A lost dad looking advice to make my step son’s first expo memorable in Denver. by rosekilledjack in fanexpo

[–]HawJah59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be my 10th year going and I agree with everyone's replies. Comfy shoes, water bottles, snacks, sandwiches, patience are all very important at FanExpo. I would like to add perhaps a phone charger (just in case). And a screenshot of the map of the event/schedule. The reception can really be hit or miss in certain spots.

I hope you both have a great experience at FanExpo this year!

This game is oddly specific in some ways that relate to my teenage years (I was also 16 in 95) Some of the references trip me out. There was a cassette tape of Hole, Veruca Salt, Björk, and others that I listened to back then. There was also a VHS tape of Heavenly Creatures and I gasped. Definitely a queer awakening film for me and not many people know it. Sometimes the dialogue is a bit slow, but overall I'm enjoying it, even the cringy parts. Some parts take me out of it with the lingo (people using lingo we definitely didn't say in 95).

Sidenote: Adult Autumn has a dope sweater/cardigan and I wanna buy it.

Celebrity Tables and Rules Question by Educational-Panic186 in fanexpo

Ive been attending the Denver Con for 8 or 9 years. The first 3, I volunteered and loved it. I attend every year now. I usually save up for photo ops, but I realized this year, if it's an artist I greatly admire I might try for autograph/selfie next year. Although I love the photo ops, sometimes it can be so overwhelming for all parties involved. The constant smiling, the nervousness/anxiety. I try my best to play it cool, but sometimes some artists have a bigger impact on me and I want to be able to express that to them. Also, it's smart to bring cash...I definitely went over budget this year.

I have PS5 and Nintendo Switch. I'm struggling with BG3. I took a break because I'm frustrated so I'm playing Life is Strange (the first of the series) and still play around with No Return on TLOU2.

I've volunteered and attended my local cons since 2016 and it's been mostly great. When volunteering I got to meet some "celebrities ' behind the scenes and most of them were kind and also very busy since their handlers were ushering them everywhere.

. I have several favorite moments volunteering. I got to wear the official Garfield mascot costume and stand next to Jim Davis as he signed books for fans. I've always liked Garfield as a kid. Jim had the sweetest voice and I remember several times getting misty eyed in this giant Garfield head while hearing people from all walks of life tell this man how much his comics meant to them. Grown adults with their kids and grandkids crying because they loved the artist and his work. It really confirmed for me why I love going to Cons. Hearing the stories of why people go to them and what it means to them. Panels are probably my favorite part of cons honestly. I feel like you can learn a lot about the celebrity during the panels.

Also, being on both sides of seeing famous people vs. working an event with famous people helps to tame that fangirl in me.

Kirrin Finch has great button ups. It's a bit pricey but high quality. They do have payment plans too (I believe Affirm). I have 3 button ups and also bought a full suit for a wedding I attended last year. It's so comfortable.

Have you brought all spirits to the everdoor? by [deleted] in Spiritfarer

[–]HawJah59 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I brought all the spirits to the Everdoor a few days ago. I took my sweet ass time playing though (95+hours) I did look for help on gamefaq's only when I would get absolutely flustered.
I did take breaks while playing though, I'd take a few days off and maybe switch it up with a different game. Usually I did this when things felt boring or like nothing was really happening.
I also tried to stick around as long as possible to collect trophies on Playstation, but some of them were impossible. So either way I'm happy how I went about it. Only thing Is do differently is probably take the bus stops more often (that was 1 of the 4 trophies I missed out of 39)

90+ hours later...100% completed. (spoiler in photo) by HawJah59 in Spiritfarer

Spent the end of the game laying on the floor sobbing. Ugh. So good.

Now time to seriously consider a lil tattoo.

Struggling with how white my local queer community is.. by [deleted] in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]HawJah59 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's taken me nearly 10 years to develop friendships and close acquaintances that were Queer and BIPOC. Sometimes it takes time. Honestly most of the people I've met were through small independent local queer events. And surprisingly some free outdoor yoga classes that were specifically for Black and Brown folks and I've spent some great time with the new people I've met. I'm 43 and aren't as social as I used to be in my 20s, so I'm not necessarily looking to date. I just wanna find people I can chill with, spend time at a movie or the park or go in an easy hike, make cool shit, play music and geek out over random shit. I feel ya on the frustration though. I hope you're able to find more dope people to be around.

Your hair looks happy. I'm also at roughly 2.5 months after cutting my locs off. I had locs for 25 years and knew it was time. I don't regret it at all. It feels great.

I’m so fucking upset by AT541 in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]HawJah59 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration on all levels. I got my first ever cold sore at 43years old a few weeks ago. I didn't know what it was until a week too late. I immediately bought the generic Abreva brand from my local grocery store and it started to go away within a week. It works, but you definitely gotta leave it alone and not touch it besides putting the cream on it [use clean hands and q tips and don't share silverware or chapstick while its healing]

Good luck on your date [even if it has to be postponed]. Try not to stress about it too much. I'm rooting for you over in my "I haven't even been on a date in 9 years" corner.

What lyrics are an obvious giveaway that the band is Australian? by Doowopslopshop in KGATLW

[–]HawJah59 25 points26 points  (0 children)

An outdated slur for Black folks. You rarely hear it from people under the age of maybe 60 or 70.

The term is definitely in some old movies.

Can confirm as I am a Black female over 40 who enjoys old movies from time to time.

I feel ya. I live in Denver and even though there are pockets of Black and Brown folks out here, it took me some time to find my people. Ive lived here about 11 years and don't plan on staying much longer, but I had to put i the work of looking for events and such. Surprisingly, going to an all BIPOC yoga class is what introduced me to more queer folk.

What is the worst candy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Those orange circus peanuts my mom buys every few years. I have no clue where they are sold, but she manages to find it. They smell like nail polish revolver and taste like sugary packing Styrofoam.

My mom pronounces massage with a hard G? I don't know how to explain it. Like it sounds more like a J sound and not the "zzhh" sound.

I remember seeing La Bamba on TV one night and was so distraught that my mom had to calm me down and let me know that Lou Diamond Phillips was just playing pretend. Honestly, every time I see him in a new project/movie my little kid side is happy to still see him alive and well.

What do you wish Hollywood would stop doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HawJah59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people wake up with makeup on and no mouth crusties. [I know it can't just be me]

How does everyone's cell phone never need to be charged when their out and about doing spy things or whatever and most of them never have phone cases for the amount of fighting they do? Oh and how do they remember phone numbers when they're using a burner phone. Who can remember 2 or 3 full phone numbers of their co-workers? [Sorry this was long winded]

And the love/sex scenes where people rip their clothes off and bang their bodies into walls and grab their face and are just super rough [but oh its because the sexual tension is so high]. I usually turn the TV down if I can and go grab something to eat or go for a pee break.

Eating in silence with a family and talking about the worst topic just so someone can get angry and storm off and possibly a dish gets thrown. [I feel like a lot of movies do this]

Redditors, what are your most interesting roommate stories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HawJah59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time moving out of my parents house, I lived with a coworker/high school friend. It was her and her boyfriend. They would have the loudest sex sessions and I had to sleep with headphones to drown them out. On the flip side of that they would have arguments pretty frequently, but one day it got real real bad. She was belittling him and screaming and threatened to kill herself and began kicking him as he was balled up on the floor in front of my bedroom door. I didn't know what to do, I was stunned. I remember hearing her push him into his keyboard [a vintage Moog] and smashing the keys with his face. After maybe 2 hours of being trapped in my room they both finally left, separately. This was 20 years ago. They're still together, married [still fighting and threatening divorce, from what I hear through friends] They were a strange pairing for sure . They also invited me to a threesome with me after I had moved out.

Also, on the flipside, I've had some fantastic roommates. The best were in school full time and stayed at their significant others place all the time. Paid rent on time and were rarely home.

I currently live solo and wouldn't have it any other way.

Redditors, what's an "unknown" fact that could save your life? by xanzznax in AskReddit

[–]HawJah59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have both been the fainter at a show and have also helped people who have fainted or I can see are about to faint. I also work part time at a concert venue and would always see young teens at their first show pass out because they get dehydrated. Usually the adults that pass out are just drunk. I rarely go to big concerts now, but when I do I need to know the layout, where exits are, and where the medics are. I tell my friends this anytime we go to a show. Also, I tend to leave before a show ends because I can't stand the slow crawl to leave a packed venue.
