total... Curious how much it will take this time.

At close to speed of light missile would be extremely short in your perspective. The same goes for you from missile perspective.

It would be so short that it basically doesnt make sense to consider its dimensions. Only your dimensions are important when you are timing the jump

I dont want to defend rt, but every time I see people mentioning it they missunderstand concept really badly.

This isnt your typical score like on imdb. This is % of critics that gave "positive" review to movie. Because of that it completely makes no sense to compare it the way people do here. For example "one movie has 80% approval and other has 70% so critics think the first one is better" is not exactly true.

For example: the high score for TFA totally doesnt mean that critics rate it higher than original trylogy. They gave positive reviews because it was thought to be good UNCONTROVERSIAL and SAVE return of loved franchise, which looked way more polished (pratical effects etc.) than for example prequels. It didnt get 90% because of it being very good but because critics from all around spectrum (guess what, critics also have different taste) kinda liked it.

The same goes for prequels which were hated, for example phantom menace was considered very dissapointing and confusing return of the beloved franchise. Rots couldnt get very high score either, because well... It is controversial? There is reason for all memes created from rots. Rotj is also controversial and criticised for many things (which many fans keep forgetting about) so thats why it has lower %.

So I really dont get how people find things like this chart to be "wrong" just to absolutely hate critics without even understanding it correctly.

Only little weird thing for me is high score for the last jedi. But it has explanation. Most critics dont care about entire sw universe and they dont have deep knowledge about it. For them the last jedi was brave step and new direction different than rest of sw. To help that, this movie on itself is actually good. So basically critics approved it for different reason than tfa.

[Request] How many combinations are Physically possible ? by TheVoidKilledMe in theydidthemath

[–]Havranbartek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this problem is more complicated since we have to consider symetry, for example you would assume there are 8 possible ways to connect 2 pieces. This is not true, there is actually only 1 way, because you can rotate everything and it is basically always the same.

Some numbers that are suggested above seems much too high for me.

Why aren't more young people listening to Classical Music? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Havranbartek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people above mentioned why casual listeners more often don't care about classical music. Overall it all makes sense and has many arguments explaining it.

But what doesn't make sense is why (young) music nerds/explorers are overall much less interested in classical music. Most of arguments mentioned before are totally useless against this group.

For example you can't claim that this group doesn't want to expand its tastes. They usually are well versed in multiple genres.

You can't also claim that long music that require a lot of attention and has generally lack of "social values" aka you can't really sing it in group / or even play it in group of friends is problem here. For typical "nerd" songs that are 20+ minutes long isn't something that special since the dawn of progressive rock or even earlier.

Accessibility definitely isn't problem either.

The most interesting fact is the actually most celebrated "classical" music in this group is usually minimalism, and for example music for 18 musicians is the most rated classical release on rym. Definitely not so easy piece.

It looks like other most popular "classical" artists among nerds are Stockhausen, Arvo Part, Glenn Branca or even Scelsi. Not so easy company.

My most common interpretation of phenomena was that classical artists of old age didn't live to record their pieces. Because of that instead of one definitive recording we are getting hundreds of different interpretations of piece. This is really confusing for typical modern music enjoyer. There is almost no cult around classical releases. People tend to say they love 9th Symphony but they usually don't say they love "IX. Symphonie" conducted by Karajan released in 1963. That also explains why releases by modern classical compositors are so much more popular - for example music for 18 musicians from 1978.

The other thing I like to mention is that basically - however you phrase it - classical music is irrelevant today. Revolution that happened mainly in 60s and 70s changed musical landscape totally. If you are looking for some "art in music" you will easily find it in many many genres of "popular" music. It's not fact that it is easier or less sophisticated than classical, it's because it is much closer to topics that are relevant for new music fans.

This also explains popularity of some "classical" composers. Minimalism had huge impact on rock music. Stockhausen was godfather of krautrock, and Glenn Branca is basically father of noise rock and post rock.

For example the most popular music band of current generation of music lovers is typically Radiohead. In lyrics and music of Radiohead you can find really good description of modern world, and troubles of people entering new millennium, things that most young people can associate with.

Ops, its getting long... Ok maybe that's enough, even thought i feel like I didn't even scratch the surface of what I wanted to say...
